  • A Signal processor for the open-loop fiber optic gyroscope(FOG) is equipped with a stabilizer to reduce the error due to drift of fiber phase modulator (FPM). The stabilizer is designed to be operated to maintain the ratio of amplitude and phase between harmonics in the FOG signal. When FPM stabilizer is used, the temperature drift of FOG is reduced to less than 0.5 deg/hr in change of 20$^{\circ}C$.

  • The general method to find a H. pylori in the stomach is the rapid urease test but it is only used to decide the infection with H. pylori. In this study, it is tried to develope fiber-optic pH sensor which can be used with gastroscop to quantify H. pylori. To measure the degree of infection with H. pylori, the color change of phenol red according to the degree of pH is measured by optical fibers with different light sources and the optimum distance from a sample to the end of sensor tip is decided by measuring the maximum reflectivity from a sample. Also the sensitivity study is carried out to decide the optimum light source which has sensitive change of reflectivity to the change of pH. It is expected that the fiber-optic pH sensor which measures the degree of infection with H. pylori exactly can be developed.

  • In this study, we fabricated a fiber-optic phantom dosimeter by arraying square type of plastic optical fibers in a PMMA phantom for measuring relative depth doses of therapeutic photon beams. To minimize the cross-talk between fiber-optic dosimeters, we selected appropriate septum by measuring leaked scintillating lights according to the various kinds of septa. In addition, we measured percentage depth doses of 6, 15 MV photon beams using a fiber-optic phantom dosimeter.

  • Stable and tunable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser(EDFL) using a single fiber Bragg grating(FBG) and two coil heaters is proposed and demonstrated. Installing two identical coils into a single FBG, the FBG is symmetrically divided into two different portions. While a current supply to the coil, the refractive index of the FBG under the coil is changed. The FBG can operate as a joint of two different FBGs. Due to the thermo-optic effect of a fiber, the resonance wavelength split into two peaks. The spacing between two adjacent channels was changed as much as the difference of heating power. It was tuned up to 3 nm of wavelength under the electrical power with a 1000 mW. Moreover, the lasing wavelength can be individually tuned without influencing to the adjacent channel.

  • We demonstrate a novel acousto-optic filter using a two-mode photonic crystal fiber. Thanks to endless two-mode operation of the fiber, single notch over a whole spectrum is obtained with tuning range of> 1000 nm.

  • $Si_{3}N_{4}/SiO_{2}/Si_{3}N_{4}$(N/O/N) 다이아프램과 결합된 고감도의 광섬유 Fabry-Peort 압력센서를 개발하여 스트레인 및 그 응답특성을 조사하였다. 먼저, 44 wt% KOH 수용액을 이용한 실리콘 이방성식각기술로 600 nm 두께의 N/O/N 다이아프램을 제조하였으며, 제조된 다이아프램과 광섬유 Fabry-Perot 간섭계를 결합하여 광섬유 압력센서를 구성하였다. 단일모드 광섬유(SMF)내에 $TiO_{2}$ 유전체 박막을 용융접합하여 공극의 길이가 약 2 cm인 광섬유 Fabry-Perot 간섭계를 제작하였다. 광섬유 Fabry-Perot 간섭계의 한쪽 끝은 N/O/N 다이아프램과 결합하였으며, 나머지 한쪽을 3 dB 광결합기를 통해 광측정장치에 연결하였다. $2{\times}2\;mm^{2}$$8{\times}8\;mm^{2}$ 크기의 N/O/N 다이아프램에 대해 응답특성을 조사한 결과, 각각 약 0.11 rad/kPa과 1.57 rad/kPa의 압력감도를 나타내었으며, 선형오차는 0.2 %FS이내였다.

  • 본 광 분포 온도 측정 시스템은 광섬유 자체를 온도 측정용 센서로 이용하는 시스템으로, 한 가닥의 광섬유만을 포설하여 포설된 주변 전체 온도를 수 천 점으로 측정이 가능한 시스템이다. 분포 측정의 경우 측정 점의 수를 많이 할 경우 측정점당 비용을 기존 센서의 비용 수준으로 절감 할 수 있으며 동시에 한 두 가닥의 광섬유로 전체 센서를 연결 할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 일반적으로 통신용으로 사용하는 광케이블 자체를 센서 (optical sensor cable)로 활용하여 최소한 매 1m 간격으로 센서 기능을 할 수 있는 특성을 이용함으로써 각 센서와 수많은 연결선들을 줄이고 시스템은 컴퓨터를 이용하여 데이터저장, 제어나 보관 등 데이터 관리가 용이하며, 실시간 온도 변화에 따른 온도 이력정보를 이용한 실시간 온도 모니터링 시스템을 구축한다.

A novel Fabry-Perot fiber optic temperature sensor for early age hydration heat study in Portland cement concrete

  • Concrete is known as a heterogeneous product which is composed of complex chemical composition and reaction. The development of concrete thermal effect during early age is critical on its future structural health and long term durability. When cement is mixed with water, the exothermic chemical reaction generates hydration heat, which raises the temperature within the concrete. Consequently, cracking may occur if the concrete temperature rises too high or if there is a large temperature difference between the interior and the exterior of concrete structures during early age hydration. This paper describes the contribution of novel Fabry-Perot (FP) fiber optic temperature sensors to investigate the thermal effects of concrete hydration process. Concrete specimens were manufactured under various water-to-cement (w/c) ratios from 0.40 to 0.60. During the first 24 hours of concreting, two FP fiber optic temperature sensors were inserted into concrete specimens with the protection of copper tubing to monitor the surface and core temperature change. The experimental results revealed effects of w/c ratios on surface and core temperature developments during early age hydration, as well as demonstrating that FP fiber optic sensors are capable of capturing temperature variation in the concrete with reliable performance. Temperature profiles are used for calculating the apparent activation energy ($E_a$) and the heat of hydration (H(t)) of concrete, which can help us to better understand cement hydration.

굽힘에 민감한 광섬유를 이용한 광섬유 센서 (Fiber-Optic Sensor Using Bending-Sensitive Fiber)

  • 가변 광 감쇄기에 사용한 굽힘에 민감한 특수 광섬유 (BSF: bending-sensitive fiber)를 이용하여 굽힘에 따라 물리적인 변화를 감지해 내는 광섬유 센서(FOS: fiber-optic sensor)를 제작하였다. BSF를 이용한 FOS의 제작 가능성을 알아보기 위해 BSF의 굽힘 손실을 3차원 유한차분 빔 전파기법을 이용하여 전산모의 하였고 전산모의 결과를 실제 제작된 BSF를 이용한 FOS의 실험 결과와 비교하였다. 특히 제작된 FOS는 센서 상층부에 가해진 압력이 0 MPa에서 0.005 MPa 로 변할 때 광 에너지는 -1 dB에서 -20 dB 까지 감쇄하였다. 반면에 단일모드 광섬유(SMF: single mode fiber)를 이용하여 동일한 구조로 제작된 FOS는 광 에너지의 변화를 보이지 않았다.

Milk Fat Analysis by Fiber-optic Spectroscopy

  • We have evaluated the application of spectroscopy using an insertion-type fiber-optic probe and a sensor at wavelengths from 400 to 1,100 nm to the measurement of milk fat content on dairy farms. The internal reflectance ratios of 183 milk samples were determined with a fiber-optic spectrophotometer at 5$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$ and 40$^{\circ}C$. Partial least squares (PLS) regression was used to develop calibration models for the milk fat. The best accuracy of determination was found for an equation that was obtained using smoothed internal reflectance data and three PLS factors at 20$^{\circ}C$. The correlation coefficients between predicted and reference milk fat at 5$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$ and 40$^{\circ}C$ were r=0.753, r=0.796 and r=0.783, respectively. The predictive explained variances ($Q^2$) of the final model, moreover, were more than 0.550 at all temperatures, and the regression coefficients of determination ($R^2$) were more than 0.6 (60%). Our results indicate that milk has different internal reflectance measured in the range of visible and near infrared wavelengths (400 to 1,100 nm), depending on its fat content.
