Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of particle beam needs to be evaluated at particle beam therapy centers before the clinical application of the particle beam. However, since RBE analysis is implemented manually, it is useful to have a tool that can easily and effectively handle the data of experiments to generate cell survival curve and to analyze RBE simultaneously. In this work, the development of a program for RBE analysis of particle beam therapy was presented. This RBE analysis program was developed to include two parts; fitting the cell survival curves to linear-quadratic model and calculating the RBE values at a certain endpoint using fitting results. This program was also developed to simultaneously compare and analyze the template results that stored experiment data with photon and particle beam irradiations. The results of the cell survival curve obtained by each irradiation can be analyzed by the user on a desired data after reading the template stored in the easy-to-use excel file. The analysis results include the cell survival curves with error range, which are appeared in the screen and the ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ parameters of linear-quadratic model with 95% confidence intervals, RBE values, and $R^2$ values to evaluate goodness-of-fit of survival curves to model, which are stored in a text cvs file. This software can generate cell survival curve, fit to model, and calculate RBE all at once with raw experiment data, so it helps users to save time for data handling and to reduce the possibility of making error on analysis. As a coming plan, we will create a user-friendly graphical user interface to present the results more intuitively.
The effects of molecular weight (MW) and concentration on the rheological properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were investigated at $30^{\circ}C$. Ubbelohde viscometer and rotational rheometer were employed for dilute and concentrated regime, respectively. In the dilute regime, the Mark-Houwink exponent ($\alpha$) of the solutions determined from three different MWs proved 0.73. The critical concentration (C*), in which the entanglement and overlap of polymer molecules began to take place, decreased with increasing the MW of PVA. Huggins constant ($K_H$) values ranged from 0.33 to 0.45 over the MW examined. In the log-log plot of $\eta_{sp}$ versus [$\eta$]C, the PVA with higher degree of polymerization (DP) gave a greater slope exhibiting the inflection point in the vicinity of C*. In the dynamic viscosity ($\eta'$) curve, the PVA solutions of DP 1700 presented Newtonian fluid behavior over most of the frequency range examined. However, the lower Newtonian flow region reduced with increasing the DP. As the PVA concentration increased, $\eta'$ was increased and the onset shear rate for pseudoplasticity was decreased. In the Cole-Cole plot, PVA solutions showed almost a single master curve in a slope of ca. 1.65 regardless of the DP. However, the increase of the concentration from 8 to 12 wt% for PVA solutions of DP 5000 decreased the slope from 1.73 to 1.57. In the tan $\delta$ curve, the onset frequency for sol-gel transition was shifted from 154 to 92 rad/s with increasing the DP from 3300 to 5000 and from 192 to 46 rad/s with increasing the concentration from 8 to 12 wt%. In addition, longer relaxation time ($\lambda$) was observed with increasing the DP and concentration.
[$^3$H]Ouabain binding parameters ( $K_{D}$ and $B_{max}$) to control rat ventricular strips and Langendorff preparations which were not previously exposed to ouabain were compared with those to both preparations that had been first exposed to a complete ouabain dose range of dose-response curve (10$^{-8}$ to 10$^{4}$M). In rat ventricular strips and Langendorff perfused heart preparations, cumulative dose-response curves of ouabain revealed biphasic positive inotropic effects, a "low-dose" effect and a "high-dose" effect with E $d_{50}$ values of 0.5 $\mu$M and 35 $\mu$M ouabain, respectively. The "low-dose" effect in ventricular strip disappeared or was diminished significantly when the ouabain dose-response curve was repeated after the washout of the effects of the first dose-response curve, whereas there were no significant differences in the maximal "high-dose"effect in both exposures to oubain. However, both of the control and ouabain-preexposed Langendorff perfused hearts revealed the same low-dose effects. The $K_{D}$ value for [$^3$H] ouabain binding and the ouabain binding site concentration ( $B_{max}$) estimated by [$^3$H]ouabain displacement assay in control preparations were 230 nM and 2 pmol/mg protein, respectively. [$^3$H]Ouabain binding parameters were not changed by repeated exposure to high concentrations of ouabain. These results suggest that digitalis receptor desensitization in the rat ventricular strip may due to the change of post-receptor events induced by ouabain binding to a high affinity site ($\alpha$$_2$isoform).).).).).
The matric suction and volumetric water content of Jumunin standard sand with a relative density of 60% were measured using an Automated Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) apparatus during both drying and wetting processes. The test time for the drying process was longer than that for the wetting process, because the flow of water is likely to be protected by air trapped in voids within the soils during the drying process. Based on the matric suction and volumetric water content, the SWCC was estimated using the model proposed by van Genuchten (1980). For the drying process, the unsaturated fitting parameters ${\alpha}$, n, and m were 0.399, 8.586, and 0.884, respectively; for the wetting process, the values were 0.548, 5.625, and 8.220, respectively. The hysteresis phenomenon occurred in the SWCCs, which means the SWCC of the drying process is not matched with the SWCC of the wetting process. Using these unsaturated parameters, we estimated the Suction Stress Characteristic Curve (SSCC), based on the relationship between suction stress and the effective degree of saturation. The suction stress showed a rapid decrease when the matric suction exceeds the Air Entry Value (AEV). Therefore, the effective stress of unsaturated soils is different from that of saturated soils when the matric suction exceeds the AEV. The suction stress of the drying process exceeds that of the wetting process for a given effective degree of saturation. The hysteresis phenomenon was also recognized in SSCCs. The hysteresis phenomenon of SSCCs arises from that of SWCCs, which is induced by the ink bottle effect and the contact angle effect. In the case of a sandy slope, the suction stress is positive and acts to enhance the slope stability as the water infiltrates the ground, but is negative when the suction stress exceeds the AEV. The results obtained for the wetting process should be applied in analyses of slope stability, because the process of water infiltration into ground is similar to the wetting process.
Both manufacturing parameters and particles' chemical composition controll coercivity and its distribution of magnetic particles. The coercivity and its distribution are important properties for high density magnetic recording, so these are used as tool for evaluation of reproducibility of magnetic particles. We report in this paper the applications of dM/dH versus H curve, which is derived from magnetic hysteresis loop, to the evaluation of coercivity distribution of magnetic particles and oxidation studies of recording metal particles. The coercivity distri-bution can be estimated from the full width half rnaximun (FWHM) and the peak shape of the dM/dH versus H curve. The peak shape of the curve depends upon distribution of particles' coercivity. The peak of dM/dH versus H curve becomes broad and lor is splitted into two or rmre peaks. It depends on uniformity of particles' coercivity. When the coercivity difference between Ba-Ferrite and ${\gamma}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ is larger than 600 Oe, the peak becomes broad and is consequently splitted into two peaks. Ununiformly substituted Ba-Ferrite particles show broad peak. It is apparent that the analysis of the curve is one of sensitive measuring techniques for determination of coercivity distri-bution and studies on magnetic properties of substituted Ba-Ferrite and oxidation of magnetic recording metal particles.
(1) The flow data of f (stress) and ${\dot{s}$ (strain rate) for Fe and Ti alloys were plotted in the form of f vs. -ln ${\dot{s}$ by using the literature values. (2) The plot showed two distinct patterns A and B; Pattern A is a straight line with a negative slope, and Pattern B is a curve of concave upward. (3) According to Kim and Ree's generalized theory of plastic deformation, pattern A & B belong to Case 1 and 2, respectively; in Case 1, only one kind of flow units acts in the deformation, and in Case 2, two kinds flow units act, and stress is expressed by $f={X_1f_1}+{X_2f_2}$where $f_1\;and\;f_2$ are the stresses acting on the flow units of kind 1 and 2, respectively, and $X_1,\;X_2$ are the fractions of the surface area occupied by the two kinds of flow units; $f_j=(1/{\alpha}_j) sinh^{-1}\;{\beta}_j{{\dot{s}}\;(j=1\;or\;2)$, where $1/{\alpha}_j\;and\;{\beta}_j$ are proportional to the shear modulus and relaxation time, respectively. (4) We found that grain-boundary flow units only act in the deformation of Fe and Ti alloys whereas dislocation flow units do not show any appreciable contribution. (5) The deformations of Fe and Ti alloys belong generally to pattern A (Case 1) and B (Case 2), respectively. (6) By applying the equations, f=$(1/{\alpha}_{g1}) sinh^-1({\beta}_{g1}{\dot{s}}$) and $f=(X_{g1}/{\alpha}_{g1})sinh^{-1}({\beta}_{g1}{\dot{s}})+ (X_{g2}/{\alpha}_{g2})\;shih^{-1}({\beta}_{g2}{\dot{s}})$ to the flow data of Fe and Ti alloys, the parametric values of $x_{gj}/{\alpha}_{gj}\;and\;{\beta}_{gs}(j=1\;or\;2)$ were determined, here the subscript g signifies a grain-boundary flow unit. (7) From the values of ($({\beta}_gj)^{-1}$) at different temperatures, the activation enthalpy ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ of deformation due to flow unit gj was determined, ($({\beta}_gj)^{-1}$) being proportional to , the jumping frequency (the rate constant) of flow unit gj. The ${\Delta}H_{gj}\;^{\neq}$ agreed very well with ${\Delta}H_{gj}\;^{\neq}$ (self-diff) of the element j whose diffusion in the sample is a critical step for the deformation as proposed by Kim-Ree's theory (Refer to Tables 3 and 4). (8) The fact, ${\Delta}H_{gj}\;^{\neq}={\Delta}H_{j}\;^{\neq}$ (self-diff), justifies the Kim-Ree theory and their method for determining activation enthalpies for deformation. (9) A linear relation between ${\beta}^{-1}$ and carbon content [C] in hot-rolled steel was observed, i.e., In ${\beta}^{-1}$ = -50.2 [C] - 40.3. This equation explains very well the experimental facts observed with regard to the deformation of hot-rolled steel..
Hypoglycemic effect of onion skin extract in vitro and in vivo was investigated. A methanol extract of onion skin inhibited yeast $\alpha$-glucosidase with an $IC_{50}$ of 0.159 mg/mL. A single oral administration of the onion skin extract (500 mg/kg) significantly lowered the postprandial area under the glucose response curve to starch (1 g/kg, p<0.05). Three-week-old db/db mice were fed an AIN-93G diet or a diet supplemented with a 0.5% onion skin extract for 7 weeks after a 1-week adaptation period. Consumption of onion skin extract significantly reduced the levels of plasma glucose, insulin, and blood glycated hemoglobin as compared with the control group (p<0.05). These findings suggest that onion skin is effective in controlling hyperglycemia in animal models of type 2 diabetes mellitus, at least in part by inhibiting $\alpha$-glucosidase activity.
This paper studies item-life test plans with the specified item mean life $T_1$ (MTBF) - Producer's risk ${\alpha}$ and item mean life $T_2$ (MTBF, $T_2$ < $T_1$) - Consumer's risk ${\beta}$ when the probability of item survival follows the Weibull distribution (known shape parameter) as a expansion of [1]. And Operating Characteristic Curves and Average Life-testing Times of item-life test plans are computed for this paper and [1]. Cost analysis procedures are same as [1]. These results are computed by using computer program written in Level II Basic for Apple II Plus Micro-computer. Both this paper and [6] reduce the life-testing time for Weibull distribution in comparision with Exponential distribution, but results of [6] were computed for different criterions from this paper.
To determine the concentration of Lactoperoxidase (LPO), an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay(ELISA) was developed. Anti-LPO egg yolk immunoglobulin(IgY) was transferred to egg yolk by immunizing of Brown hens with LPO. The titer of purified anti-LPO IgY was 1: 520,000. The immunological response of anti- LPO IgY with ${\alpha}$-lactalbumin, ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin, casein and lysozyme were evaluated, resulting that the anti-LPO IgY found to be a specific antibody toward LPO and no cross-reaction was observed against ${\alpha}$-lactalbumin, ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin, casein, and lysozyme in double immunodiffusion test and ELISA test. In indirect ELISA method, coating concentration of LPO and dilution rate of anti-LPO IgY was 0.25$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL and 1:8,000 respectively. Sensitivity in the standard curve of LPO was ranged from 0.01 to 1$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL using anti-LPO IgY.
Various thermoluminescent properties of Korean natural quartz for possible use in ${\gamma}$-ray dosimetry has been studied. If the heating is exactly linear, ${\gamma}$-irradiated radiation sensitive (type 1) $\alpha$-quartz can yield a glow curve of single peak, hence glow peak height could be taken as a ${\gamma}$-dose for its dosimetry. Quartz crystal dosimeter exhibited the linearity of thermoluminescent intensity in the range from about 2$\times$10$^{3}$R to 2$\times$10$^{6}$ R, and also had an advantage of low fading because of the high peak temperature (300$\pm$4$0^{\circ}C$). The pulverized quartz sample having the grain size of 0.3<ø<0.9mm showed the linearity of T. L. intensity in the range from 50R to 2$\times$10$^3$R. Therapeutic application of the pulverized sample on the correct measurement of the absorbed dose in a body region of a cancer patient seems to be successful.
