In this presentation, a leaching experiment which is followed the pH changes(pH=4, pH=7) and the mixing rates(1%, 3%, 5%, 7%) was carried out to examine the arsenic reduction effects and the leaching characteristics on arsenic contaminated soil after stabilization treatment in which 5 materials were used as stabilization agencies, i.e. ZVI(zero valent iron), blast furnace slag, steel refining slag, quick lime, and oyster shell meal. Except for blast furnace slag, the arsenic removal rate increased as the mixing rate increases of stabilization agencies. Arsenic leaching concentration was indicated that pH=7 condition is higher than pH=4 condition. This result shows because arsenic immobilization reaction increases as pH decreases, and arsenic adsorption takes place as pH decreases.
This paper investigates the stabilization feasibility of contaminated sediment contaminated with benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) using acid/base-modified activated carbon. The efficiency of stabilizers was evaluated by analyzing the impact of the activated carbon on the decomposition and adsorption of the contaminant, along with the biological effects on earthworms. Additionally, the contaminant migration was monitored with the BBP concentration in pore water using low-density polyethylene. The research results indicated that the accumulated concentration of BBP was approximately 2% lower in the experimental group applying a 5% mixture ratio of modified activated carbon compared to the group applying a 10% mixture ratio. The leaching into water was reduced by over 18% in all experimental conditions after 7-day exposure period. Over 25% reduction was observed after 28-day exposure. The pore water concentrations were measured. After 7 days of exposure, the mechanically mixed experimental group exhibited a higher pore water stabilization rate compared to the biologically mixed group. Within the mechanically mixed group, the experimental group with 10% mixture of modified activated carbon showed a 1% higher stabilization rate than the group with 5% mixture. After 28 days of exposure, the biologically mixed experimental group demonstrated a higher pore water stabilization rate compared to the mechanically mixed group. Moreover, within the biologically mixed group, the experimental group with 10% mixture of modified activated carbon showed approximately 0.1% higher stabilization rate than the group with 5% mixture.
Nickel Chloride coated protein chip plates were developed by using a spin coating method after $H_2$ plasma treatment. The adsorption ability of histidine tagged protein was investigated at various times of plasma treatment. The properties of the nickel chloride and protein on the surface of the slides were assayed using particle size analysis and the extent of the protein adsorption was determined by using a bio imaging analyzer system. The results show that the ability of protein adsorption decreased as increasing the time of $H_2$ plasma treatment. The mechanism on the ability of protein adsorption at the plate surface is discussed on results and discussions. The results also suggest that the surface stabilization of protein chip plates treated by plasma technology may be applicable in biosensor markets.

This study assessed the feasibility of coal mine drainage sludge (CMDS) as a stabilizing agent for mercury contaminated soil through pot experiments and batch tests. In the pot experiments with 43 days of lettuce growth, the bioavailability of mercury in the amended soil and mercury content of the lettuce were decreased by 46% and 50%, respectively. These results were similar to those of the soil amended with the sulfide compound (FeS) generally used for mercury stabilization. Thus, CMDS could be an attractive mercury stabilizer in terms of industrial by-product recycling. Batch tests were conducted to examine mercury fractionation including reactions between the soil and acetic acid. The result showed that some elemental fraction changed to strongly bounded fraction rather than residual (HgS) fraction. This made it possible to conclude that mercury adsorption on oxides in CMDS was the major mechanism of stabilization.
In most of studies on solidification/stabilization with waste, small columns have been used to examinate adsorption or leachate. However, these experiments using small apparatus have been limited to apply with the field. In this study, considering an application to the field, a large Lysimeter(100cm$\times$100cm$\times$100cm) used for the simulation. Then, the open dumping waste was mixed directly with bentonite to simulate the stabilization of waste, environmental aspects and several basic tests. As a result, the concentration of heavy metals and contaminated substances changed with bentonite rate. Most of contaminated substances were decreased in leaching with increased mixing rate of bentonite. Especially, the concentration of CODcr removed 25~30%. Also, the residual soil in dumping waste produced approximately 80% of total volume by 40$\times$40mm screen.
Cation exchange capacity of clay, white clay and zeolite was measured by the adsorption test for 3 different heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Zn) standard solutions whose concentrations were varied by 10, 20, 30 ppm and pH were varied by 3, 5, 7, 9, respectively. The adsorption rate of Cd and Zn increased with increasing pH and slowly increased with increasing pH above pH 5. However, adsorption rate of Cr did not increase with increasing pH. Especially, Cr adsorption rate of the mixture of clay and white clay at pH 5 showed an half decrease compared to that at pH 3. The adsorption rate of mixed heavy metal solutions was in the order of Cd, Zn > Cr; however, the order was changed by Fe>Pb, Cu>Cr>Zn>Cd in case of Cu, Fe and Pb addition.

Study was peformed to develop the‘environmental double pile’for the remediation of low-permeable contaminated soil. This technique is similar in function to‘sand drain pile’But this applies recyclable oyster shell treated as waste materials to a drain material and the pile is consisted of two layers. Inner metal pile is located in center and oyster shells are filled around it. By this technology, contaminated ground water is pumped out through the oyster shell and purified by drainage, adsorption, and reaction processes. Afterwards, the grout material is injected through the inner pile for the effect of the solidification / stabilization. As a result, the concept of this technique is a development of one-step process technology. Through the test, a consolidation characteristic by radial drain is going to be evaluated and the optimum standard of this technology will be calculated.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies using many amendments for heavy metal stabilization in soil were conducted in order to find out new materials. But, the studies accounting for the use of appropriate amendments considering soil pH remain incomplete. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of initial soil pH on the efficiency of various amendments. METHODS AND RESULTS: Acid soil and alkali soil contaminated with heavy metals were collected from the agricultural soils affected by the abandoned mine sites nearby. Three different types of amendments were selected with hypothesis being different in stabilization mechanisms; organic matter, lime stone and iron, and added with different combination. For determining the changes in the extractable heavy metals, water soluble, Mehlich-3, Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, Simple Bioavailability Extraction Test method were applied as chemical assessments for metal stabilization. For biological assessments, soil respiration and root elongation of bok choy (Brassica campestris ssp. Chinensis Jusl.) were determined. CONCLUSION: It was revealed that lime stone reduced heavy metal mobility in acid soil by increasing soil pH and iron was good at stabilizing heavy metals by supplying adsorption sites in alkali soil. Organic matter was a good source in terms of supplying nutrients, but it was concerning when accounting for increasing metal availability.
Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared from cost effective commercial textiles through stabilization, carbonization, and subsequently activation by carbon dioxide. ACFs were characterized for surface area and pore size distribution by physical adsorption of nitrogen at 77 K. ACFs were also examined for various surface characteristics by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and CHNO elemental analyzer. The prepared ACFs exhibited good surface textural properties with well developed micro porous structure. With improvement in physical strength, the commercial textile grade acrylic precursor based ACFs developed in this study may have great utility as cost effective adsorbents in environmental remediation applications.

Plastics and vinyl resin is generally used in the various fields of industry and daily life. Except incineration, most waste has been disposed finally in landfill and the leaching of plasticizer as DEHP(di 2-ethylhexyl phthalaet) has been taken place in the landfill. DEHP had been found. for endocrine disrupter by World Wild Life Fund and Japan. In this study aimed at estimation of capacity of adsorption and measurement of phthalate ester in the residual soil. The residual soil had been gathered from three closed landfill which was under stabilization with sorting and transferring. The Dibutyl phthalate and DEHP had been contained in all residual soil. Especially, resisual soil contained DEHP much more than peripheral soil. In J landfill residual soil, organic matter content, CEC and #200 sieve passing ratio is highest, and Freundlich isotherm sorption coefficient(K) and constant(1/n) is highest.
