  • The magnetite ferrofluids of which solvents are water or kerosene have been prepared by making surfactant absorbed on the surface of the magnetite which have been synthesized by air oxidation of Fe(OH)2 at pH 11 and 75$^{\circ}C$, and their basic properties have been measured by XRD, SEM, DTA, TG, viscometer, magnetometer and B-H tracer. The results are as follows ; 1) The shape of magnetite prepared by air oxidation is found to be sphere-like shape and its particle size is smaller than 200A. 2) The maximum amount of sodium oleate adsorbed on the surface of magnetite is about 20% in the weight of the magnetite including the adsorbed sodium oleate. And when magnetite is well dispersed into solvent, R(the weight ratio of the added sodium oleate to Fe3O4) is 0.40-0.48. 3) The dispersion ratio, the viscosity and the magnetization of magnetite ferrofluid are constant regardless of the added amount of sodium oleate above R=0.40-0.48. 4) The magnetic hysteresis curves of magnetite ferrofluid show superparamagnetism-like behavior.

  • Several alkyl chlorides were brominated using LiBr and $CaBr_2$ adsorbed on alumina in the absence of solvent. The yields of alkyl bromides were fairly high. Such a high reactivity by these bromide salts might be due to the interaction of minute amount of water and the salt on alumina. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogram was provided and discussed.

  • It was found that the extracts of Sargassum thumbergii (Sargassaceae) had an anthelmintic action on Ascaris suilla and further examinations were made on the anthelmintic compounds of the seaweed. The anthelmintic principle is soluble in water, adsorbed in aqueous extract with activated carbon and eluted from the carbon with 90% aqueous methanol solution. But it is not adsorbed on alumina and amberite IR-120 (H-type). The anthelmintic fractions were prepared by the use of these properties. The active principle of Sargassum thunbergii was pharmacologically examined and was found to decrease the tenisty, tonus, mobility and amplitude of Eisenia foetida nerve muscles. The active principle was subjected to paper partition chromatography but yellow spot to ninhydrin was not revealed.

  • Adsorption behavior of counterions under a Langmuir monolayer was investigated by sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. By comparing SFG spectra of arachidic acid (AA) Langmuir monolayer/water interface with and without added salt, it was found that the simple trivalent cation $La^{3+}$ adsorbed on AA monolayer only when the carboxylic headgroups are charged (deprotonated), implying that counterion adsorption is induced by Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, metal hydroxide complex $Fe(OH)_3$ adsorbed even on a charge-neutral AA monolayer, indicating that the adsorption of iron hydroxide is due to chemical interaction such as covalent or hydrogen bonding to the headgroup of the molecules at the monolayer.

  • Water is known to playa crucial role on friction of moving parts in nanoscale contact. Little is, however, known about the tribological behavior of a solid surface that is covered with water adsorption layer. The objective of this study is to investigate the nanotribological behavior of the water layer in relation to water affinity of the surface and relative humidity. This paper presents an examination of the frictional behavior of water adsorption layer as 'confined liquid film'. It is shown that the friction is inversely proportional to the hydrophilicity of surface and relative humidity. On the other hand, friction of hydrophobic surface is not influenced by relative humidity. A model is proposed for the water-mediated contact in which it is shown that the water layer between two hydrophilic surfaces with high relative humidity behaves as a lubricant.

  • It is well-known that the presence of NOM (natural organic matter) in water has a negative effect on removing taste and odor compounds by activated carbon adsorption. Therefore, various means such as enhanced coagulation are applied to reduce the NOM. The presence of taste & odor compounds in drinking water even parts per trillion, is enough to generate customer dissatisfaction. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate carbon usage rate (CUR) for conventional coagulation (CC) and enhanced coagulation (EC) in order to improve the efficiency of adsorption of taste and odor compounds. Also, Effect of CC and EC on molecular weight fraction and the early stage breakthrough of 2-MIB and Geosmin are evaluated. When the enhanced coagulation was adapted for pretreatment for activated carbon adsorption the operation period could be prolonged by 3.5~4 times. CUR for CC was about 2 times greater than CUR for EC and this means that EC has more adsorption capacity than CC. To analyze effect of EC and CC on breakthrough of 2-MIB quantitatively, adsorbed NOM mass was calculated based on unit mass of activated carbon. In the early stage breakthrough of 2-MIB, total adsorbed NOM was 23.72mg/g for CC and 34.56mg/g for EC. Therefore, it is shown that the early breakthrough term of 2-MIB and Geosmin was improved due to increased adsorbability. The low-molecular-weight NOM (500~2000Da) compounds were the most competitive, participating in direct competition with 2-MIB for adsorption site.

  • Water vapor adsorption kinetics of 3 different types of chitosan-based films, i.e., control chitosan, chitosan/montmorillionite (Na-MMT), and chitosan/silver-zeolite (Ag-Ion) nanocomposite films, were investigated at temperature range of $10-40^{\circ}C$. In all the films, water vapor is initially adsorbed rapidly and then it comes slowly to reach equilibrium condition. Reasonably good straight lines were obtained with plotting of 1/($m-m_0$) vs. l/t. It was found that water vapor adsorption kinetics of chitosan-based films was accurately described by a simple empirical model and the rate constant of the model followed temperature dependence according to Arrhenius equation. Arrhenius kinetic parameters ($E_a$ and $k_o$) for water vapor adsorption by chitosan-based films showed a kinetic compensation effect between the parameters with the isokinetic temperature of 315.52 K.

  • To investigate the phase equilibria and structural properties of microemulsions, we study a simple phenomenological model on the basis of the cubic lattice cell with which the oil- and water-filled cells are connected one another, respectively. The surfactant is assumed to be insoluble in both oil and water, and to be adsorbed at the oil-water interface. The Schulman condition, according to which the lateral pressure of the surfactant layer is compensated by the oil-water interfacial tension, is found to hold to good approximation in the middle-phase microemulsion. Our results show that the oil- and water-filled domains in that microemulsion are about 50-150 $\AA$ across, and depend sensitively on the curvature parameters. The phase diagram is not symmetric in this model. It may be asymmetrized intrinsically by non-equivalency of oil and water. The two- and tree-phase equilibria including critical points and critical endpoints are found.

  • The dissociation and partial oxidation of $CH_3OH$ on polycrystalline $MoO_3$ powder catalyst were studied using thermal desorption spectrometry(TDS) under high vacuum condition. $CH_3OH$ was dissociatively adsorbed on $MoO_3$ in the forms of surface methoxy($-OCH_3$) and atomic hydrogen(-H). $CH_3OH$ desorbed at 425 K via the re-association of methoxy and adsorbed hydrogen atom, and HCHO desorbed at 545 K through the bond breakage of C-H in methoxy. Water TDS spectra showed two desorption peaks, that is, ${\alpha}$-peak at 428 K and ${\beta}$-peak at 586 K. It was suggested that ${\alpha}$-peak was due to the hydroxyl formed on $MoO_3$ surface during the dissociation of $CH_3OH$, and that ${\beta}$-peak was from the association of lattice oxygen and surface hydrogen atom formed by the bond breakage of C-H in methoxy. Pre-adsorbed oxygen on the surface of $MoO_3$ catalyst increased the amount of adsorption of $CH_3OH$ by promoting the dissociation of $CH_3OH$ on the surface, whereas pre-adsorbed water decreased the amount of adsorption of $CH_3OH$ by blocking of adsorption sites for $CH_3OH$.

  • Soil N mineralization and nitrification can be measured conveniently using mixed bed (cation and anion) exchange resin bags. However, appropriate use of these resin bags requires pretreatment to avoid colorimetric interference and standardize N ion adsorption. Three pretreatments were evaluated : control (untreated), 2 M NaCl with a distilled water rinse, and 4 M NaCl. The 4 M NaCl treatment was effective at removing background levels of $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$, but adsorbed low amounts (about 40%) of inorganic N from standard solutions. Untreated resin bags adsorbed a constant, higher amount of $NO_3{^-}$ (60%), but did not remove background levels of $NH_4{^+}$. The 2 M NaCl treatment followed by a distilled water rinse performed best : it removed background $NH_4{^+}$ and adsorbed a constant amount of both $NH_4{^+}$ (70%) and $NO_3{^-}$ (60%). Because the ion exchange resin is fairly expensive, we also tested if the resin bags could be reused. Resin bags were either loaded with $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ in the laboratory or incubated in soil in the field, desorbed with the 2 M NaCl treatment, and then loaded with standard $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ solutions. Lab loaded resin bags adsorbed about 60% of inorganic N then loaded with 2.5 or $5.0mgN\;1^{-1}$ and 70% when loaded at 10 or $20mgN\;1^{-1}$, whereas reused field incubated bags showed the opposite adsorption efficiency. These results demonstrate that resin bags can give reproducible results, but care must be taken to evaluate the effect of pretreatment and potential for reuse.
