Iterative methods are often suitable for solving least squares problems min$||Ax-b||_2$, where A $\epsilon\;\mathbb{R}^{m{\times}n}$ is large and sparse. The well known LSQR algorithm is among the iterative methods for solving these problems. A good preconditioner is often needed to speedup the LSQR convergence. In this paper we present the numerical experiments of applying a well known preconditioner for the LSQR algorithm. The preconditioner is based on the $A^T$ A-orthogonalization process which furnishes an incomplete upper-lower factorization of the inverse of the normal matrix $A^T$ A. The main advantage of this preconditioner is that we apply only one of the factors as a right preconditioner for the LSQR algorithm applied to the least squares problem min$||Ax-b||_2$. The preconditioner needs only the sparse matrix-vector product operations and significantly reduces the solution time compared to the unpreconditioned iteration. Finally, some numerical experiments on test matrices from Harwell-Boeing collection are presented to show the robustness and efficiency of this preconditioner.
The limited durability of resin-dentin bonds severely compromises the longevity of composite resin restorations. Resin-dentin bond degradation might occur via degradation of water-rich and resin sparse collagen matrices by host-derived matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). This review article provides overview of current knowledge of the role of MMPs in dentin matrix degradation and four experimental strategies for extending the longevity of resin-dentin bonds. They include: (1) the use of broadspectrum inhibitors of MMPs, (2) the use of cross-linking agents for silencing the activities of MMPs, (3) ethanol wet-bonding with hydrophobic resin, (4) biomimetic remineralization of water-filled collagen matrix. A combination of these strategies will be able to overcome the limitations in resin-dentin adhesion.

Parallel sparse solvers are essential for solving large-scale finite element models. This paper introduces the combination of iterative and direct solver that can be applied efficiently to problems that require continuous solution for a subtly changing sequence of systems of equations. The iterative-direct sparse solver combination technique, proposed and implemented in the parallel sparse solver package, PARDISO, means that iterative sparse solver is applied for the newly updated linear system, but it uses the direct sparse solver's factorization of previous system matrix as a preconditioner. If the solution does not converge until the preset iterations, the solution will be sought by the direct sparse solver, and the last factorization results will be used as a preconditioner for subsequent updated system of equations. In this study, an improved method that sets the maximum number of iterations dynamically at the first Krylov iteration step is proposed and verified thereby enhancing calculation efficiency by the frequency domain analysis.

The synchronous phasor measurement algorithm is the core content of the phasor measurement unit. This manuscript proposes a dynamic synchronous phasor measurement algorithm based on compressed sensing theory. First, a dynamic signal model based on the Taylor series was established. The dynamic power signal was preprocessed using a least mean square error adaptive filter to eliminate interference from noise and harmonic components. A Chirplet overcomplete dictionary was then designed to realize a sparse representation. A reduction of the signal dimension was next achieved using a Gaussian observation matrix. Finally, the improved orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm was used to realize the sparse decomposition of the signal to be detected, the amplitude and phase of the original power signal were estimated according to the best matching atomic parameters, and the total vector error index was used for an error evaluation. Chroma 61511 was used for the output of various signals, the simulation results of which show that the proposed algorithm cannot only effectively filter out interference signals, it also achieves a better dynamic response performance and stability compared with a traditional DFT algorithm and the improved DFT synchronous phasor measurement algorithm, and the phasor measurement accuracy of the signal is greatly improved. In practical applications, the hardware costs of the system can be further reduced.

It was shown that if Q is a fully indecomposable $n{\times}n$ orthogonal matrix then Q has at least 4n-4 nonzero entries in 1993. In this paper, we show that for each integer p with $4n-4{\leq}p{\leq}n^2$, there exist a fully indecomposable $n{\times}n$ orthogonal matrix with exactly p nonzero entries. Furthermore, we obtain a method of construction of a fully indecomposable $n{\times}n$ orthogonal matrix which has exactly 4n-4 nonzero entries. This is a part of the study in sparse matrices.
In this paper, feature extraction methods, which is one field of reducing dimensions of high-dimensional data, are empirically investigated. We selected the traditional PCA(Principal Component Analysis), ICA(Independent Component Analysis), NMF(Non-negative Matrix Factorization), and sNMF(Sparse NMF) for comparisons. ICA has a similar feature with the simple cell of V1. NMF implemented a "parts-based representation in the brain" and sNMF is a improved version of NMF. In order to visually investigate the extracted features, handwritten digits are handled. Also, the extracted features are used to train multi-layer perceptrons for recognition test. The characteristic of each feature extraction method will be useful when applying feature extraction methods to many real-world problems.
In this paper, we first provide comparison results of preconditioned AOR methods with direct preconditioners $I+{\beta}L$, $I+{\beta}U$ and $I+{\beta}(L+U)$ for solving a linear system whose coefficient matrix is a large sparse irreducible L-matrix, where ${\beta}$ > 0. Next we propose how to find a near optimal parameter ${\beta}$ for which Krylov subspace method with these direct preconditioners performs nearly best. Lastly numerical experiments are provided to compare the performance of preconditioned iterative methods and to illustrate the theoretical results.
We show the mixed finite element method which induces solutions that has the same order of errors for both the gradient of the solution and the solution itself. The technique to construct an efficient reusable matrix is suggested. Two families of mixed finite element methods are introduced with an automatic generating technique for matrix with my order of basis. The generated matrix by this technique has more accurate values and is a sparse matrix. This new technique is applied to solve a minimal surface problem.

Due to enormous number of user and limited memory space, the memory saving is become an important issue for big data service these days. In the large scaled multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the Teoplitz channel can play the significance rule to improve the performance as well as power efficiency. In this paper, we propose a Toeplitz channel decomposition based on matrix vectorization. Here we use Toeplitz matrix to the channel for large scaled MIMO system. And we show that the Toeplitz Jacket matrices are decomposed to Cooley-Tukey sparse matrices like fast Fourier transform (FFT).

The wavelet analysis technique is applied in the spectral domain to efficiently represent the multi-scale features of the impedance matrices. In this scheme, the 2-D quadtree decomposition (applying the wavelet transform to only the part of the matrix) method often used in image processing area is applied for a sparse moment matrix. CG(Conjugate-Gradient) method is also applied for saving memory and computation time of wavelet transformed moment matrix. Numerical examples show that for rectangular cylinder case the non-zero elements of the transformed moment matrix grows only as O($N^{1.6}$).
