  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify latent classes of health-related quality of life trajectories in middle-aged women and investigate predictors for latent classes. Methods: This study utilized data from the 2nd, the 4th to the 7th Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women & Families. The subjects included 1,351 women aged 40~45 years. The data was analyzed using latent class growth analysis and logistic regression. Results: Two trajectories were identified for health-related quality of life in middle-aged women; 'persistently good' and 'increasing' groups. Predictors for the 'increasing' group were lower economic status, higher depression, and lower perceived health status. Conclusion: This study showed that characteristics of the individual, symptom status, and health perceptions were associated with health-related quality of life in middle-aged women. It is necessary to provide effective intervention for latent classes of health-related quality of life trajectories based on physical, mental, and social factors.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the relationships among perceived life stress, self-esteem, and depression in middle-aged women. Methods: Data were collected from March 30 to May 25, 2000. The study subjects were 123 middle-aged women living in Pusan. The instruments used for this study were the Perceived Life Stress scale developed by Lee (1984), based on the original scale designed by Yu, et al. (1994), Self-esteem scale developed by Rho, et al. (1997), and the Depression scale developed by Ahn (1988). For data analysis, the SPSS PC+ was utilized, by which frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Sheffe's test and Pearson's correlation coefficients were examined. The reliability of the instruments were tested by Cronbach's $\alpha$, showing the internal consistency of 0.7328 for the self-esteem scale. and 0.8987 for the depression scale. Results: 1) The results showed a relatively low perceived life stress score in the middle-aged women with a mean and standard deviation of 363.18 and 72.92 (range: .00 - 1877.38). 2) The results showed a relatively high self-esteem score in the middle-aged women with a mean and standard deviation of 29.77 and 5.06 (range: 10 - 40). 3) The results showed a relatively high depression score in the middle-aged women with a mean and standard deviation of 39.46 and 9.38 (range: 0 - 61). 4) There were no statistically significant differences in perceived life stress by demographic related factors. 5) There were statistically significant differences in self-esteem by health status (F=8.930, p= .000) and economic status (t=4.792, p= .010). 6) There were statistically significant differences in depression by age (F=3.770, p= .0261). education (F=4.850, p= .003) and regularity of menstrual cycle (F=13.180, p= .000). 7) There was no statistically significant correlation between perceived life stress, and self-esteem in the middle-aged women (r=-.077, p= .399). 8) There was no significant correlation between perceived life stress. and depression in the middle-aged women (r= .010, p= .916). 9) There was a significant negative correlation between self-esteem, and depression in the middle-aged women (r=- .359, p= .000). Conclusion: Higher self-esteem was related to a lower depression status. Therefore, it is necessary to elevate the level of self-esteem in order to reduce the level of depression in middle-aged Korean women.

  • The effects of dry-aging on changes in taste compounds and electronic taste sensing traits of pork were investigated. Ten pork belly and shoulder blade cuts were divided into wet-aging and dry-aging treatments and stored for 21 days at $2^{\circ}C$. The contents of nucleotides and free amino acids, and electronic tongue analysis were investigated at different aging periods (1, 7, 14, and 21 days). The contents of inosine and hypoxanthine of dry-aged pork cuts increased more rapidly, and they were significantly (p<0.05) higher than wet-aged pork cuts. Total free amino acids of dry-aged pork cuts were also significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of wet-aged pork cuts after 21 days of aging. Consequently, umami intensity of dry-aged pork cuts increased more rapidly and the values were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of wet-aged pork during 21 days of aging. Results suggested that the better palatability of dry-aged pork cuts might be due to higher umami intensity in relation to higher contents of inosine, hypoxanthine, and free amino acids.

This study was based on the survey data from the 90 aged, who are over sity years old and resident in Seoul. In order to measure the general characteristics and subjective audition, Cantril's Ladder Scale Tool was used. For the loneliness, UCLA Loneliness Scale Tool (translated into Korean to suit the Korean environment by Kim's). In order to measure the self-esteem, Rosenberg's Self-esteem Measurement Tool (translated into Korean by Chun) was used. No's Quality of Life Measurement Tool was used to the measure the quality of life. The Data were collected by direct interviewing on the subjects for this study from August 10, 1999 to September 15, 1999. In accordance with each purpose of this study, appropriate analyzing methods such as Descriptive Statistics, T-test, and ANOVA were used in analyzing the collected data. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to test the relationship of the loneliness, self-esteem and quality of life on the hearing disturbance aged. The result of this study is as follows: 1) The average of the degrees of subjective audition was 7.22, The factors that cause the result were sex, religion, the perception of health, the married state. 2) The average of the degrees of loneliness was 55.18, The factor that cause the result was the perception of health. 3) The average of the degrees of self-esteem was 28.42, The factors that cause the result were the number of family, the number of children, the perception of health. 4) The average of the degrees of quality of life was 71.87 the factors that cause the result were age, education, the number of children, the perception of health. 5) Correlation of Loneliness, self-esteem and quality of life is the perception of loneliness showed significant negative correlation with self-esteem (r=-.466, p=.0001) and quality of life (r=-.450, p=.0001). As a result of analysis above: Because of the recognition change of the aged, it seems to them that the subjective audition scale on the hearing disturbance aged is measured by only 10-point ladder scale is inappropriate. Therefore, it is necessary that the physiologic-index can confirm more exactly should be applied to them. It is very important that the social-psychological factor that has influence on the aged should be the self-perception of health. Thus, proper development of nursing intervention should be required to process in the self-perception of health on the aged.
