  • Zirconium(Zr) nuclear fuel cladding tubes are made using a three-time pilgering and annealing process. In order to remove the oxidized layer and impurities on the surface of the tube, a pickling process is required. Zr is dissolved in HF and $HNO_3$ mixed acid during the process and pickling waste acid, including dissolved Zr, is totally discarded after being neutralized. In this study, the waste acid was recycled by adding $BaF_2$, which reacted with the Zr ion involved in the waste acid; $Ba_2ZrF_8$ was subsequently precipitated due to its low solubility in water. It is very difficult to extract zirconium from the as-recovered $Ba_2ZrF_8$ because its melting temperature is $1031^{\circ}C$. Hence, we tried to recover Zr using an electrowinning process with a low temperature molten salt compound that was fabricated by adding $ZrF_4$ to $Ba_2ZrF_8$ to decrease the melting point. Change of the Zr redox potential was observed using cyclic voltammetry; the voltage change of the cell was observed by polarization and chronopotentiometry. The structure of the electrodeposited Zr was analyzed and the electrodeposition characteristics were also evaluated.

  • Separation of Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) from sulfuric acid solutions was investigated by extraction with several acidic extractants such as Versatic acid, LIX 63, and Cyanex 301. From strong sulfuric acid solutions, the separation of Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) by Versatic acid and LIX 63 was not possible, while selective extraction of Hf(IV) over Zr(IV) was obtained with Cyanex 301. However, the extraction percentage of the two metals was much lower compared to that by D2EHPA. Mixing of TBP with Cyanex 301 and D2EHPA led to negative effect on the extraction and separation of the two metal ions. The difference in the extraction reaction and separation selectivity between HCl, $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$ media with each extractant was discussed.

  • A molten salt technology using $Li_2O$-LiCl has been extensively investigated to recover uranium metal from spent fuels in the field of nuclear energy. In the reduction process, it is an important point to maintain the concentration of $Li_2O$. $ZrO_2$ is inevitably contained in the spent fuels because Zr is one of the main components of fuel rod hulls. Therefore, the fate of $ZrO_2$ in $Li_2O$-LiCl molten salt has been investigated. It was found that $Li_2ZrO_3$ and $Li_4ZrO_4$ were formed chemically and electrochemically and they were not reduced to Zr. The recycling of $Li_2O$ is the key mechanism ruling the total reaction in the electrolytic reduction process. However, $ZrO_2$ will have a role as a $Li_2O$ sink.

  • Solvent extraction experiments have been conducted to separate Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) from chloride solutions by using LIX63 and Cyanex301. Zr and Hf were extracted by cation exchange reaction in the pH range from 1 to 4 by the extratants. Since the extraction percentage of the two metals was similar to each other, it was difficult to separate the two metals by using LIX63 or Cyanex301. Use of a mixture of LIX63/TBP or Cyanex301/TBP resulted in antagonism in our experimental ranges. Our data showed that there is some possibility of separating the two metals by the mixture of Cyanex301 and TBP because the extraction percentage of Hf decreased more rapidly than that of Zr as HCl concentration was decreased. The mixture of LIX63 and Cyanex301 had little effect on the separation of the two metals.

  • The effect of attrition scrubbing on the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from automobile catalytic converters has been investigated. Catalytic converters were first crushed into particles less than 2 mm and attrition scrubbed in the range of 60 min, and then they were sieved with several screens. The catalyst layer, $\gamma$-alumina, was dislodged from the surface of the supporting matrix into fine particles less than $45{\mu}m$ by attrition scrubbing. The fraction of fine particles less than $45{\mu}m$ increased as the residence time for attrition scrubbing increased. The composition of the fine fraction obtained at a residence time of 40 min was $CeO_2$ 19.3%, $ZrO_2$ 1.9% and PGMs 419 ppm. In the fine fraction, the recovery of y-alumina increased proportionally to the residence time. Simultaneously, the recovery rates of $CeO_2$, $ZrO_2$ and PGMs increased to 82.9%, 78.7% and 78.9%, respectively. The production of the fine fraction less than $45{\mu}m$ and the recovery of $\gamma$-alumina increased when the solid concentration and initial feed size increased. Therefore, the attrition scrubbing as the comminution and separation process was concerned to be effective for the recovery of catalyst layer from ceramic supporting matrix by physical impact and shearing action between particles in the scrubbing vessel.

  • In this study, the effect of scrap ratio on the mechanical properties of Zr alloys was studied. Oxygen content in the ingot cake increased rapidly with increasing fraction of scrap, which can be attributed to the surface oxide of scrap including small pieces of turning, chips, etc. Iron content did not increase much with the increasing addition of scrap, suggesting scrap materials was well reserved in the iron-free container. As-cast structure of Zr alloy with the scrap:sponge ratio displayed plate/or needle ${\alpha}$ phase and no appreciable change of the cast structure was observed with change of scrap fraction. The strength increases with increasing fraction of scrap, which can be attributed to the increase of oxygen content. The ductility decreased slightly with increase of scrap fraction. Dislocation-oxygen interaction is known to increase the strength at the expense of ductility. Ingot cake with intentionally added $Fe_2O_3$ exhibited the drastic decrease of the formability, even exhibited the brittle fracture behavior during rolling. The oxidation resistance, however, increased with the increase of scrap fraction because of high oxygen content, which may prevent more penetration and diffusion of oxygen into matrix.

  • A recovery process of Ruthenium from waste electronic scrap has been investigated by means of nitric acid leaching as a part of development for scrap pretreatment process to obtaining an optimum conditions for removal of removing various impurities such as Pb, Bi, Zn, Al, Bi, Ag Fe, Co, Zr, Si. From the experiments, 90% of Pb leached with 250 g/l pulp density in 10-15% nitric acid. Leaching behavior of Ba was also similar to that of the Pb, but those of other metal impurities, such as Zn, Al, Bi, Ag, Fe, Co, Zr, showed different behavior, in which the dissolution rate increased as the concentration of nitric acid in solution is increased up to the 10% $HNO_3$ in solution and then it was constant above 10% $HNO_3$ concentrations. Meanwhile, the dissolution of Ru in $HNO_3$ solution was less then 100ppm, and that the total content of Ru in undissolved residue scrap was resulted in an increment of 50%.

  • The recycling of coated cemented carbide scraps is becoming increasingly significant for the recovery of rare metals. However, coatings consisting of Group IV and V transition metal nitrides are one of the challenging factors in obtaining high-purity materials. We investigated the structural, elastic, and mechanical properties of Group IV and V transition-metal nitrides (TiN, VN, ZrN, NbN, HfN, and TaN) using first-principle calculations. Convergence tests were performed to obtain reliable calculated results. The equilibrium structures of the nitrides were in good agreement with those of a previous study, indicating the reliability of the data. Group IV transition metal nitrides show a higher covalent bonding nature. Thus, they exhibit a higher degree of brittleness than that of Group V transition metal nitrides. In contrast, Group V transition metal nitrides show weaker resistance to shear loading and more ductile behavior than Group IV transition metal nitrides because of the metallic bonds characterized by valence electron concentration. The results of the crystal orbital Hamilton population analysis showed good agreement with the shear resistance tendencies of all transition metal nitrides.
