  • This research was performed to evaluate the efficacy of phosphate removal from wastewater by surface-modified wood powder and to clarify the removal mechanisms. In this work, Pinus rigida which is abundant in Korea and has little economic value was used in preparation of the wood powder as a sorbent material. The experiments were carried out in 2 phases, isothermal adsorption test and column test. The results of adsorption test fitted well both the Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal equations. Adsorption capacity was highest with the bark powder followed by the mixed powder(50% bark powder and 50% woody powder) and woody powder. Phosphate removal efficiency was as high as 98% at initial phosphate concentration of 50mg/L. Specific surface area of the powder increased following the experiment and phosphate removal was speculated to occur through adsorption mechanism. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDXA) revealed that the phosphate adsorbed onto the surface of the powder was in the form of strengite($FePO_{4}$).

  • This study explored the feasibility of calcium-rich food waste, Mactra veneriformis shells (MVS), as an adsorbent for phosphate removal, and its removal efficiency was enhanced by the thermal activation process. The CaCO3 in MVS was converted to CaO by thermal activation (>800 ℃), which is more favorable for adsorbing phosphate. Thermal activation did not noticeably influence the specific surface area of MVS. The MVS thermally activated at 800 ℃ (MVS-800), showed the highest phosphate adsorption capacity, was used for further adsorption experiments, including kinetics, equilibrium isotherms, and thermodynamic adsorption. The effects of environmental factors, including pH, competing anions, and adsorbent dosage, were also studied. Phosphate adsorption by MVS-800 reached equilibrium within 48h, and the kinetic adsorption data were well explained by the pseudo-first-order model. The Langmuir model was a better fit for phosphate adsorption by MVS-800 than the Freundlich model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of MVS-800 obtained via the Langmuir model was 188.86 mg/g. Phosphate adsorption is an endothermic and involuntary process. As the pH increased, the phosphate adsorption decreased, and a sharp decrease was observed between pH 7 and 9. The presence of anions had a negative impact on phosphate removal, and their impact followed the decreasing order CO32- > SO42- > NO3- > Cl-. The increase in adsorbent dosage increased phosphate removal percentage, and 6.67 g/L of MVS-800 dose achieved 99.9% of phosphate removal. It can be concluded that the thermally treated MVS-800 can be used as an effective adsorbent for removing phosphate.

  • Removal through adsorption is the most widely used and effective treatment method for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaust gases. However, at high temperatures and humidity, adsorption is competitive due to the presence of moisture and unsmooth physical adsorption thereby deteriorating adsorption performance. Therefore, water adsorption honeycomb (WAH) and VOCs adsorption honeycomb (VAH) were prepared to improve VOCs adsorption at high temperatures and humidity. Adsorbed toluene amounts on single honeycomb (SH), containing only VAH, and combined honeycomb (CH), containing WAH and VAH, were determined. Further, the toluene adsorption rates of honeycomb adsorbents mounted on rotary systems, VAH-single rotor (SR) and WAH/VAH-dual rotor (DR) were determined. Toluene adsorption by WAH/VAH-CH (inlet temperature: 40-50℃; absolute humidity: 28-83 gH2O/kg-dry air) was 1.6 times that by VAH-SH, and the water adsorption efficiency of WAH/VAH-CH was 1.7 times that of VAH-SH. The adsorption/removal efficiency of the WAH/VAH-DR (inlet temperature: 45℃; absolute humidity: 37.5 gH2O/kg-dry air) was 3% higher than that of VAH-SR. This indicates that the WAH at the rotor inlet selectively removed water, thereby improving the adsorption efficiency of the VAH at the outlet.

  • New technologies or improvement of the existing technologies are required to enhance the efficiency of removal of pollutants from wastewater. In this study we attempted to produce and test the activated carbon produced from the refused tea waste for the removal of dyes from wastewater. The objectives of this investigation were to produce activated carbon from refused tea waste by chemical activation, evaluate its performance for the removal of color produced from Acid Yellow 36, and the modeling of its dye removal with the kinetic study. The activation was performed in two steps namely carbonization at $375{\pm}25^{\circ}C$ and chemical activation with HCl at $800^{\circ}C$ under the absence of Oxygen. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies were performed with a textile dye, Acid Yellow 36, at different concentrations (20-80 mg/L). The maximum dye removal (~90%) observed at 80 mg/L dye concentration and it reduced at low dye concentrations. Maximum adsorption (71.97 mg/g) was recorded at 96 h at $29{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Low pH increased the dye adsorption (pH=2; 78.27 mg/g) while adsorption reduced at high pH levels indicating that the competition occurs in between OH- ions and AY36 molecules for the adsorption sites in RTAC. The Langmuir isotherm model clearly explained the dye adsorption, favorably, by RTAC. Moreover, kinetic studied performed showed that the pseudo second order kinetic model clearly describes the dye adsorption. Based on the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that RTAC can be used for the removal of textile dyes.

  • The removal efficiency of cadmium by chitosan complex isolated from Aspersillus oryzae was investigated through laboratory experiments. The results of the study are as follows. The adsorption kinetics of cadmium was reached the adsorption equilibrium in approximately 20 minutes and the removal efficiency was showed 95.8%. The effect of temperature on cadmium adsorption by chitosan complex shows that as the temperature increased, the amount of cadmium adsorption per unit weight of chitosan complex increased. The correlation between amount of cadmium adsorption per unit weight of chitosan complex and temperature was obtained through the coefficient of determination($R^2$). $R^2$ values was 0.854(p<0.05). A linearized Freundlich equation was used to fit the acquired experimental data. As a result, Freundlich constant, the adsorption intensity(1/n) was 0.550, and the measure of adsorption(k) was 2.181. So, it was concluded that adsorption of cadmium by chitosan complex is effective.

  • Chitosan is a natural polyelectrolytic compound. Researches of adsorption capacity using chitosan have been doing actively. We prepared bead type gel, simple modifier of chitosan, And then experimented adsorption test of heavy metals (Cd etc) using it. According to the result adsorption capacity of chitosan bead was five times higher than chitosan powder. Removal rate of cadmium resulted 90% over in the test that initial concentration of Cd was 100mg/L and bead dosage was 6g/100mL. Adsorption type of heavy metals was similar to general adsorption curve. And optical pH range was 4 - 10 in the adsorption test. In the experiments of other heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Mn) adsorption types had two stages, highly removal rate-stage at the short time (20minutes) and then slow rate-stage at the after. And removal efficiency at the variable pH ranges revealed relatively good.

  • The main objective of this study is to evaluate adsorptive removal of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution using pumice powder. The effects of pH, adsorption time, agitation speed, adsorbent dose, and dye concentrations on dye adsorption were investigated. Process kinetics and isotherm model constants were determined accordingly. The results showed that adsorbent dose, dye concentration and agitation speed are the important parameters on dye adsorption and the removal of MB did not significantly change by varying pH. A total adsorption process time of 60 min was observed to be sufficient to effectively remove 50 mg/L MB concentration. The MB adsorption data obeyed both pseudo first order and second order kinetic models. Adsorption of MB by pumice fitted well both Langmiur and Freundlich isotherms ($R^2{\geq}0.9700$), except for 150 rpm agitation speed that system fitted only Langmiur isotherm. The results of this study emphasize that pumice powder can be used as a low cost and effective adsorbent for dye removal.

  • Performances of combined adsorption and coagulation were evaluated as one of the options for pre-treatment or post-treatment of MSW landfills leachate and industrial landfill leachate. The COD and color removals of leachate from an old MSW landfill were 35% and 33% at an alum dose of 300mg/L with preceding PAC(powdered activated carbon) dose of 200mg/L, respectively. The COD and color removals of leachate from an young MSW landfill were 58% and 25% at an alum dose of 700mg/L and PAC dose of 500mg/L, respectively. The COD and color of biologically treated leachate from an industrial waste landfill were removed up to 32% and 68%, respectively, with pH control at addition of 500mgAlum/L and 1,000mgPAC/L. Adsorption and coagulation process with pH control showed better COD and color removals than the process without pH control for biologically treated leachate from an industrial waste landfill. The color removal was influenced greatly by pH control, while COD removal was not significant. No difference in removal efficiency was observed between adsorption-coagulation and coagulation-adsorption process. The COD removal was accomplished mainly by adsorption, while coagulation was a key mechanism of color removal. However, the mechanism of COD removal was obscure, when BOD/COD ratio was high. Maximum net increases in COD and color removals by the adsorption-coagulation process were respectively 45% and 46% compared with the unit process of adsorption or coagulation, although those removals depended on leachate characteristics. Thus, adsorption-coagulation process was considered to be effective for pre- and post-treatment of landfill leachate, and has distinct features of simple, flexible, stable and reliable operation against fluctuation leachate quality and flowrate.

  • In this study, the activated red mud was used as a new and appropriate adsorbent for the removal of ferrocyanide and ferricyanide from aqueous solution. Predicting the removal percentage and adsorption capacity of ferro-ferricyanide by activated red mud during the adsorption process is necessary which has been done by modeling and simulation. The artificial neural network (ANN) was used to develop new models for the predictions. A back propagation algorithm model was trained to develop a predictive model. The effective variables including pH, absorbent amount, absorbent type, ionic strength, stirring rate, time, adsorbate type, and adsorbate dosage were considered as inputs of the models. The correlation coefficient value ($R^2$) and root mean square error (RMSE) values of the testing data for the removal percentage and adsorption capacity using ANN models were 0.8560, 12.5667, 0.9329, and 10.8117, respectively. The results showed that the proposed ANN models can be used to predict the removal percentage and adsorption capacity of activated red mud for the removal of ferrocyanide and ferricyanide with reasonable error.

  • The possibility of using carica papaya leaf powder for removal of copper from wastewater as a low cost adsorbent was explored. Different parameters that affect the adsorption process like initial concentration of metal ion, time of contact, adsorbent quantity and pH were evaluated and the outcome of the study was tested using adsorption isotherm models. A maximum of 90%-94.1% copper removal was possible from wastewater having low concentration of the metal using papaya leaf powder under optimum conditions by conducting experimental studies. The biosorption of copper ion was influenced by pH and outcome of experimental results indicate the optimum pH as 7.0 for maximum copper removal. Copper distribution between the solid and liquid phases in batch studies was described by isotherms like Langmuir adsorption and Freundlich models. The adsorption process was better represented by the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of copper was measured to be 24.51 mg/g through the Langmuir model. Pseudo-second order rate equation was better suited for the adsorption process. A dynamic mode study was also conducted to analyse the ability of papaya leaf powder to remove copper (II) ions from aqueous solution and the breakthrough curve was described by an S profile. Present study revealed that papaya leaf powder can be used for the removal of copper from the wastewater and low cost water treatment techniques can be developed using this adsorbent.
