Advanced Structural Silicone Glazing

  • This paper presents an advanced engineering technique using finite element analysis to improve structural silicone glazing (SSG) design in high-performance curtain wall systems for building facade. High wind pressures often result in bulky SSG aluminum extrusion profile dimensions. Architectural desire for aesthetically slender curtain wall sight-lines and reduction in aluminum usage led to optimization of structural silicone bite geometry for improved stress distribution through use of finite element analysis of the hyperelastic silicone models. This advanced design technique compared to traditional SSG design highlights differences in stress distribution contours in the silicone sealant. Simplified structural engineering per the traditional SSG design method lacks accurate forecasting of material and stress optimization, as shown in the advanced analysis and design. Full scale physical specimens were tested to verify design capacity in addition to correlate physical test results with the theoretical simulation to provide confidence of the model. This design technique will introduce significant engineering advancement to the curtain wall industry and building facade.

  • 감자튀김시 Silicone oil의 튀김유 산화방지효과에 대하여 검토하였다. 1. 감자튀김시 SO가 첨가된 튀김유가 SO가 첨가되지 않은 튀김유에 비하여 튀김유의 AV, Dielectiric constant, Smoke point, Oxidative stability 저하지연효과가 좋았으며, SO의 첨가량이 $1{\sim}10ppm$사이에 있어서는 튀김초기에는 큰 차이가 없으나 튀김시간이 길어질수록 SO의 첨가량이 많은 것이 산화에 대한 안정성이 높았다. 2. 감자튀김의 경우 SO를 $1{\sim}10ppm$의 사이로 첨가하면 튀김시 튀김유의 열화를 실용적으로 지연시킬 수 있었다.

고흡수성 수지를 이용한 흡수성 실리콘의 특성 연구 (Study on the Characteristics of the Absorbency Silicone by Super Absorbent Polymers)

  • 실리콘 수지는 소수성이 강한 고분자이기 때문에 수분을 흡수하는 기능이 전혀 없다. 하지만 고흡수성 수지(Super Absorbent Polymer)를 첨가제로 사용하면 기존의 실리콘보다 월등한 흡수성을 갖게 된다. 본 연구에서는 무정형 형태의 입자 크기가 다른 아크릴계 고흡수성 수지 3가지를 선택하여 배합비를 설정하고 2액형 타입의 의료용 실리콘 소재에 적용해서 수분을 흡수하는 기능을 갖는 새로운 실리콘 소재를 개발하였다. 고흡수성 수지의 첨가에 의한 실리콘 수지의 제조시 입자 사이즈와 함량을 달리하면서 인장, 인열, 압축, 경도에 대한 기계적 물성 변화를 알아보았으며, 시간에 따른 실리콘 수지의 흡수성을 측정하였다. 또한 전자 현미경을 통해 고흡수성 수지의 입자형태와 실리콘 수지와의 분포도를 관찰하였다.

  • In this paper, we evaluated the effect of accumulated charges on hydrophobicity of room temperature vulcanized(RTV) silicone rubber, which could improve the contamination performance of porcelain insulators, with uv radiation time. Outdoor insulating material could be charged by the corona discharge on field intensified area of insulator and discharge between the water drops. In addition, we performed the accelerated uv radiation on samples and investigated the change of charging decay with time. In this results, it is found that silica-like structure on the surface of RTV silicone rubber was formed by uv treatments and this layer have the characteristic of retaining the charges on surface for a long time. These charges have effects on its hydrophobicity and so adversely effects on contamination performance. Based on our results, we discussed the other degradation mechanism with well known ones.

LED Encapsulation 실리콘의 기포잔류방지를 위한 Step 경화공정 연구 (A multi Step Cure Process to Prevent Residual Bubbles in LED Encapsulation Silicone Resin)

  • Generally, rapid cure reaction of LED encapsulation silicone resin causes serious defects in cured resin products such as warpage, residual bubbles, and reduced wettablility. In order to prevent residual bubbles in silicone resin, the step cure process was examined in the present paper. Three kinds of step cure processes were applied, and bubble-free phenomenon was observed. Most of the bubbles were removed under $70^{\circ}C$, the minimum temperature for activating cure reaction. In addition, degree of cure(DOC) and temperature distribution were predicted by using FEM analysis of heat transfer. It was concluded that maintaining cure temperature which provide a DOC under 0.5~0.6 effectively reduces residual bubbles.

  • This paper presents the effects of accumulation of surface charges on hydrophobic level and the changes of surface potential decay with various artificial environment treatments on high temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber used for outdoor insulating material. For this study, the charging apparatus by corona discharge, in which grid electrode was installed between the main corona and ground electrode, was used. From this study, it was found that the accumulation of surface charges above a critical surface potential on silicone insulating materials could lead to the temporary loss of surface hydrophobicity. In addition, corona stress and water absorption stress increase the decay rate of surface charges of HTV silicone rubber, while ultraviolet (UV) stress causes longer decay time. We could conclude that the effects of surface charges on hydrophobicity level and the changes of surface state by various artificial treatments were found through a trend of surface potential decay.

  • This paper investigated the aging characteristic under long-term corona discharge on roan temperature vulcanized silicone rubber, which has been using as a protective coating material for solving the contaminant problem. The applied electrical field is 10kV/cm ac and corona discharge treatment was applied on RTV silicone rubber sheet for maximum 250 hours. With the duration of corona discharge. the diffusible low molecular weight species increased, which was determined the usage of n-hexane extraction method. In addition, the contaminant layer was formed on the treated surface, and then measured the contact angle. We investigated the relation of contact angle and diffusible low molecular weight species. It is found that scissor of main chain PDMS and side chains $(CH_3)$ and the generation of LMW species were occurred by a corona discharge. The improvement of hydrophobicity rate is thought due to the increase of diffusible LMW species.

Compatibility of POSS Composites with Silicone Monomers and Application to Contact Lenses Material

  • This research was conducted to analyze the compatibility of used monomers and produce the high functional contact lens material containing silicone monomers. Silicone monomer (Sil-OH), Trimethylsilylmethacrylate (TSMA) were used as additives for the basic combination of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methyl acrylate (MA). And also, the materials were copolymerized with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linking agent, AIBN (thermal polymerization initiator) as the initiator. It is judged that the fabricated lenses of all combinations are optically excellent and thus used monomers have good compatibility. Measurement of the optical and physical characteristics of the manufactured hydrophilic lens material were varied in each case. Especially TSMA with POSS increases the oxygen permeability and Sil-OH with POSS increases the wettability by the addition of Sil-OH. These materials were considered to have compatibility each other, so it can be used in functional contact lens material.

  • Radon, a carcinogenic substance generated from soil or building materials, have to be fundamentally blocked from entering indoors. In this study, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)/silicone emulsions with excellent mechanical and thermal properties and effective blocking of radon gas were prepared by using radiation technology. As the electron-beam irradiation does increased, a partially crosslinked structure was formed in EVA molecular chain, increasing tensile properties and adhesive strength. The EVA/silicone film showed excellent thermal stability without deformation. In addition, the non-irradiated EVA/silicone film showed a radon blocking rate of about a 75%, while the EVA/silicone film irradiated with 3 and 5 kGy showed an excellent radon blocking rate of over 90% due to the formation of crosslinked structure in the EVA molecular chain. These results indicated that the radiation technology can effectively block radon by forming a partially crosslinked structure of EVA/silicone emulsion to improve tensile property, adhesive strength, and deformation stability.
