Using modified melt-textured grown targets, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition technique at the laser energy density from 1 J/cm$_2$ to 4 J/cm$_2$. All the films showed c-axis preferred orientations, however, a-axis outgrowths on the film surface were considerably increased with an increase of the laser energy density. To examine the origin of the a-axis outgrowth formation, the microstructures of films deposited at 2 J/cm$_2$ and 4 J/cm$_2$ were investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution electron microscopy. It was shown that a significant number of Y$_2$O$_3$ inclusions were formed during the growth of c-axis oriented films at 4 J/cm$_2$. These inclusions formed nucleation sites for the a-axis outgrowths. It is considered that, due to the unstable growth conditions with a high flux density of incident vapor species and the strain induced by the surrounding c-axis films, the Y$_2$O$_3$ inclusions would prefer the nucleation of α-axis grains.

[ $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ ] thin films were deposited by laser ablation using modified melt-textured grown targets. As the laser energy density was increased, the films showed an increasing c-axis orientation and an improvement of superconducting properties. However, at 4 $J/cm^2$, the degree of c-axis alignment and $J_c$ of the film were considerably reduced. These were attributed to the enhanced a-axis outgrowths. It was shown that the increased laser energy density resulted in the formation of $Y_2O_3$ inclusions during the c-axis film growth, and that these inclusions nucleated the a-axis outgrowths.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) associated with liver failure is accompanied by hyperammonemia, severe inflammation, depression, anxiety, and memory deficits as well as liver injury. Recent studies have focused on the liver-brain-inflammation axis to identify a therapeutic solution for patients with HE. Lipocalin-2 is an inflammation-related glycoprotein that is secreted by various organs and is involved in cellular mechanisms including iron homeostasis, glucose metabolism, cell death, neurite outgrowth, and neurogenesis. In this study, we investigated that the roles of lipocalin-2 both in the brain cortex of mice with HE and in Neuro-2a (N2A) cells. We detected elevated levels of lipocalin-2 both in the plasma and liver in a bile duct ligation mouse model of HE. We confirmed changes in cytokine expression, such as interleukin-1β, cyclooxygenase 2 expression, and iron metabolism related to gene expression through AKT-mediated signaling both in the brain cortex of mice with HE and N2A cells. Our data showed negative effects of hepatic lipocalin-2 on cell survival, iron homeostasis, and neurite outgrowth in N2A cells. Thus, we suggest that regulation of lipocalin-2 in the brain in HE may be a critical therapeutic approach to alleviate neuropathological problems focused on the liver-brain axis.

Three ecotypes of the freshwater red alga Compsopogon coeruleus (Balbis) Montagne were recorded from different freshwater and brackish water habitats of Orissa state in the east coast of India. These three had persistent differences in their branching pattern, e.g. (i) acute angle between main axis and lateral branch, (ii) equal or near to right angle between main axis and lateral branch, and (iii) short spine-like outgrowth instead of a branch in older filaments, besides having differences in the length, breadth and thickness of cortex of the thallus. Morphological observation of these taxa, and the ecological characteristics of the habitat of their occurrence is presented.

YBCO films were deposited with various thicknesses from 100nm to 1.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ on single crystal $SrTiO_3$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The effects of different deposition conditions, especially different deposition rates by means of changing the pulsed laser frequency up to 200Hz, on the J$_{c}$ value were studied. For YBCO film with the thickness of 200nm, the $J_{c}$ value of $2.1MA/\textrm{cm}^2$ has been achieved under the high deposition rate of 3.2nm/s (190nm/min). The $J_{c}$ can be maintained greater than $1M/\textrm{cm}^2$ with the thickness less than 1$\mu\textrm{m}$. The X-ray analysis was used to examine the texture, crystallization and surface quality. The SEM was employed to analyze the surface of YBCO, and it was shown the surface of YBCO film became rougher with increasing the thickness. There were many large singular outgrowths and networks of outgrowths on the surface of YBCO films which lowered the density of thick YBCO film. The outgrowth network was probably the a-axis YBCO corresponding to XRD $\theta$-2$\theta$scan and $\chi$-scan which were used to characterize a-axis orientation of YBCO film. The reason for J$_{c}$ declining with increasing the thickness was studied and discussed.sed.
