Effects of TiN/Ti multilayer coating on the Ti-30Ta-xZr alloy surface were studied by using various experiments. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr (5, 10 and 15 wt%) were melted 10 times to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace. And then samples were homogenized for 24 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were prepared for TiN/Ti coating by cutting and polishing. The prepared specimens were coated with TiN/Ti multilayers by using DC magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface and coated layer were carried out by field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM), EDX, and X-ray diffractometer(XRD). From the microstructure and XRD analysis of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys, The equiaxed structure was changed to needle-like structure with increasing Zr content. And $\alpha$-peak and elastic modulus increased as Zr content increased. The $\alpha$ and $\beta$ phase predominantly were found in the specimen containing high Zr content. According to the analysis of TiN/Ti coating layer, the surface defects and structures of Ti-30Ta-xZr were covered with TiN/Ti coating layer and surface roughness decreased.
The protection effect of a $ZrO_2$ coating layer on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film was characterized. A wide and smooth $LiCoO_2$ thin film offers sufficient opportunity for careful observation of the reaction at the interface between cathode (coated and uncoated) and electrolyte. The formation of a $ZrO_2$ coating on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film was confirmed by secondary ion mass spectrometry. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize the surface morphologies of coated and uncoated films before and after cycling. A $ZrO_2$-coated $LiCoO_2$ film showed a higher discharge capacity and rate capability than an uncoated film. This may be associated with a surface protection effect of the coating. The surface of a pristine film was damaged during cycling, whereas the coated film maintained a relatively clear surface under the same measurement conditions. This result clearly demonstrates the protection effect of a $ZrO_2$ coating on a $LiCoO_2$ thin film.
In this study, a $Li_2ZrO_3$ coated $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ (NCA) cathode was applied to an all-solid-state cell employing a sulfide-based solid electrolyte. Sulfide-based solid electrolytes are preferable for all-solid-state cells because of their high ionic conductivity and good softness and elasticity. However, sulfides are very reactive with oxide cathodes, and this reduces the stability of the cathode/electrolyte interface of all-solid-state cells. $Li_2ZrO_3$ is expected to be a suitable coating material for the cathode because it can suppress the undesirable reactions at the cathode/sulfide electrolyte interface because of its good stability and high ionic conductivity. Cells employing $Li_2ZrO_3$ coated NCA showed superior capacity to those employing pristine NCA. Analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy confirmed that the $Li_2ZrO_3$ coating layer suppresses the propagation of S and P into the cathode and the reaction between the cathode and the sulfide solid electrolyte. These results show that $Li_2ZrO_3$ coating is promising for reducing undesirable side reactions at the cathode/electrolyte interface of all-solid-state-cells.
Thermal barrier coatings(TBCs) are being applied in many industrial fields such as thermal power generation, aviation and seasonal fields. $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) thermal spray coating powders are commercially used as thermal-barrier coating materials to protect against oxidation and corrosion of heat-resistant alloys at elevated temperatures. Currently, $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) thermal-spray powder is made using the industrial co-precipitation process, which is very complex and requires a lot of time. In this study, orthorhombic $ZrO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ powders were fabricated by mechanical mixing, which is more economical than the co-precipitation process. A tetragonal, yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) coating-layer was produced by plasma spraying, using orthorhombic $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) powder. Our experimental results indicate that $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) mixed powder can be used economically in industry because it is no longer necessary to make this powder by liquid and gas-phase methods.
Zr-Al-N coatings were synthesized by the hybrid coating system combining arc ion plating and DC magnetron sputtering from a Zr and an Al target in argon-nitrogen atmosphere, respectively. By changing the power applied on the Al cathodes, the Zr-Al-N coatings with various Al contents were deposited. The microstructure and chemical compositions of the Zr-Al-N coatings were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). With increasing of Al content in the coatings, the solid solution (Zr, Al)N crystallites were observed in the Zr-Al-N coatings. The nanohardness of the Zr-Al-N coatings exhibited a maximum value of 42 GPa for the Zr-Al (7.9 at.%)-N, and decreased with further increase in Al content in the coatings. The oxidation and corrosion behavior of the Zr-Al-N coatings revealed better properties compared than those of ZrN coatings due to the formation of a solid solution.
$ZrO_2$ and Al-Zr composite oxide film was prepared by vacuum assisted sol-gel dip coating method and anodizing. $ZrO_2$ films annealed above $400^{\circ}C$ have tetragonal structure. $ZrO_2$ layers inside etch pits were successfully coated from the $ZrO_2$ sol. The double layer structures of samples were obtained after being anodized at 100 V to 600 V. From the TEM images, it was found that the outer layer was $Al_2O_3$, the inner layer was multi-layer of $ZrO_2$, Al-Zr composite oxide and Al hydrate. The capacitance of $ZrO_2$ coated foil exhibited about 28.3% higher than that of non-coating foil after being anodized at 100 V. The high capacitance of $ZrO_2$ coated foils anodized at 100 V can be attributed to the relatively high percentage of inner layer in total thickness. The electrical properties, such as withstanding voltage and leakage current of coated and non-coated Al foils showed similar values. From the results, $ZrO_2$ and Al-Zr composite oxide is promising to be used as the partial dielectric of high voltage capacitor to increase the capacitance.
Within the frame of the EMPIrE test, four monolithic mini-plates were irradiated in the ATR reactor. In two of them, the monolithic U(Mo) foil had been PVD-coated with Zr before the plate manufacturing. Extensive microstructural characterizations were performed on a fresh archive mini-plate, using Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) combined with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) and Focused Ion Beam (FIB)/Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) with nano EDS. A particular attention was paid to the examination of the U(Mo) foil, the PVD coating, the cladding/Zr and Zr/U(Mo) interfaces. The Zr coating has a thickness around 15 ㎛. It has a columnar microstructure and appears dense. The cohesion of the cladding/Zr and Zr/U(Mo) interfaces seems to be satisfactory. An almost continuous layer with a thickness of the order of 100-300 nm is present at the cladding/Zr interface and corresponds to an oxidized part of the Zr coating. At the Zr/U(Mo) interface, a thin discontinuous layer is observed. It could correspond to locally oxidized U(Mo). This work provides a basis for interpreting the results of characterizations on EMPIrE irradiated plates.
An inert gas atomized NiTiZrSiSn bulk metallic glass feedstock was sprayed onto the copper plate using vacuum plasma spraying process. In order to change the in-flight particle energy, that is, thermal energy, the hydrogen gas flow rate in plasma gas mixture was increased at the constant flow rate of argon gas. Coating and single pass spraying bead were produced with the least feeding rate. Regardless of the plasma gas composition, fully melted through unmelted particle could be observed on the overlay coating. However, the frequency of the unmelted particle number density was increased with the decrease of the hydrogen gas flow rate. The amorphous phase fraction within coating was also affected by the number density of the unmelted particle.
The dental orthodontic bracket requires good mechanical properties, such as elastic strength and frictional resistance, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of TiN and ZrN coating on corrosion resistance of orthodontic brackets using various electrochemical methods. Brackets manufactured by Ormco Co. were used, respectively, for experiment. Ion plating was carried out for coatings of bracket using Ti and Zr coating materials with nitrogen gas. Ion plated surface of each specimen was observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), energy dispersive Xray spectroscopy(EDS) and electrochemical tester. The corrosion potential of the TiN and ZrN coated bracket was comparatively high. The current density of TiN and ZrN coated bracket was smaller than that of non-coated bracket in 0.9% NaCl solution. Pit nucleated at angle of bracket slot.
Zr-O ($Zr-ZrO_2$) cermets solar selective coatings with a double cermets layer film structure were prepared using a DC (direct current) magnetron sputtering method. The typical film structure from surface to bottom substrate were an $Al_2O_3$ anti-reflection layer on a double Zr-O cermets layer on an Al metal infrared reflection layer. Optical properties of optimized Zr-O cermets solar selective coating had an absorptance of ${\alpha}\;=\;0.95$ and thermal omittance of ${\epsilon}\;=\;0.10\;(100^{\circ}C)$. The absorbing layer of Zr-O cermets coatings on glass and silicon substrate was identified as being amorphous by using XRD. AFM showed that ZF-O cermets layers were very smooth and their surface roughness were approximately $0.1{\sim}0.2 nm$. The chemical analysis of the cermets coatings were determined by using XPS. Chemical shift of photoelectron binding energy was occurred due to the change of Zr-O cermets coating structure deposited with increase in oxygen flow rate. The result of thermal stability test showed that the Zr-O cermets solar selective coating was stable for use at temperature below $350^{\circ}C$.
