  • A study on elemental speciation of trace metals in lake water (Lake Biwa in Japan) has been carried out by a size exclusion chromatography (SEC) / inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) system. Before analysis, the water sample was preconcentrated with a ultrafiltration technique, where the large molecules with molecular weight larger than 10,000 were concentrated. Then the preconcentrated water samples (500-1000 fold) were analyzed by a SEC/ICP-MS system. Most trace metals were found at the UV absorption peaks corresponding to the molecular weights of ca. 300,000 and 10,000-50,000, where trace metals were on-line detected by ICP-MS. The results suggest that many of trace metals exist as the large organic molecules-metal complexes in natural water.

  • For the noise reduction measures in a construction field or near the traffic line receiver is often the most economic measure in order to exclude the propagated sound. The dimension of the barrier is decided by the noise and construction design, and the constructive quality of a soundproof panel shall be secured in accordance with KS F4770 to guarantee the safety of sound barriers. In this paper the problems included in the KS F4770-1 that is the regulation for the metallic sound barrier of the absorption type are identified and it is suggested what to be corrected or improved. Through a series of the analyses, conclusions were reached that it is required to improve test methods in KS F4770-1 as well as to break down test loads for building more cost-effective sound barrier.

  • Optical characteristics of $YCOB(YCa_4B_3O_{10})$, known as a crystal of self frequency doubling, was investigated when Yb and Er ions were co-doped 20 % and 2 %, respectively. The absorption cross section of Er,Yb:YCOB crystal at $1.0\;{\mu}m$ was larger than that of Yb:YCOB, which means that the former was profitable for more energy absorption than the latter. The fluorescent lifetime at $1.5\;{\mu}m$ was measured to be 1.27 ms at room temperature, and lengthened to 1.54 ms and 1.62 ms at low temperatures of 77 K and 6 K, respectively. The line widths of fluorescent spectrum at $1.5\;{\mu}m$ were getting narrower as lowering temperature. However, we didn't observe a temperature dependent peak wavelength shift.

  • Spectra of reflected sunlight from Mars and Jupiter are presented. They were obtained from an educational 1-D array spectrograph covering almost a full range of visible wavelengths, 200~900 nm with 1 nm spectral resolution. The question was whether a spectral difference could be obtained between that of terrestrial planets and gas planets with an educational spectrograph. It was installed in a 12-inch reflecting telescope at the Korea Science Academy of KAIST in Busan. Both spectra show clear absorption lines of reflected sunlight. They shows differences oin line presence, but are not very significant. This work means that the spectrograph successfully observed the reflected spectra of planets and can detect differences in spectra in terms of the absence and presence of absorption lines of planets.

  • Differential absorption LIDAR (DIAL) is frequently used for atmospheric gas monitoring to detect impurities such as nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, iodine, and ozone. However, large differences in the on- and off-line laser wavelengths can cause serious errors owing to differential aerosol scattering. To resolve this problem, we have developed a new DIAL system for iodine vapor measurements in particular. The suggested DIAL system uses only one laser under seeded and unseeded conditions. To check the detection-sensitivity and error effects, we compared the results from a system using two seeded lasers with those from a system using a seeded and an unseeded laser. We demonstrate that the iodine concentration sensitivity of our system is improved in comparison to the conventional two seeded or two unseeded laser combinations.

  • We propose a diode-pumped cesium laser using frequency locking of a pump laser that can effectively increase the maximum output power of the cesium laser. We simultaneously monitored the absorption spectrum of cesium and the laser output power, and the frequency of pump laser was locked at the center of the $D_2$ absorption line of the cesium atom to obtain an effective gain enhancement. Using this scheme, we have achieved output power increase of ~0.1 W compared to when frequency locking was not applied. Furthermore, by optimizing the temperature of the cesium cell and the reflectivity of the output coupler, we successfully achieved an output power of 1.4 W using the pump power of 2.9 W, providing a slope efficiency of 61.5% and optical-to-optical efficiency of 49%.

  • We present measurements of the Fe $K{\alpha}$ emission line of the intermediate polar V1223 Sagittarii observed with the Suzaku satellite. The spectrum is modeled with an absorbed thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum and three Gaussians for the three components of the Fe $K{\alpha}$ lines. We resolve the neutral or low-ionized (6.41keV), He-like (6.70keV), and H-like (7.00keV) iron lines. We also obtain a thermal continuum temperature of 25 keV, which supports a thermal origin of the hard X-rays observed from the shock heated layers of gas between the white dwarf and the shock front. Hence, we believe that the He-like and H-like lines are from the collisional plasma. On the origin of the Fe $K{\alpha}$ fluorescence line, we find that it could be partly from reflections of hard X-rays from the white dwarf surface and the $N_H$ absorption columns. We also discuss the Fe $K{\alpha}$ emission line as veritable tool for the probe of some astrophysical sites.

  • There are few reports of high frequency loss behavior in the near-field for magnetic films with semiconducting properties, even though semiconducting magnetic materials, such as soft magnetic amorphous alloys and nanocrystalline thin films, have been demonstrated. The electromagnetic loss behavior of multilayer magnetic films with semiconducting properties on the microstrip line in quasi-microwave frequency band was analyzed numerically using a commercial finite-element based electromagnetic solver. The large increase in the absorption performance and broadband characteristics of the semiconducting/insulating layer magnetic films examined in this study were attributed to an increase in the loss factor of resistive loss. The electromagnetic reflection increased significantly with increasing conductivity, and the loss power deteriorated significantly. The numerical results of the magnetic field distribution showed that a strong radiated signal on the microstrip line was emitted with increasing conductivity and decreasing film thickness due to re-reflection of the radiated wave from the surface of the magnetic film, even though the emitted levels varied with film thickness.

  • In this study, air density in a narrow test section is measured using a laser absorption spectroscopy system that detects oxygen absorption lines. An absorption line pair at 13156.28 and 13156.62 cm-1 are detected. A gas chamber with a height of 40 mm is used as a narrow test section. A triangular spiral-shaped laser path is applied in the gas chamber to amplify absorption strength by extending laser beam path length. A well-known logarithm amplifier and a secondary amplifier are used to electrically amplify absorption signal. An AC-coupling is applied after the logarithm amplifier for signal saturation prevention and noise suppression. Procedure of calculating spectral absorbance from output signal is introduced considering the logarithm amplifier circuit configuration. Air density is determined by fitting the theoretically calculated spectral absorbance to the measured spectral absorbance. Test conditions with room temperature and a pressure range of 10~100 kPa are made in a gas chamber using a Bourdon pressure gauge. It is confirmed that air density in a narrow test section can be measured within a 16 % error through absorption signal amplification using a triangular spiral-shaped beam path and a logarithm amplifier.

  • Previous studies on the effect of age on intestinal taurine transport in animals have invariably shown a decline in the activity of the transport system with increasing age. In the present study changes in taurine transporter activity were observed during cell differentiation in the human colon carcinoma cell line HT-29 This cell line exhibits various enterocytic characteristics when differentiated and therefore has frequently been used to study the characteristcs and regulation of nutrient and drug absorption in the small intestine at the cellular level. Pre-treatment of the cells with $\beta$-alanine(10mM) reduced the taurine transport activity to 33% of the value for the control cells(p<0.05) which implies that taurine and $\beta$-alanine share a common $\beta$-amino acid transport system for their celluar uptake in the HI-29 was continued until 21 days post seeding. Kinetic studies of the taurine transporter were conducted in the HT-29 cell line with varying taurine concentration(5-60$\mu$M) in the uptake medium Both Vmax and the Michaelis-Menten constant(Km) of taurine transporter were decreased as differentiation of the HT-29 cell line was progressed ; Vmax of the taurine transporter in cells incubated for 4, 14 and 21 days post seeding was 2.79$\pm$3.4m 16.89$\pm$1.74, and 0.85$\pm$0.08 and 0.32$\pm$0.01nmol.mg protein-1 .30min-1 respectively(p<0.001) and Km was 42.3$\pm$3.4, 16.89$\pm$1.74, and 11.2$\pm$3.0$\mu$M respectively (p<0.01) These results indicate that the activity of sodium dependent active taurine transport system in the HT-29 cell line is decreased as confluent cells are differentiated. This phenomenon in cell culture system corresponds well with the earlier observation of lower intestinal taurine transport activity in suckling rats compared to that in adult animals although direct relationship of cell differentiation with in vivo aging process needs further verification.
