An adaptive procedure in finite element analysis is presented by p-refinement of meshes in conjunction with a posteriori error estimator that is based on the recovery technique. In case of the recovery technique, the SPR(superconvergent patch recovery) approach has been modified for p-adaptive mesh refinement. The strategy of finding a nearly optimal distribution of polynomial degrees on a fixed finite element mesh is discussed such that a particular element has to be refined automatically to obtain an acceptable level of accuracy by increasing p-levels non-uniformly. To verify the proposed algorithm, the limit value approach is proposed which utilizes the exact strain energy computed from the extrapolation equation. A new pre-processor is developed for the p-version finite element program in which the vector graphic editor is used for the automatic generation of node connection and coordinate by halfedge solid data structure according to uniform or nonuniform p-distribution. The general 2-D algorithm is also developed to generate face modes and internal modes in accordance with different mesh types. The quality of the error estimator is investigated with the help of two mumerical examples. The results show that the sequences of p-distributions obtained by the proposed error indicator closely follow the optimal trajectory.

This paper presents the fast steady state analysis using time-stepping finite element method for a high power three-phase transformer. The high power transformer spends huge computational cost of the time-stepping finite element method. It is because that the high power transformer requires a lot of time to reach steady state by its large inductance component. In order to reduce computational cost, in this paper, the adaptive time-step control algorithm combined with the embedded 2nd 4th singly diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta method and the analysis strategy using variation of the winding resistance are studied, and their numerical results are compared with those from the typical time-stepping finite element method.

The filling pattern and an adaptive grid refinement based on the finite element method and Eulerian mesh advancement approach have been developed to analyze incompressible transient viscous flow with free surfaces. The governing equation fur flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The mixed FE formulation and predictor-corrector method are used effectively for unsteady numerical simulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the filling pattern technique to select an adequate pattern among seven filling patterns at each tetrahedral control volume. By adaptive grid refinement, the new flow field that renders better prediction in flow surface shape is generated and the velocity field at the flow front part is calculated more exactly. In this domain the elements in the surface region are made finer than those in the remaining regions for more efficient computation. The collapse of a water dam and the filling of a fluidity spiral have been analyzed. The numerical results have been in good agreement with the experimental results and the efficiency of the adaptive grid refinement and filling pattern techniques have been verified.

An automated dynamic structural analysis module stands as a crucial element within a structural integrated mitigation system. This module must deliver prompt real-time responses to enable timely actions, such as evacuation or warnings, in response to the severity posed by the structural system. The finite element method, a widely adopted approximate structural analysis approach globally, owes its popularity in part to its user-friendly nature. However, the computational efficiency and accuracy of results depend on the user-provided finite element mesh, with the number of elements and their quality playing pivotal roles. This paper introduces a computationally efficient adaptive mesh generation scheme that optimally combines the h-method of node movement and the r-method of element division for mesh refinement. Adaptive mesh generation schemes automatically create finite element meshes, and in this case, representative strain values for a given mesh are employed for error estimates. When applied to dynamic problems analyzed in the time domain, meshes need to be modified at each time step, considering a few hundred or thousand steps. The algorithm's specifics are demonstrated through a standard cantilever beam example subjected to a concentrated load at the free end. Additionally, a portal frame example showcases the generation of various robust meshes. These examples illustrate the adaptive algorithm's capability to produce robust meshes, ensuring reasonable accuracy and efficient computing time. Moreover, the study highlights the potential for the scheme's effective application in complex structural dynamic problems, such as those subjected to seismic or erratic wind loads. It also emphasizes its suitability for general nonlinear analysis problems, establishing the versatility and reliability of the proposed adaptive mesh generation scheme.
Remeshing strategies are formulated for r-adaptive and h/r-adaptive analysis of crack propagation. The relocation of the nodes, which typifies r-adaptivity, is a very cheap method to optimise a given discretisation since the element connectivity remains unaltered. However, the applicability is limited. To further improve the finite element mesh, a combined h/r-adaptive method is proposed in which h-adaptivity is applied whenever r-adaptivity is not capable of further improving the discretisation. Two and three-dimensional examples are presented. It is shown that the r-adaptive approach can optimise a discretisation at minimal computational costs. Further, the combined h/r-adaptive approach improves the performance of a fully r-adaptive technique while the number of h-remeshings is reduced compared to a fully h-adaptive technique.

A three dimensional adaptive finite element refinement algorithm is developed for non-linear magnetostatic field problems. In the method, the edge elements are used for finite element formulation, and the local error in each element is estimated from the fact that the tangential components of magnetic field intensity and the normal components of magnetic flux density should be continuous at the interface of the two adjacent elements. Based on the estimated error, the elements which have big error are divided into several elements using bisection method. The effectiveness of the developed algorithm is proved through numerical examples.

The governing equation for flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The mixed FE formulation and predictor-corrector method are used effectively for unsteady numerical simulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the filling pattern technique to select an adequate pattern among four filling patterns at each triangular control volume. By adaptive grid refinement, the new flow field that renders better prediction in flow surface shape is generated and the velocity field at the flow front part is calculated more exactly. In this domain the elements in the surface region are made finer than those in the remaining regions for more efficient computation. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a water dam has been analyzed to predict flow phenomenon of fluid and the predicted front positions with respect to time have been compared with the reported experimental results.

This paper describes a meshless of element-free method based on fuzzy knowledge processing. To efficiently simulate complicated physical phenomena with dynmics and non-linear ploblem using computational mechanics, special method is required such as parallel processing or adaptive analysis techniques. However, the conventional finite element method is too complicated to be employed in the above cases. In order to reduce the above complexity of the conventional finite element analysis systms, the so called meshles finite elements as an input information have been stuided. Node is generated if its distance form existing node points is similar to the node spacing fuction at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several three-dimensional(3D) problems.

With rapid economic growth, numerous deep excavation projects for high-rise buildings and subway transportation networks have been constructed in the past two decades. Deep excavations particularly in thick deposits of soft clay may cause excessive ground movements and thus result in potential damage to adjacent buildings and supporting utilities. Extensive plane strain finite element analyses considering small strain effect have been carried out to examine the wall deflections for excavations in soft clay deposits supported by diaphragm walls and bracings. The excavation geometrical parameters, soil strength and stiffness properties, soil unit weight, the strut stiffness and wall stiffness were varied to study the wall deflection behaviour. Based on these results, a multivariate adaptive regression splines model was developed for estimating the maximum wall deflection. Parametric analyses were also performed to investigate the influence of the various design variables on wall deflections.
