  • Corrosion inside electronic packages significantly impacts the system performance and reliability, necessitating non-destructive diagnostic techniques for system health management. This study aims to present a non-destructive method for assessing corrosion in copper interconnects using the Smith chart, a tool that integrates the magnitude and phase of complex impedance for visualization. For the experiment, specimens simulating copper transmission lines were subjected to temperature and humidity cycles according to the MIL-STD-810G standard to induce corrosion. The corrosion level of the specimen was quantitatively assessed and labeled based on color changes in the R channel. S-parameters and Smith charts with progressing corrosion stages showed unique patterns corresponding to five levels of corrosion, confirming the effectiveness of the Smith chart as a tool for corrosion assessment. Furthermore, by employing data augmentation, 4,444 Smith charts representing various corrosion levels were obtained, and artificial intelligence models were trained to output the corrosion stages of copper interconnects based on the input Smith charts. Among image classification-specialized CNN and Transformer models, the ConvNeXt model achieved the highest diagnostic performance with an accuracy of 89.4%. When diagnosing the corrosion using the Smith chart, it is possible to perform a non-destructive evaluation using electronic signals. Additionally, by integrating and visualizing signal magnitude and phase information, it is expected to perform an intuitive and noise-robust diagnosis.

  • This study aims to identify the factors that affect customer satisfaction as the market growth of rental subscription services for living environment home appliances increases. Unlike previous research, which focused on online subscriptions (e.g., digital content, over-the-top (OTT) services, e-books, and mobile devices), this study expands the scope to include rental subscriptions for household environmental appliances. Specifically, this study analyzes the factors influencing customer satisfaction among rental subscription service users by examining the effects of perceived usefulness, reliability, and convenience. The results show that users' perceived reliability and convenience of rental subscription services for living environment home appliances significantly affect customer satisfaction. Perceived usefulness, however, was not found to have a significant impact, as it is an abstract and subjective customer aspect. The implications of the results are as follows: First, standardized services must be strengthened to increase the reliability of rental subscription services. Additionally, it is necessary to improve convenience by developing additional services when managing regular visits tailored to the characteristics of each product. Providing customized services by integrating products and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). Furthermore, effective customer management to increase customer satisfaction is crucial, as it can lead to cross-selling and up-selling opportunities. Lastly, venture start-ups should actively apply a subscription service business model.

  • This study aims to investigate the impact of mathematical journal writing activities on sixth-grade students' mathematics anxiety and the 'writing' aspect of mathematical communication. For this purpose, 27 sixth-grade students participated in 14 sessions of mathematical journal writing activities while learning division with fractions and decimals. Mathematics anxiety was measured using a questionnaire, with pre- and post-test results statistically analyzed. Mathematical communication in the 'writing' domain was quantitatively measured using an analytical framework to track changes in levels. Additionally, 13 students were interviewed to examine the impact of journal writing on mathematics anxiety and mathematical communication in more detail. The study found that among the four main factors of mathematics anxiety, there was a significant reduction in the subject-specific and environmental factors. The average levels of 'expression' and 'explanation' in the 'writing' domain of mathematical communication gradually increased, with specific teacher feedback supporting improvements in students' communication levels. Based on these findings, the study suggests implications for the use and guidance of mathematical journal writing activities in school settings.

  • Sounding rockets are cost-effective and rapidly deployable tools for directly exploring the ionosphere and microgravity environments. These rockets achieve their target altitudes quickly and are equipped with various scientific instruments to collect real-time data. Perigee Aerospace plans its inaugural test launch in the first half of 2024, followed by a second performance test launch in January 2025. The second launch, scheduled off the coast of Jeju Island, aims to reach an altitude of approximately 150 km with a payload of 30 kg, conducting various experiments in the suborbital region. Particularly in mid-latitude regions, the ionosphere sporadically exhibits increased electron densities in the sporadic E layers and magnetic fluctuations caused by the equatorial electrojet. To measure these phenomena, the sounding rocket version of ionospheric anomaly monitoring by magnetometer and plasma-probe (IAMMAP), currently under development at the KAIST Satellite Research Center, will be onboard. This study focuses on enhancing our understanding of the mid-latitude ionosphere and designing observable missions for the forthcoming performance tests.

  • This study aims to assess the direct and indirect impacts of local fiscal expenditures on water quality. Panel data spanning from 2010 to 2018 for 173 cities and districts in Korea are assembled, and a two-stage dynamic panel model is utilized for our estimation. The empirical findings reveal several key insights. Firstly, local fiscal expenditures on water quality are effective in ameliorating both Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Phosphorus (T-P). Notably, the direct impact on T-P surpasses that on BOD in the short and long run. Secondly, expenditures dedicated to water quality improvement demonstrate a positive effect on local economic growth, and an inverted U-shaped relationship is observed between BOD and local economic growth. Due to the positive linkage, the indirect effect on BOD suggests, on average, a deterioration in water quality during local economic growth. Thirdly, concerning BOD, the direct effect of government expenditure on water quality improvement outweighs the indirect effect, but in the case of T-P, the indirect effect is not significant, and the total effect is solely determined by the direct impact. Despite local fiscal expenditures potentially exacerbating water quality through regional economic growth, the study finds that the direct enhancement of water quality remains a more substantial factor in the short and long run.

  • Purpose: Textbook outcome is a comprehensive measure used to assess surgical quality and is increasingly being recognized as a valuable evaluation tool. Delta-shaped anastomosis (DA), an intracorporeal gastroduodenostomy, is a viable option for minimally invasive distal gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer. This study aims to evaluate the surgical outcomes and calculate the textbook outcome of DA. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, the records of 4,902 patients who underwent minimally invasive distal gastrectomy for DA between 2009 and 2020 were reviewed. The data were categorized into three phases to analyze the trends over time. Surgical outcomes, including the operation time, length of post-operative hospital stay, and complication rates, were assessed, and the textbook outcome was calculated. Results: Among 4,505 patients, the textbook outcome is achieved in 3,736 (82.9%). Post-operative complications affect the textbook outcome the most significantly (91.9%). The highest textbook outcome is achieved in phase 2 (85.0%), which surpasses the rates of in phase 1 (81.7%) and phase 3 (82.3%). The post-operative complication rate within 30 d after surgery is 8.7%, and the rate of major complications exceeding the Clavien-Dindo classification grade 3 is 2.4%. Conclusions: Based on the outcomes of a large dataset, DA can be considered safe and feasible for gastric cancer.

  • The height of large car and truck carriers from the keel to the wheel house is 44 ~ 46 m, and as the car-carriers increases in size, it exhibits the 'top heavy' characteristic, where the upper section is heavier than the lower section. This study aims to estimate the maximum outward heel angle of the Golden Ray car-carrier (G-ship) during turning maneuvers for accident investigation and the prevention of similar accidents. The theoretically calculated maximum outward heel is 7.5° (at 19 kn, rudder angle 35°) with a GM of +3.0 m or higher, and 16.7° with a GM of +1.85 m. Meanwhile the experimentally modified maximum outward heel is 10.5° (at 19 kn, rudder angle 35°) with a GM of +3.0 m or higher, and 23.3° with a GM of +1.85 m. The G-ship is maneuvered during an accident at a speed of 13 kn, at starboard rudder angle of 10° to 20°, it changes course from 038°(T) to 105°(T) based on the instructions of the on-board pilot. At this time, the maximum outward heel is estimated to be between 7.8° and 10.9° at the port side, which is 2.2 times higher than the normal outward heel. In the IS code, cargo ships are required to exhibit a minimum GoM of +0.15 m or more. The maneuvered G-ship exhibits a GoM of +1.72 m. It is not maneuvered because it fails to satisfy the international GoM criteria and because its GoM is insufficient to counteract the heeling moment during the maneuver. This study is performed based on accident-investigation results from the Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal and the USCG.

  • Assessing the stability of small fishing vessels is important to prevent capsize accidents in coastal waters that primarily occur on small fishing vessels. However, the regulations regarding stability assessment for small vessels under 24 m are inadequate according to the domestic Fisheries Act. Based on safety standards issued by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 2022 to enhance safety and welfare, vessels adhering to the enhanced safety standards for standard ship types are required to establish stability regardless of their length. This study aims to utilize these aforementioned standards to assess the stability of vessels under 24 m, investigating the suitability of applying these criteria to these vessels and examining the impact on various small vessels with different superstructures. Initially, a 4.99-ton fishing vessel designed according to the standard ship type was selected as the subject vessel. Compliance with the standards was evaluated based on the initial stability of the vessel using the transverse metacentric height (GM) and transverse restoring moment arm at the limit angle (GZα). Additionally, six types of small vessels with identical hull forms and specifications to the subject vessel were further examined using prevalent superstructure designs in small fishing vessels. The stability of the subject small vessel was also assessed. A study of a 4.99-ton standard fishing vessel confirmed that the safety standards for standard fishing vessels with enhanced safety welfare were applicable to small fishing vessels under 4.99-ton class and that the stability of small fishing vessels with superstructure modifications was not significantly changed.

  • Backgrounds/Aims: Parenchymal-sparing anatomical hepatectomy (Ps-AH) based on portal ramification of the right anterior section (RAS) is a new technique to avoid unnecessarily transecting too much liver parenchyma, especially in cases of major anatomical hepatectomy. Methods: We prospectively assessed 26 patients with primary hepatic malignancies having undergone major Ps-AH based on portal ramification of the RAS from August 2018 to August 2022 (48 months). The perioperative indications, clinical data, intra-operative index, pathological postoperative specimens, postoperative complications, and follow-up results were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Among the 26 patients analyzed, there was just one case that had intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma The preoperative level of α-Fetoprotein was 25.2 ng/mL. All cases (100%) had Child-Pugh A liver function preoperatively. The ventral/dorsal RAS was preserved in 19 and 7 patients, respectively. The mean surgical margin was 6.2 mm. The mean surgical time was 228.5 minutes, while the mean blood loss was 255 mL. In pathology, 5 cases (19.2%) had microvascular invasion, and in the group of HCC patients, 92% of all cases had moderate or poor tumor differentiation. Six cases (23.1%) of postoperative complications were graded over III according to the Clavien-Dindo system, including in three patients resistant ascites or intra-abdominal abscess that required intervention. Conclusions: Parenchymal-sparing anatomical hepatectomy based on portal ramification of the RAS to achieve R0-resection was safe and effective, with favorable short-term outcomes. This technique can be used widely in clinical practice.
