  • This paper presents the optimum initial design containing the first and third order properties of the three-group zoom system using lens modules, and the real lens design of the system. The optimum initial design with focal length range of 4.3 mm to 8.6 mm is derived by assigning appropriate first and third order quantities to each module along with the specific constraints required for the system. An initial real lens selected for each group has been designed to match its focal length and the first orders into those of the each lens modules, and then combined to establish an actual zoom system by adjusting the air space between the groups at all zoom positions. The combination of the separately designed groups results in a system which satisfies the first order properties of the zoom system composed of the original lens modules. As a result, by residual aberration correction, we could obtain a zoom system useful in compact digital zoom cameras and mobile phone cameras employing the rear focus method.

  • The number of lens groups in modern zoom camera systems is increased above that of conventional systems in order to improve the speed of the auto focus with the high quality image. As a result, it is difficult to calculate zoom loci using the conventional analytic method, and even the recent one-step advanced numerical calculation method is not optimal because of the time-consuming problem generated by the iteration method. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, we suggest a new unified analytic method for zoom lens loci with finite object distance including infinite object distance. This method is induced by systematically analyzing various distances between the object and other groups including the first lens group, for various situations corresponding to zooming equations of the finite lens systems after using a spline interpolation for each lens group. And we confirm the justification of the new method by using various zoom lens examples. By using this method, we can easily and quickly obtain the zoom lens loci not only without any calculation process of iteration but also without any limit on the group number and the object distance in every zoom lens system.

  • We propose an adaptive zoom motion estimation method where a picture is divided into two areas based on the distance information with a depth camera : the one is object area and the other is background area. In the proposed method, the zoom motion is only applied to the object area except the background area. Further, the block size of motion estimation for the object area is set to smaller than that of background area. This adaptive zoom motion estimation method can be reduced at the complexity of motion estimation and can be improved at the motion estimation performance by reducing the block size of the object area in comparison with the conventional zoom motion estimation method. Based on the simulation results, the proposed method is compared with the conventional methods in terms of motion estimation accuracy and computational complexity.

  • We suggest the dynamic stroke generation algorithm that provides frame-to-frame coherence in 3D non-photorealistic animations. We use 3D particle system to eliminate the visual popping effect in the animated scene. Since we have located particles on the 3D object's surface, the coherence is maintained when the object or the camera is moving in the scene. Also, this algorithm maintains the coherence when camera is zooming in/out. However, the brush strokes on the surface also zoom in/out. This result(too large or too small brush strokes) can not represent hand-crafted brush strokes. To remove this problem, we suggest stroke generation algorithm that dynamically maintains the number of brush stroke and its size during camera zoom in/out.

  • This paper presents the optimum initial design containing the first and third order properties of the four-group video camera zoom system using lens modules, and its real lens design. The optimum initial design with focal length range of 6.1693 to 58.4065 mm is derived by assigning appropriate first order quantities and third order aberrations to each module along with the specific constraints required for optimization. By scaling the focal length of each lens group, an initial real lens selected for each group has been designed to match its focal length into that of the each lens module, and then combined to establish an actual zoom system by adjusting the air space between the groups at all zoom positions. The combination of the separately designed groups results in a system which satisfies the first order properties of the zoom system consisting of original lens modules. • Speed, accuracy and smoothness are the important properties of pan-tilt camera. In the case of a high ratio zoom lens system, low vibration characteristic is a crucial point in driving pan-tilt mechanism. In this paper, a novel micro-stepping controller with a function of reducing vibration was designed using field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) technology for high zoom ratio pan-tilt camera. The proposed variable reference current (VRC) control scheme reduces vibration decently and optimizing coil current in order to prevent the step motor from occurring missing steps. By employing VRC control scheme, the vibration in low speed could be significantly minimized. The proposed controller can also make very high speed of 378kpps micro-step driving, and increase maximum acceleration in motion profiles.

  • The stereoscopic camera based on the image formation principle on human eyes and the brain is designed and fabricated by using a CCD and two zoom lenses. As two zoom lenses are separated as 65 mm of the human ocular distance with the wide angle of view of $50^{\circ}$ and the variable convergence angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $16^{\circ}$, the camera can be operated by the similar binocular parallax as human eyes. In order to take the dynamic stereoscopic picture, a shutter blade for the selection of the left and right images in turns, an X-cube image combiner fur the composition of these two images through the blade, and a CCD with 60 frames per second are used.

  • Even though a dual lens stereoscopic camera allows for convenient stereoscopic photography, the necessity for the research comes up, since the dual lens stereoscopic camera can cause visual discomfort during zoom-in due to the fixed convergence point. We propose a method based on which a convergence point can be adjusted to prevent visual discomfort during zoom-in for a dual lens stereoscopic camera. First, the relational model is classified into nine kinds and defined, depending on locations of focus, object, and convergence point. And then, the method to minimize visual discomfort is suggested by adjusting convergence point on the given model. We also implement the suggested methods with anaglyph computer graphic and demonstrate the superiority of them.

  • It is known that sewer problems are the major causes of road cave-in. The objective of this study is to analyze the risk of road cave-in due to storm sewer laterals. We investigated 174 storm sewer laterals using a zoom camera at O-dong area in Seoul. The causes of road cave-in were classified into five cases: breakage of rigid pipe, deformation of flexible pipe, out of pipeline alignment, changing pipe material or changing pipe diameter, and a poor linkage between lateral and sewer. In addition, all defects were sorted into five grades based on the severity rating at storm sewer laterals. In this study, the most fragile pipe materials were found to be concrete pipe and polyethylene pipe, which recorded 2.3 and 1.69 defect rates. With regard to the causes of road cave-in, deformation of flexible pipe has a large influence on road cave-in at present. On a long-term basis, the two causes, out of pipeline alignment and a poor linkage between lateral and sewer, could have more influence on road cave-in.
