  • The spinel/cubic stabilized zirconia composites were fabricated via, The reaction sintering of monoclinic zirco-nia(baddeleyite) added with MgAl powder. During heating Mg and Al were oxidizedfirst and subsequently the oxides formed spinel (MgAl2O4) and finally remained MgO stabilized the zirconia, Because the oxides formed during the oxidation process would have very fine grain size (order of submicron) mainly due to the effects of attrition milling the reaction sintering was more effective in densification and improvement of strength and fracture toughness than conventional sintering with direct addition of MgO. The sintering behavior phase transformation during firing and mechanical properties of sintered body were investigated with emphasis on the relations between spinel formation due to MgAl addition and sintering and mechanical properties.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of one zirconia-based ceramic used with various veneering ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia core material (Katana) and five veneering ceramics (Cerabien ZR; CZR, Lava Ceram; LV, Cercon Ceram Kiss; CC, IPS e.max Ceram; EM and VITA VM9; VT) were selected. Using the powder/liquid layering technique, bilayered disk specimens (diameter: 12.50 mm, thickness: 1.50 mm) were prepared to follow ISO standard 6872:2008 into five groups according to veneering ceramics as follows; Katana zirconia veneering with CZR (K/CZR), Katana zirconia veneering with LV (K/LV), Katana zirconia veneering with CC (K/CC), Katana zirconia veneering with EM (K/EM) and Katana zirconia veneering with VT (K/VT). After 20,000 thermocycling, load tests were conducted using a universal testing machine (Instron). The BFS were calculated and analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (${\alpha}$=0.05). The Weibull analysis was performed for reliability of strength. The mode of fracture and fractured surface were observed by SEM. RESULTS. It showed that K/CC had significantly the highest BFS, followed by K/LV. BFS of K/CZR, K/EM and K/VT were not significantly different from each other, but were significantly lower than the other two groups. Weibull distribution reported the same trend of reliability as the BFS results. CONCLUSION. From the result of this study, the BFS of the bilayered zirconia/veneer composite did not only depend on the Young's modulus value of the materials. Further studies regarding interfacial strength and sintering factors are necessary to achieve the optimal strength.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic study was to measure the degree of conversion (DC) of dual-cured resin cements light-irradiated through zirconia ceramic disks with different thicknesses using various light-curing methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia ceramic disks (KT12) with three different thicknesses (1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mm) were prepared. The light transmittance of the disks was measured using ultraviolet visible near-infrared spectroscopy. Four different light-curing protocols were used by combining two curing light modes (Elipar TriLight (standard mode) and bluephase G2 (high power mode)) with light-exposure times of 40 and 120 seconds. The DCs of the two dual-cured resin cements (Duo-Link and Panavia F2.0) light-irradiated through the disks was analyzed at three time intervals (3, 7, and 10 minutes) by FTIR spectroscopy. The data was analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (${\alpha}$=.05).Two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test were used to analyze the 10 minute DC results. RESULTS. The 1.0 mm thick disk exhibited low light transmittance (<25%), and the transmittance decreased considerably with increasing disk thickness. All groups exhibited significantly higher 10 minute DC values than the 3 or 7 minute values (P<.05), but some exceptions were observed in Duo-Link. Two-way ANOVA revealed that the influence of the zirconia disk thickness on the 10 minute DC was dependent on the light-curing methods (P<.001). This finding was still valid even at 4.0 mm thickness, where substantial light attenuation took place. CONCLUSION. The curing of the dual-cured resin cements was affected significantly by the light-curing technique, even though the additional chemical polymerization mechanism worked effectively.

  • PURPOSE. To evaluate and compare the effect of different materials and techniques on the shear bond strength of veneering ceramic materials to zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 136 sintered zirconia cubes were prepared and randomly divided into four study groups according to corresponding methods of surface treatment and materials: GLN (grinding followed by laser scanning using Noritake Cerabien ZR), SLN (sandblasting followed by laser scanning using Noritake Cerabien ZR), GLV (grinding followed by laser scanning using VITA VM 9), and SLV (sandblasting followed by laser scanning using VITA VM 9). Spraying technique was performed to coat the core. Profilometer, SEM, XRD, EDS, universal testing machine, and stereomicroscope were used to record surface roughness Ra, surface morphology, phase transformation, elemental compositions, shear bond strength SBS values, and failure types, respectively. Specimens were investigated in unaged (not immersed in artificial saliva) and aged (stored in artificial saliva for a month) conditions to evaluate SBS values. RESULTS. Grinding and GLN as first and second surface treatments provided satisfactory Ra values in both conditions ($1.05{\pm}0.24{\mu}m$, $1.30{\pm}0.21{\mu}m$) compared to sandblasting and other groups (P<.05). The group GLN showed the highest SBS values in both conditions ($30.97{\pm}3.12MPa$, $29.09{\pm}4.17MPa$), while group SLV recorded the lowest ($23.96{\pm}3.60MPa$, $22.95{\pm}3.68Mpa$) (P<.05). Sandblasting showed phase transformation from t-m. Mixed failure type was the commonest among all groups. CONCLUSION. GLN showed to be a reliable method which provided satisfactory bond strength between the veneer ceramic and zirconia. This method might preserve the integrity of fixed dental crowns.

  • Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coatings are fabricated via suspension plasma spray (SPS) for thermal barrier applications. Three different suspension sets are prepared by using a planetary mill as well as ball mill in order to examine the effect of starting suspension on the phase evolution and the microstructure of SPS prepared coatings. In the case of planetary-milled commercial YSZ powder, a deposited thick coating turns out to have a dense, vertically-cracked microstructure. In addition, a dense YSZ coating with fully developed phase can be obtained via suspension plasma spray with suspension from planetary-milled mixture of $Y_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$.

  • This study examined the shear bond strength between the zirconia core and pressed lithium disilicate veneering ceramics. The Schmitz-Schulmeyer test method was used to investigate the core-veneer shear bond strength of industrially manufactured zirconia core ceramic (Zirtooth, HASS, Gangneung, Korea) and pressed veneer ceramic (IPS e.max Zirpress, Vita PM9, GC Initial IQ, HASS Rosetta SM) (N=40). Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (a=0.05). The fractured surfaces of the specimens were examined to determine the failure pattern using a digital microscope. The mean ± SD shear bond strength in MPa were 16.69±3.11, 14.21±3.63, 11.17±2.92, and 27.90±5.71 for IPS e.max Zirpress, VITA PM9, GC Initial IQ, and HASS Rosetta SM, respectively. The average shear bond strength was largest for HASS Rosetta SM, followed by IPS e.max Zirpress, Vita PM9, and GC Initial IQ(p<0.05). The digital microscopy examination of the fracture surface showed adhesive and cohesive failure in pressed lithium disilicate veneering ceramics. The use of lithium disilicate veneer ceramic produced a significantly higher shear bond strength.

  • Purpose: The present study was performed to investigate the effect of abutment inclined angle on the marginal fit of zirconia all-ceramic crown. Methods: The Ti abutments with 3 different inclined angle($2^{\circ}$, $4^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$) were fabricated. The zirconia copings were fabricated for each abutment by using dental CAD/CAM system. The manufactured zirconia copings were duplicated through silicone replica technique, and a replicated specimen was sectioned in the center of bucco-lingual and mesio-distal axial to measure the marginal fit by using a stereo microscope. The results were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with SPSS 22.0 for Windows(${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: On the bucco-lingual axial, marginal fit was the RL3($41.5{\pm}3.4{\mu}m$), RL2($44.3{\pm}4.3{\mu}m$) and RL1($47.5{\pm}5.7{\mu}m$), respectively. On the mesio-distal axial, marginal fit was the RL3($41.1{\pm}3.7{\mu}m$), RL2($45.7{\pm}5.3{\mu}m$) and RL1($46.2{\pm}4.5{\mu}m$), respectively. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference between groups for marginal fit(p<0.05). Conclusion: For marginal fit of the abutments inclined angle, RL3 specimen was superior. The abutment inclined angle had influence on marginal fit of the zirconia copings. The marginal fit of each group were within clinically acceptable range.
