Model reference control is control method such that overall response of a plant plus controller approaches that of a given reference model. The reference model provides desired trajectory the plant should follow. There are many kinds of control methods in MRC. However, this paper focuses on Model Reference Sliding Mode Control. The plant of these controls is an uncertain and linear system varying in time, of second order, and with SISO. In this paper, a design scheme of reference model is proposed for MRSMC. The scheme determines reference model based on the information on bounded control inputs, reference inputs and system parameters. It is used to choose a Fixed Reference Model in the process of controller design, to update Variable Reference Model when stepwise reference inputs change and to update Instant Reference Model at every sampling time. The simulation results show that the proposed method yields better control performance than the conventional MRC subject to the stepwise reference input when applied to the position control system for motor system.

A decentralized adaptive control method is proposed for large-scale systems with unknown time-delayed nonlinear interconnections unmatched in control inputs. It is assumed that the time-delayed interaction terms are bounded by unknown nonlinear bounding functions. The nonlinear bounding functions and uncertain nonlinear functions of large-scale systems are compensated by the function approximation technique using neural networks. The dynamic surface control method is extended to design the proposed memoryless local controller for each subsystem of uncertain nonlinear large-scale time delay systems. Therefore, although the interconnected systems consist of a large number of subsystems, the proposed controller can be designed simply. We prove that all the signals in the total closed-loop system are semiglobally uniformly bounded and the control errors converge to an adjustable neighborhood of the origin. Finally, an example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed scheme.

Fuzzy controllers have been successfully applied to many cases to which conventional control algorithms are difficult to be applied. Even though the representations and the processings of data and information in the fuzzy controller are quite different from those in other control algorithms, the information processing operation that it caries out is basically a function ∫: $A{\subset}R^n{\to}R^m$, from a bounded subset A of an n-dimensional Euclidean space to a bounded subset f[A] of an m-dimensional Euclidean space, where n and m are the number of measured states and the number of control inputs of the controlled system, respectively. Under the assumptions of Mamdani's direct reasoning method and C.O.G.(center of gravity) defuzzification method, the fuzzy controllers are proven to perform the mapping of any given functions f with appropriately defined fuzzy sets. The mapping capabilities of fuzzy controllers are analyzed in detail for two cases, ∫: $R^{1}{\to}R^{1}$ and g: $R^{2}{\to}R^{1}$. Also, it will be shown that the results can be extended to multiple dimensional cases.

This paper investigates an adaptive approximation design problem for the tracking control of output-constrained non-affine pure-feedback systems. To satisfy the desired performance without constraint violation, we employ a barrier Lyapunov function which grows to infinity whenever its argument approaches some limits. The main difficulty in dealing with pure-feedback systems considering output constraints is that the system has a non-affine appearance of the constrained variable to be used as a virtual control. To overcome this difficulty, the implicit function theorem and mean value theorem are exploited to assert the existence of the desired virtual and actual controls. The function approximation technique based on adaptive neural networks is used to estimate the desired control inputs. It is shown that all signals in the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded.

Design of a reliable control systems is investigated for a class of uncertain linear plants. The uncertainty considered here is for the ase of uncertainty in the system matrix. A decentralized control scheme with two observer-based feedback controllers is developed, and it is shown that the resulting closed-loop system is reliable in the sense that the control scheme provides guaranteed stability and $H_{\infty}$-norm bounded performance in the event of sensor and/or actuator failures as well as in the presence of parameter uncertainties. We observed that soft-type failures were additional exogenous inputs to the closed-loop system. As a results, the sensor and/or actuator failures can be tolerated in the design, which is achieved by extending the methodology developed in.
This paper deals with the design problem of model reference adaptive controllers for MIMO plants with unknown orders. A design scheme for an adaptive control system based on CGT theorem, which has hierarchical structures derived from backstepping strategies, is proposed for MIMO plants with unknown orders but with known relative MacMillan degrees(relative degrees for SISO plants). It is also shown that all the signals in the resulting control system are bounded, and that the asymptotic tracking is achieved in the case where reference inputs are step.
In this paper, we examine and analyze the concept of different non-integer chaotic systems with external disturbances, uncertainties, and input non-linearities. We consider both drive and response systems with external bounded disturbances and uncertainties. We also consider non-linear control inputs. For synchronization, we introduce the adaptive sliding mode technique, in which we establish the stability of the controlled system by a control which estimates uncertainties and disturbances, and then applies a suitable sliding surface to control them. We use computer simulations to established the efficacy and adeptness of the prospective scheme.

For spacecraft attitude control, reaction wheel (RW) steering laws with more than three wheels for three-axis attitude control can be derived by using a control allocation (CA) approach.1-2 The CA technique deals with a problem of distributing a given control demand to available sets of actuators.3-4 There are many references for CA with applications to aerospace systems. For spacecraft, the control torque command for three body-fixed reference frames can be constructed by a combination of multiple wheels, usually four-wheel pyramid sets. Multi-wheel configurations can be exploited to satisfy a body-axis control torque requirement while satisfying objectives such as minimum control energy.1-2 In general, the reaction wheel steering laws determine required torque command for each wheel in the form of matrix pseudo-inverse. In general, the attitude control command is generated in the form of a feedback control. The spacecraft body angular rate measured by gyros is used to estimate angular displacement also.⁵ Combination of the body angular rate and attitude parameters such as quaternion and MRPs(Modified Rodrigues Parameters) is typically used in synthesizing the control command which should be produced by RWs.¹ The attitude sensor signals are usually corrupted by noise; gyros tend to contain errors such as drift and random noise. The attitude determination system can estimate such errors, and provide best true signals for feedback control.⁶ Even if the attitude determination system, for instance, sophisticated algorithm such as the EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) algorithm⁶, can eliminate the errors efficiently, it is quite probable that the control command still contains noise sources. The noise and/or other high frequency components in the control command would cause the wheel speed to change in an undesirable manner. The closed-loop system, governed by the feedback control law, is also directly affected by the noise due to imperfect sensor characteristics. The noise components in the sensor signal should be mitigated so that the control command is isolated from the noise effect. This can be done by adding a filter to the sensor output or preventing rapid change in the control command. Dynamic control allocation(DCA), recently studied by Härkegård, is to distribute the control command in the sense of dynamics⁴: the allocation is made over a certain time interval, not a fixed time instant. The dynamic behavior of the control command is taken into account in the course of distributing the control command. Not only the control command requirement, but also variation of the control command over a sampling interval is included in the performance criterion to be optimized. The result is a control command in the form of a finite difference equation over the given time interval.⁴ It results in a filter dynamics by taking the previous control command into account for the synthesis of current control command. Stability of the proposed dynamic control allocation (CA) approach was proved to ensure the control command is bounded at the steady-state. In this study, we extended the results presented in Ref. 4 by adding a two-step dynamic CA term in deriving the control allocation law. Also, the strict equality constraint, between the virtual and actual control inputs, is relaxed in order to construct control command with a smooth profile. The proposed DCA technique is applied to a spacecraft attitude control problem. The sensor noise and/or irregular signals, which are existent in most of spacecraft attitude sensors, can be handled effectively by the proposed approach.

This talk presents the overview of the author's research and development activities on fuzzy inference hardware. We involved it with two distinct approaches. The first approach is to use application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) technology. The fuzzy inference method is directly implemented in silicon. The second approach, which is in its preliminary stage, is to use more conventional microprocessor architecture. Here, we use a quantitative technique used by designer of reduced instruction set computer (RISC) to modify an architecture of a microprocessor. In the ASIC approach, we implemented the most widely used fuzzy inference mechanism directly on silicon. The mechanism is beaded on a max-min compositional rule of inference, and Mandami's method of fuzzy implication. The two VLSI fuzzy inference chips are designed, fabricated, and fully tested. Both used a full-custom CMOS technology. The second and more claborate chip was designed at the University of North Carolina(U C) in cooperation with MCNC. Both VLSI chips had muliple datapaths for rule digital fuzzy inference chips had multiple datapaths for rule evaluation, and they executed multiple fuzzy if-then rules in parallel. The AT & T chip is the first digital fuzzy inference chip in the world. It ran with a 20 MHz clock cycle and achieved an approximately 80.000 Fuzzy Logical inferences Per Second (FLIPS). It stored and executed 16 fuzzy if-then rules. Since it was designed as a proof of concept prototype chip, it had minimal amount of peripheral logic for system integration. UNC/MCNC chip consists of 688,131 transistors of which 476,160 are used for RAM memory. It ran with a 10 MHz clock cycle. The chip has a 3-staged pipeline and initiates a computation of new inference every 64 cycle. This chip achieved an approximately 160,000 FLIPS. The new architecture have the following important improvements from the AT & T chip: Programmable rule set memory (RAM). On-chip fuzzification operation by a table lookup method. On-chip defuzzification operation by a centroid method. Reconfigurable architecture for processing two rule formats. RAM/datapath redundancy for higher yield It can store and execute 51 if-then rule of the following format: IF A and B and C and D Then Do E, and Then Do F. With this format, the chip takes four inputs and produces two outputs. By software reconfiguration, it can store and execute 102 if-then rules of the following simpler format using the same datapath: IF A and B Then Do E. With this format the chip takes two inputs and produces one outputs. We have built two VME-bus board systems based on this chip for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The board is now installed in a robot at ORNL. Researchers uses this board for experiment in autonomous robot navigation. The Fuzzy Logic system board places the Fuzzy chip into a VMEbus environment. High level C language functions hide the operational details of the board from the applications programme . The programmer treats rule memories and fuzzification function memories as local structures passed as parameters to the C functions. ASIC fuzzy inference hardware is extremely fast, but they are limited in generality. Many aspects of the design are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a are limited or fixed. We have proposed to designing a fuzzy information processor as an application specific processor using a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach was developed by RISC designers. In effect, we are interested in evaluating the effectiveness of a specialized RISC processor for fuzzy information processing. As the first step, we measured the possible speed-up of a fuzzy inference program based on if-then rules by an introduction of specialized instructions, i.e., min and max instructions. The minimum and maximum operations are heavily used in fuzzy logic applications as fuzzy intersection and union. We performed measurements using a MIPS R3000 as a base micropro essor. The initial result is encouraging. We can achieve as high as a 2.5 increase in inference speed if the R3000 had min and max instructions. Also, they are useful for speeding up other fuzzy operations such as bounded product and bounded sum. The embedded processor's main task is to control some device or process. It usually runs a single or a embedded processer to create an embedded processor for fuzzy control is very effective. Table I shows the measured speed of the inference by a MIPS R3000 microprocessor, a fictitious MIPS R3000 microprocessor with min and max instructions, and a UNC/MCNC ASIC fuzzy inference chip. The software that used on microprocessors is a simulator of the ASIC chip. The first row is the computation time in seconds of 6000 inferences using 51 rules where each fuzzy set is represented by an array of 64 elements. The second row is the time required to perform a single inference. The last row is the fuzzy logical inferences per second (FLIPS) measured for ach device. There is a large gap in run time between the ASIC and software approaches even if we resort to a specialized fuzzy microprocessor. As for design time and cost, these two approaches represent two extremes. An ASIC approach is extremely expensive. It is, therefore, an important research topic to design a specialized computing architecture for fuzzy applications that falls between these two extremes both in run time and design time/cost.
