The lowest power mode (passive-standby mode) was proposed for reducing the power consumption of set-top boxes in a standby state when not receiving content. However, low-power set-top boxes equipped with the lowest power mode have been rarely commercialized because of their low-quality user experience. In the lowest power mode, they deactivates almost all of operational modules and processes, and thus require dozens of seconds for activation latency (that is, the latency for activating all modules of the set-top boxes in a standby state). They are not even updated in a standby state because they deactivate their network interfaces in a standby state. This paper proposes an adaptive standby mode scheduling method for improving the user experience of such boxes. Set-top boxes using the proposed method can analyze the activation pattern and find the frequently used time period (that is, when the set-top boxes are frequently activated). They prepare for their activation during this frequently used time period, thereby reducing the activation latency and enabling their update in a standby state.

The present research investigated and compared stress coping strategies of North Korean refugees with those of South Koreans in the purpose to predict and prepare psychological conflicts expected to occur during the Korean reunification. Adapted from Han, Hur, Chae, and Kim(2001), North Korean refugees recorded their coping strategies that they would employ in stressful situations varying in term of three aspects of stress causes - 2(locus: internal/external) × 2(stability: temporal/enduring) × 2(context: individual/interpersonal) - and the responses were classified in terms of three dimensions(active/passive, approach/avoidance, cognitive/affective/behavioral). In the temporal stress situations, adaptive North Korean refugees preferred active over passive, approaching over avoiding, and behavioral over cognitive/affective stress coping strategies more than maladaptive North Korean refugees did. Also, in the stressful situations caused by external causes, they were more likely to take active rather than passive, approaching rather than avoiding copying. Although active copying strategies were preferred to passive ones by adaptive North Korean refugees in individual stressful situations, approaching copying strategies were preferred to avoiding ones by them in interpersonal stressful situations. These findings were found to be different from the pattern of South Korean's stress coping strategies in the same situations. In conclusion, the differences were discussed in the view of psychological integration during Korean reunification.
Ethernet passive optical network(EPON) is the next-generation technology for supporting services of high-quality at low-cost. In the EPON, all optical network units(ONUs) have to share a limited uplink channel for upstream data. In order to satisfy bandwidth demands of users on high-capacity local access networks(LANs), the optical line terminal(OLT) efficiently divides and allocates time slots of uplink channel to all ONUs. We discuss previous schemes for dynamic bandwidth allocation(DBA), such as interleaved polling with adaptive cycle time(IPACT) and sliding cycle time(SLICT). In this paper, dynamic right sizing of maximum-windows(DRSM), as a novel bandwidth allocation service, is proposed for more effective and efficient time slot allocation of the uplink channel. DRSM which is based on past information of bandwidth allocated by OLT calculates maximum available bandwidth and dynamically alters the maximum window size for the next ONU. This scheme does not only exert every effort to meet bandwidth demands of ONUs with the possible scope, it also seeks fairness of bandwidth allocation among ONUs.
In this study, the influence of mothers' parenting behaviors on children's strategies and competence of emotional regulation was examined. Further, the mediating effects of children's active-social support seeking and aggressive strategies on the above relationship were explored. The participants were W mother-child pairs. The children were 5th and 6th graders at two elementary schools in Kyunggi province and Kwangju metropolitan area The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, Pearson correlations, standard multiple regressions and structural equation modeling analysis by LISREL 8.3. The main results of this study were as follows: (1) The more the mothers coached children with affection and reasoning, the more adaptive emotional regulation the children had; whereas children tended to have maladaptive emotional regulation in response to the mothers' rejecting and forceful parenting behaviors. Also, when children were coached by mothers with love, reasoning and consistent restriction, they used more active-social support seeking strategies, whereas they used more aggressive strategies when the mothers coached children with rejecting and forceful parenting behaviors. The more the mothers were rejecting, forceful and intervening, the more the children used passive-avoidant strategies. (2) The more the children used active-social support seeking strategies and the less the children used aggressive strategies, the more likely they had adaptive emotional regulation. The more the children used aggressive strategies, the more likely they had maladaptive emotional regulation. (3) Children's active-social support seeking strategies played a partial mediating role between mothers' affectionate and reasoned coaching and children's adaptive emotional regulation. These strategies, on the other hand, played a full mediating role between mothers' consistent restriction and children's adaptive emotional regulation. Children's aggressive strategies played a partial mediating role between mothers' rejecting and forceful parenting behaviors and children's maladaptive emotional regulation. Mothers' non-intervention had an influence on neither the children's aggressive strategies nor their maladaptive emotional regulation.
In this paper, a 5Gb/s receiver with an adaptive equalizer for serial link interfaces is proposed. For effective gain control, a least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm was implemented with two internal signals of slicers instead of output node of an equalizing filter. The scheme does not affect on a bandwidth of the equalizing filter. It also can be implemented without passive filter and it saves chip area and power consumption since two internal signals of slicers have a similar DC magnitude. The proposed adaptive equalizer can compensate up to 25dB and operate in various environments, which are 15m shield-twisted pair (STP) cable for DisplayPort and FR-4 traces for backplane. This work is implemented in $0.18-{\mu}m$ 1-poly 4-metal CMOS technology and occupies $200{\times}300{\mu}m^2$. Measurement results show only 6mW small power consumption and 2Gbps operating range with fabricated chip. The equalizer is expected to satisfy up to 5Gbps operating range if stable varactor(RF) is supported by foundry process.

This paper proposes and analyzes a new media access control (MAC) scheduling algorithm, “Interleaved Polling with Deficit Round Robin (IPDRR)” that supports weighted fairness among ONUs in Ethernet Passive Optical Network (PON). The purpose of the proposed IPDRR algerian is not only to eliminate the unused bandwidth of upstream ONU traffic, but also to provide weighted fair sharing of upstream bandwidth among ONUs in Ethernet PON systems. Simulation results show that the IPDRR improves the utilization of upstream channel by removing the unused bandwidth and provides weighted fairness among ONUs, although the IPACT scheduling is unfair according to traffic characteristics.

In this paper we present an adaptive method for accelerating conventional Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) for restoration of Passive Millimeter-Wave (PMMW) image from its blurred and noisy version. MEM is nonlinear and its convergence is very slow. We present a new method to accelerate the MEM by using an exponent on the correction ratio. In this method the exponent is computed adaptively in each iteration, using first-order derivatives of deblurred image in previous two iterations. Using this exponent the accelerated MEM emphasizes speed at the beginning stages and stability at later stages. In accelerated MEM the non-negativity is automatically ensured and also conservation of flux without additional computation. Simulation study shows that the accelerated MEM gives better results in terms of RMSE, SNR, moreover, it takes only about 46% lesser iterations than conventional MEM. This is also confirmed by applying this algorithm on actual PMMW image captured by 94 GHz mechanically scanned radiometer.

Indoor thermal conditions greatly affect the health and comfort of humans who occupy the space in it. The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of water and vegetation elements as a microclimate modifier in buildings to obtain thermal comfort through the study of thermal environment models. This research covers two objects, namely public buildings and housing in Makassar City, South Sulawesi Prov-ince - Indonesia. Quantitative methods through field surveys and measurements based on thermal and personal variables. Data analysis based on ASHRAE 55 2020 standard. The data was processed with a parametric statistical approach and then simulated with the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation method to find a thermal prediction model. The model was made by increasing the ventilation area by 2.0 m2, adding 10% vegetation with shade plant characteristics, moving water features in the form of fountains and increasing the pool area by 15% to obtain PMV + 0.23, PPD + 8%, TSV-1 - +0, Ta_25.7℃, and relative humidity 63.5 - 66%. The evaluation shows that the operating temperature can analyze the visitor's comfort temperature range of >80% and comply with the ASHRAE 55-2020 standard. It is concluded that water elements and indoor vegetation can be microclimate modifiers in buildings to create desired comfort conditions and adaptive con-trols in buildings such as the arrangement of water elements and vegetation and ventilation systems to provide passive cooling effects in buildings.
Base isolation, one of the popular seismic protection approaches proven to be effective in practical applications, has been widely applied worldwide during the past few decades. As the techniques mature, it has been recognised that, the biggest issue faced in base isolation technique is the challenge of great base displacement demand, which leads to the potential of overturning of the structure, instability and permanent damage of the isolators. Meanwhile, drain, ventilation and regular maintenance at the base isolation level are quite difficult and rather time- and fund- consuming, especially in the highly populated areas. To address these challenges, a number of efforts have been dedicated to propose new isolation systems, including segmental building, additional storey isolation (ASI) and mid-storey isolation system, etc. However, such techniques have their own flaws, among which whipping effect is the most obvious one. Moreover, due to their inherent passive nature, all these techniques, including traditional base isolation system, show incapability to cope with the unpredictable and diverse nature of earthquakes. The solution for the aforementioned challenge is to develop an innovative vibration isolation system to realise variable structural stiffness to maximise the adaptability and controllability of the system. Recently, advances on the development of an adaptive magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) vibration isolator has enlightened the development of adaptive base isolation systems due to its ability to alter stiffness by changing applied electrical current. In this study, an innovative semi-active storey isolation system inserting such novel MRE isolators between each floor is proposed. The stiffness of each level in the proposed isolation system can thus be changed according to characteristics of the MRE isolators. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm type II (NSGA-II) with dynamic crowding distance (DCD) is utilised for the optimisation of the parameters at isolation level in the system. Extensive comparative simulation studies have been conducted using 5-storey benchmark model to evaluate the performance of the proposed isolation system under different earthquake excitations. Simulation results compare the seismic responses of bare building, building with passive controlled MRE base isolation system, building with passive-controlled MRE storey isolation system and building with optimised storey isolation system.
This paper presents design and integration of the ROBHAZ-DT3, which is a newly developed mobile robot system with chained double-track mechanisms. A passive adaptation mechanism equipped between the front and rear body enables the ROBHAZ-DT3 to have good adaptability to uneven terrains including stairs. The passive adaptation mechanism reduces energy consumption when moving on uneven terrain as well as its simplicity in design and remote control, since no actuator is necessary for adaptation. Based on this novel mobile platform, a rescue version of the ROBHAZ-DT3 with appropriate sensors and a semi-autonomous mapping and localization algorithm is developed to participate in the RoboCup2004 US-Open: Urban Search and Rescue Competition. From the various experiments in the realistic rescue arena, we can verify that the ROBHAZ-DT3 is reliable in traveling rugged terrain and the proposed mapping and localization algorithm are effective in the unstructured environment with uneven ground. The another application is an military robot for an EOD(Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and reconnaissance mission. The military version of the ROBHAZ-DT3 with a water disrupter, a thermal scope and a long distance wireless communication device is developed and sent to the area of military tactics in Iraq. Consequently, the feasibility of the military version of ROBHAZ-DT3 is verified.
