  • The risk of foreign body by small button-disc battery in children has been increasing because the batteries are widely used in electronic device and plaything and easily contact with children. Foreign body of mercury type button-disc battery, when lodged in the esophagus, leak a caustic solution which causes a rapid necrosis of esophageal mucosa. So it should be removed immediately when the radiologic diagnosis is made. We experienced a case of esophageal foreign body by mercuric disc battery in a 14-month-old male. This case will be discussed with literature review.

  • A novel battery model based on the manufacturer datasheet is proposed. According to this model, not only the steady state but also the dynamic charging performance of the Li-ion battery can be analyzed and evaluated. The major advantage of our model is that all the parameters can be directly obtained from the datasheet and no additional experiments are required. Moreover, the transition between charge and discharge stages was analyzed based on our model, and a novel Simulink module was built to predict the energy consumption of a battery-powered system. Experiments were carried out to verify the model accuracy. Although the new model was developed for the Li-ion battery, it is expected to be applicable to other batteries.

  • Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in many applications due to their high energy density, high efficiency, and excellent cycle ability. Once an unknown Li-ion battery is reusable, it is important to measure its lifetime and state of health. The most favorable measurement method is the cycle test, which is accurate but time- and capacity-consuming. In this study, instead of a cycle test, we present an empirical model based on the C-rate test to understand the state of health of the battery in a short time. As a result, we show that the partially accelerated charge/discharge condition of the Li-ion battery is highly effective for the degradation of battery capacity, even when half of the charge/discharge conditions are the same. This observation provides a measurable method for predicting battery reuse and future capacity degradation.

  • This paper presents a new lithium ion unit-cell and pack battery by using a new formulation ratio of material. The three types of formulation ratio for the unit-cell were used. The life cycle and basic properties of the lithium ion unit-cell$({\Psi}18{\times}65(mm))$ about one of them were acquired by the charge-discharge experiment. The nominal voltage, nominal capacity and cycle life output of the lithium ion unit-cell is respectively 3.7V, 2.4Ah, and above 500cycle. Pack type lithium ion battery has the size of $29.5{\times}73.5{\times}115(mm)$ and the weight of 300g. As the results, the weight and bulk of lithium ion battery used to a safety lamp were decreased to 1/4 and 1/7. In addition, the comparison of the new lithium ion battery and lead storge battery for confirming the effectiveness of the new lithium ion battery have been performed.

  • The major factors that make ZEV affordable are the range and cost. The development of advanced batteries such as Ni-MH battery can solve the problem partly; on the hand the battery management system is an efficient way. Ni-MH battery and battery ECU is a key component influencing ZEV performance, such as range, acceleration and hill-climbing capability. Because most problems related to battery such as short circuit, over-discharge and overcharge occur easily during operation, it is necessary to develop a dedicated battery ECU for HEV. This paper proposes a new SOC algorithm for the HEV based on the terminal voltage and current integration. And battery ECU was designed and analyzed. Also, the validity is confirmed through experiment.

  • Increasing global market of used electric vehicle (EV) battery encourages international firms to establish its subsidiary companies or business units specializing in battery recycling. Such kind of companies predominantly use closed loop supply chain (CLSC) for their operations of battery manufacturing and used battery recycling/reusing in global scale. However, EV battery recycling, as a relatively new industry, makes its global CLSC be exposed to various types of risks, which leads to inefficiency of supply processes and makes supply chains more complicated and vulnerable. Identifying, evaluating, and analyzing possible risks in CLSC has a great importance for optimization and increasing effectiveness for the global supply chain of used EV battery. Itwill assist to elaborate the efficient CLSC management and possible risk mitigation strategies to keep the global EV battery supply chain resilient and sustainable. This study aims to develop a conceptual framework for risk assessment in this new sector. Therefore, it will populate the framework with possible failure modes identified from various literature on EV battery recycling and closed loop supply chains so that future research can validate and utilize the conceptual framework.

  • The battery lifetime is one of the most important factors in product qualities of mobile devices such as mobile phones, MP3 players, PMP. It is used to be displayed by a 'battery bar' icon with uniformly divided three or four blocks. However, several manufacturers of mobile phones have assigned uneven time ratios to each battery block because they believe that it can make users feel more long in battery lifetime. In this study, two experiments were performed. The first is to verify the effects of the uneven time ratios in each battery block on users' cognitive awareness of battery lifetime. The second is to investigate whether the compatibility between battery displays and actual time ratios affects the users' time perceptions. The results show that as low battery bar is maintained for a long time, users tend to be aware of the battery lifetime shorter. On the contrary, maintaining full battery status longer does not affect the users' time perception. These results can be applied as the guidelines for determining proper time ratios in designing the battery bar indicator of mobile devices.

  • A navigation aid buoy is a kind of safety facility for maritime navigation with a purpose of leading the vessels for navigating, docking and sail off. An advanced rechargeable battery is required for stable power supply for navigation aid buoy as the high magnitude LED lamps, real time location/control for navigation aids and e-Navigation support systems with maritime climate observation equipments have recently been deployed. This study is focused on the lithium battery, especially lithium polymer battery which is believed to be safer than the other types of batteries. The lithium polymer battery reviewed in this study is designed with $LiFePO_4$-based cathode, which has superior safety features to the oxide-based cathodes. Besides, a 3.6kWh battery pack has been built with the above-mentioned unit cells for the purpose of comparative research with lead acid battery system.

  • When general statistical regression methods are applied to predict the battery remaining time of a mobile smart device, they yielded the poor accuracy of estimating battery remaining time as the deviations of battery usage time per battery level became larger. In order to improve the estimation accuracy of general statistical regression methods, a preprocessing task is required to refine the measured raw data with large deviations of battery usage time per battery level. In this paper, we propose a data preprocessing framework that preprocesses raw measured battery consumption data and converts them into refined battery consumption data. The numerical results obtained by experimenting the proposed data preprocessing framework confirmed that it yielded good performance in terms of accuracy of estimating battery remaining time under general statistical regression methods for given refined battery consumption data.

  • This paper proposes a battery model applicable to Autonomie environment. Also, a various of experiment is implemented for validation. The proposed battery model modifies Randles equivalent circuit and battery parameters are extracted from pulsed current tests. The parameters are two-dimensional function of current and SOC(State of Charge). The battery model is developed in the Matlab/Simulink and is implemented for NiMH Panasonic HHR650D and compared with pulsed current discharge curves. The simulation results validate the accuracy of the proposed model and the model is also tested by adding it on Autonomie for HEV application. Constant current charge/discharge, pulsed current test that can be used to extract battery parameter are performed and test results are used to build up the proposed battery model for Autonomie.
