Gas adsorption on adsorbents depends on temperatures and pressures. When these parameters are fixed, the adsorption capability and selectivity can not be changed. If the gas adsorption is controlled by another factor like electromagnetic field, the adsorption and desorption can be managed by much intentional way. The microwave has characteristics to excite particular components such as water without destroying it. In this study, microwave was irradiated to the adsorbent of an NaY zeolite which is almost transparent to microwave. As vapor of 1, 1, 2- trichloro-1, 2, 2-trifluoroethane (CFC-113) and water flowed simultaneously on the zeolite packed in a column at room temperature, only water was adsorbed. The . adsorbed water was removed from the zeolite and then replaced by CFC-113, since the microwave was irradiated. Greater the power of microwave was, more CFC-113 was adsorbed. The water adsorption took place again after a latent period by stopping the microwave irradiation.
The ion exchange resins were synthesized from 1-aza-18-crown-6 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous material) divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer with crosslinks of 1%, 6%, and 15% by substitution reaction. These synthetic resins were confirmed by chlorine content, elementary analysis, surface area, and IR-spectrum. The object of this study was to seperate the metal ion absorbed in reinforcement water fire extinguishing agent. As the results of the effects of pH, equilibrium arrival time, and crosslink of synthetic resin on metal ion adsorption for resin adsorbent, the metal ions were showed high adsorption at pH 3 or over and adsorption equilibrium of metal ions was about 2 hours. In addition, adsorption selectivity for the resin in water was the order of Al (III) > Ni (II) > Sm (III) ions, adsorbability of the metal ions was in the crosslinks order of 1%, 6%, and 15%.
Several new ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chloromethyl styrene-1,4-divinylbenzine with 1%, 2%, 5% and 105-crosslink and macrocyclic ligands of cryptand type by interpolymerization method. The adsorption characteristics and the pH, time, solvents and concentration dependence of the adsorption of uranium ion by this resins were studied. The resins were very stable in both acidic and basic media and have good resistance to heat at $300^{\circ}C$. The uranium ion are not adsorbed on the resins below pH 3.0, but the power of adsorption of it increased rapidly above pH 4.0. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of uranium ion was two hours and adsorptive power decreased in proportion to crosslink size of the resins and order of dielectric constants of solvents used and the adsorption for uranium ion was bin the order of $OdienNtn-H_4$ > $OtnNen-H_4$ > $OtnNen-H_4$ > $OenNen-H_4$.
The surface properties and adsorption rates of activated carbon modified with acid and base were compared. The distribution ratio of C and C-H on the surface of activated carbon were decreased by modification with acid and base, but the distribution ratio of C-O, C=O, and O=C-O were increased. Base modification damaged the surface of activated carbon more than acid modification, it caused the effect of 6 percent increments of surface area. Adsorption rate model was more suitable to second order equation than first order equation. Adsorption rate was controlled by adsorption in pore better than in surface.
The dyeing characteristics of Dylon hand dyes on the cotton & silk fabric were studied, and the fastnesses of Dylon hand dyes were compared with those of direct & acid dyes. The results are as follows. 1. Dye adsorption of Dylon hand dyes increased as the concentration of dye increased. 2. Dye adsorption was increased as treatment time increased, and reached to eqilibrium after forty minutes treatment. 3. The temperature at mixiumum adsorption was 6$0^{\circ}C$, in the range of lower temperature than 6$0^{\circ}C$ color was changed, in the range of higher temperature adsorption of dye was decreased. 4. Dye adsorption was increased in direct proprotion to NaCl concentration and reached to equilibrium. But NaCl concentration of even and maximum adsorption was 5%. 5. Wash fastness of Dylon hand dyes was better than direct & acid dyes, but light fastness was worse.
In wet powder processing of alumina, a number of organic molecules such as dispersant and binder are used to produce the flow behavior and properties requisite for shape forming. In this study, interparticle forces of alumina particles suspended in aqueous media were controlled by suspension pH, poly (methacrylic acid) (PMAA, used as dispersant) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA, used as binder). The combined adsorption isotherms of the dispersant and binder additives on alumina were determined by total organic carbon analyzer, while the adsorption of dispersant was differentiated from binder in the mixed additive system by ultraviolet spectroscopy. The electrokinetic behavior of alumina suspensions were then correlated with the adsorption characteristics of dispersant and binder onto alumina particles. It was found that the isoelectric ($pH_{iep}$) of alumina shifted from pH 8.9${\pm}$0.1 to acidic pH as PMAA concentration increased, while PVA adsorption did not affect the $pH_{iep}$ but caused a decrease in the near surface potential.
In this work, the characterization of adsorption of Cu, Zn and Cd on granular activated carbon in water has been studied. The factors that affect adsorption in boundary between activated carbon and wastewater are concentration, temperature, contact time, pH and so on. As the result of this study, the maximum adsorption amount of Cu occurred near pH 7, while that of Zn and Cd was near pH 9.6 and 10, respectively. As contact time and temperature are transformed, such factors as optimum contact time and temperature are taken into consideration in an adsorptive process of heavy metal because an adsorption and a reducing process occur. In isotherm of Freundlich, 1/n values of Cu, Cd capacity were between 0.16 and 0.5.
Agricultural soils around springwaters heavily affected by pesticide run-off and around wells considering the regional characteristics were collected at 24 stations in Jeju Island, and the physicochemical properties and adsorption and leaching characteristics of four nonionic pesticides (diazinon, fenitrothion, alachlor, and metalaxyl) were investigated. The values of the major soil factors affecting the adsorption and leaching of pesticides, namely, soil pH($H_2O$), organic matter content, and cation exchange capacity (CEC), were in the range of 4.64 ~ 8.30, 0.9 ~ 13.1% and 12.7 ~ 31.7 meq/100 g, respectively. The Freundlich constant, $K_F$ value, which gives a measure of the adsorption capacity, decreased in the order of fenitrothion > diazinon > alachlor > metalaxyl, which was identical to their lower water solubility. Among the collected soils, the $K_F$ value was very highly correlated with organic matter content ($r^2=0.800{\sim}0.876$) and CEC ($r^2=0.715{\sim}0.825$) and showed a high correlation with clay content ($r^2=0.473{\sim}0.575$) and soil pH($H_2O$) ($r^2=0.401{\sim}0.452$). The leaching of pesticides in the soil column showed a reverse relationhip with their adsorption in soils, i.e., the pesticides leached more quickly for the soils with lower values of organic matter content and CEC among the soils and for the pesticides with higher water solubility.
The adsorption characteristics of bisphenol A (BPA) were investigated using activated carbon based on waste citrus peel (which is abandoned in large quantities in Jeju Island), denoted as WCP-AC, and surface-modified with various $P_2O_5$ concentrations (WCP-SM-AC). Moreover, coconut-based activated carbon (which is marketed in large amounts) was surface-modified in an identical manner for comparison. The adsorption equilibrium of BPA using the activated carbons before and after surface modification was obtained at nearly 48 h. The adsorption process of BPA by activated carbons and surface-modified activated carbons was well-described by the pseudo second-order kinetic model. The experimental data in the adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir isotherm model. With increasing $P_2O_5$ concentration (250-2,000 mg/L), the amounts of BPA adsorbed by WCP-SM-AC increased till 1,000 mg/L of $P_2O_5$; however, above 1,000 mg/L of $P_2O_5$, the same amounts adsorbed at 1,000 mg/L of $P_2O_5$ were obtained. With increasing reaction temperature, the reaction rate increased, but the adsorbed amounts decreased, especially for the activated carbon before surface modification. The amounts of BPA adsorbed by WCP-AC and WCP-SM-AC were similar in the pH range of 5-9, but significantly decreased at pH 11, and increased with increasing ionic strength due to screening and salting-out effects.
BACKGROUND: Biochar has ability to reduce N loss, increase crop yield, and sequestrate carbon in the soil However, there is still limited study concerning the interactive effects of various biochars on NH3 loss and plant growth. This study, therefore, was conducted to investigate the NH4+ adsorption characteristics of biochar derived from rice and maize residues. METHODS AND RESULTS: By-products were pyrolyzed under oxygen-limited conditions at 300-700℃ for 1 hour and used for experiment of NH4+ adsorption in aqueous solution. The adsorption characteristics of biochar were studied using Langmuir isotherm. Biochar yield and hydrogen content decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperatures, whereas pH, EC, and total carbon content increased. The biochar pyrolyzed at lower temperatures was more efficient at NH4+ adsorption than those produced at higher temperatures. In addition, the RL values, indicating equilibrium coefficient were between 0 and 1, confirming that the result was suitable for Langmuir isotherm. CONCLUSION: The maize stalk biochar pyrolyzed at 300℃ was the most efficient to adsorb NH4+ from the aqueous solution. Furthermore, the adsorption results of this experiment were lower than those of other prior studies, which were ascribed to different experimental conditions such as ingredients, and pyrolysis conditions.
