Purpose: Hope has been identified as a protective factor that contributes to achieving a better quality to life, especially in patients with chronic disease. The purpose of this review was to synthesize current knowledge about the relationship between hope and quality of life among adolescents living with chronic illnesses. Methods: We searched major English-language databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, and CINAHL) for studies from January 1, 2002 to July 12, 2019. Studies were included if they provided data on hope and its relationship with quality of life among adolescents with chronic diseases. Results: In total, five articles were selected from the 336 studies that were retrieved. All five studies reported a positive correlation between hope and quality of life, such that people with a higher level of hope had a better quality of life. Hope was found to have direct and indirect effects on quality of life in adolescents with chronic diseases. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals should make more efforts to enhance hope in adolescents with chronic diseases in order to improve their quality of life. Future studies exploring how hope develops in adolescents with chronic diseases and the long-term impact of hope on quality of life are necessary.
This study was to investigate the relationship of BMI, sleep time and experience of oral diseases in adolescents. We want to help develop basic data for improving oral health of adolescents. According to the sample design of the Youth Health Behavior online survey, a total of 57,303 adolescents were analyzed for frequency of composite samples, x2-test of composite samples, and logistic regression of composite samples, and the IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 program was used and the significance level was 0.05. Results, BMI was associated with bad breath, and sleep time was associated with tooth break, pain, bleeding, and bad breath. Therefore, BMI and sleep time should be considered for the management and prevention of oral diseases in adolescents.
Purpose: This study was to identify the factors that influence sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among adolescents in Korea. Methods: The data from the 10~12th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2014~2016) were used to assess the effects of individual, family, and school-related factors on sexually transmitted infections. The participants of this study were 9,760 adolescents who had experienced sexual intercourse. The participants consisted of 6,905 boys and 2,855 girls. Results: Out of 9,760 adolescents with sexual intercourse experience, 9.7% (908) had STIs. Grade, substance abuse, age at first sexual intercourse, having sexual intercourse after drinking alcohol, the type of sex partner and family structure were significantly related STIs in both boys and girls. Using condoms was related to STIs only in boys. Drinking alcohol and smoking were related to STIs only in girls. However, sex education at school was not related to STIs in both boys and girls. Conclusion: In this study, Individual and family factors were associated with STIs in male and female adolescents. The results of this study suggest the need for systematic research on the factors influencing STIs and health eduation for STI prevention.
Purpose: This study was done to develop an educational needs scale for the prevention of cell phone addiction and to investigate the educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction in Korean adolescents. Methods: The participants were 609 adolescents in one middle school and two high schools. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, and analyzed using the SPSS program. Results: Twenty items regarding the educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction were selected for the final scale, and categorized into 3 factors (diagnosis and management, properties, and definition and actual condition) which explained 61.09% of the total variance. The educational needs for the prevention of cell phone addiction in adolescents were moderate, with items related to diagnosis and management ranked as most important. The educational needs for prevention of cell phone addiction varied by gender, grade, academic achievement, perception of health status, satisfaction with school, and text messaging participants. Conclusion: The findings indicate that educational needs for diagnosis and management of cell phone addiction ranked as most important in adolescents. Therefore, programs related to the prevention and management of cell phone addiction based on the educational needs of adolescents should be provided.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is the tooth decay ratio of the children and adolescents in four rural areas of Kyrgyzstan. Methods: Oral examinations were conducted 2,677 children and adolescents in Nizhniy chuy, Bokonbayevo, Chon Tash and Arashan from March 2017 to November 2019. It was investigated decayed tooth ratio(DT), decay permanent tooth ratio(DPT) and missing permanent tooth ratio(DMT) according to ages and areas by direct observation of the oral cavity. Results: In all areas, the rate of all children and adolescents aged 6 to 14 had very high DT of more than 94 percent overall. Furthermore, it was showed that high DPT rates above 78% on average and DMT over 8 years old in Chon Tash and Arashan. Conclusion: These results are higher than the average of DT, DPT and DMT in OECD countries. In order to promote oral health of children and adolescents, increased interest in oral health and policy measures at the Kyrgyzstan government level are considered urgent.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting periodontal disease-related symptoms in adolescents using raw data from the 16th (2020) online survey on adolescent health. Methods: Data were collected from the survey entries, and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0. A multi-sample chi-square test was performed to determine periodontal disease-related symptoms according to demographic characteristics, lifestyles, exercise habits, and psychological factors. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors affecting periodontal disease-related symptoms. Results: Periodontal disease-related symptoms were higher in female, high school-age adolescents, and those with lower economic status. Increased alcohol intake, having breakfast 3 days or less a week, ingesting sweet drinks and fast food three or more times a week, and zero water intake were found to have a greater effect on periodontal disease-related symptoms. Higher levels of stress, fewer hours of sleep, and feeling less healthy were also factors leading to increased periodontal disease-related symptoms. Conclusions: Adolescents have various factors that are associated with periodontal disease. A method to reduce rates of periodontal disease in adolescents should be developed, along with a school oral health education program.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a predictive model for self-esteem of adolescents in multicultural families. The study was based on the theory of family stress model and literature review. Methods: This study used some of the data from the 1st year (2011) to the 6th year (2016) of the 'Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS)'. Data analysis was conducted for 1,208 children and 1,208 mothers from the data of the 4th MAPS (2014), which was the first year of the middle school students. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS-WIN Version 20.0 and AMOS Version 20.0. Results: The factors that have influence on the self-esteem of multicultural adolescents are mother's parenting attitude and mother's self-esteem. The explanatory power of these variables was 14%. Conclusion: To increase the self-esteem of multicultural adolescents, a program that can positively change the self-esteem and parenting attitudes of multicultural mothers should be developed, and various social supports should be provided for multicultural mothers.
Purpose: Guided by Newman's theory of health as expanding consciousness, this study was done to explore the health experience of adolescents having depression. Methods: The researcher engaged in six to eight in-depth interviews with six adolescents. To begin the dialog, the researcher asked each participant to recount the first important memory he/ she had. All the narrative and diagram sharing between the researcher and participants were summarized according to recognized patterns and later elaborated in following interviews based on Newman's praxis methodology. Results: The significant individual pattern of early health experience was during the binding stage. At the turning point, individual patterns for participants revealed a personal journey of self-discovery and then emergence of reflecting behaviors. After the turning point, the participants changed as they evolved from the initial period of disruption and disorganization to organization at a higher level. The results suggest that adolescents who are depressive find new ways of relating to friends, family, healthcare providers, and the community by expanding their consciousness. Conclusion: Newman's praxis methodology is a good way of helping and studying adolescents with depression because it emphasizes participant-nurse/researcher partnership and pattern recognition as nursing practice.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between sitting time and BMI-defined low weight and overweight/obesity in Korean adolescents. Methods: Data were from Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey (KYRBS) in 2015 including 63,345 adolescents aged 12-18 years. The analysis investigated low-weight and overweight/obesity odds ratio(OR) according to study sitting time and leisure sitting time adjusted for sex, school grade, social-economic status(SES), physical activity and sleeping time. Results: After adjusting for sex, school grade, SES, physical activity and sleeping time, study sitting time and leisure sitting time were not significantly associated with low-weight. However, leisure sitting time was positively associated with overweight/obesity. Conclusions: Health program to less sitting time should be established with consideration for differences in risk according to sex, age, SES and active leisure time through the school physical class should be provided to adolescents. Additionally, strategies to promote healthy weight are required to integrate sitting time, physical activity and sleeping time in Korean adolescents.

Background: Few studies have explored the knowledge and attitudes of adolescents toward cancer prevention and treatment. This lack of research and its potential utility in the development of new educational initiatives and screening methods, or the reconstruction of existing ones, provided the impetus for this study. The primary research aim was to assess secondary school student knowledge of cancer and determine whether or not they possessed basic knowledge of cancer symptoms, risk factors, and treatments and to determine the relationship between cancer knowledge and key demographic factors. Materials and Methods: The Management and Science University conducted a cross-sectional study analyzing responses through cross-tabulation with the socio-demographic data collected. Results: The findings of our quantitative analysis suggest that Malaysian youth generally possess a moderate knowledge about cancer. Quantitative analyses found that socioeconomic inequalities and bias in education present as important factors contributing to cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment among Malaysian adolescents. Conclusions: The findings indicate that Malaysian youth generally possess a moderate knowledge about cancer but the current deficiencies in initiatives directed to cancer awareness continue to hinder the improvement in prevention of cancer among Malaysian adolescents.
