  • In this paper, we have proposed a new dimmable magnetic ballast for HID(High Intensity Discharge) lamps consisted of AC switches to variate inductance value by using Silicon Controlled Rectifiers and the isolated zero current detector on inductor. Conventional dimming ballast has used relays or Solid State Relays in AC switches. However, a relay is difficult to zero current switching, because it has long operating time(10[ms]), and price competitiveness of SSR is very low. The proposed AC switches are suitable to switch at zero inductor current and it is accurately detected by using a opto-coupler. SCR is cheaper than SSR, and it is suitable to switch at zero inductor current because SCR is automatically turned off under holding current at no gate signal. Operating principles, simulation results and experimental results of the proposed ballast are described.

  • We study a free boundary problem satisfying Bernoulli type boundary condition along which the gradient of a piecewise harmonic solution jumps zero to a given constant value. In such problem, the free boundary splits the domain into two regions, the zero set and the harmonic region. Our main interest is to identify the global shape and the location of the zero set. In this paper, we find the lower and the upper bound of the zero set. In a convex domain, easier estimation of the upper bound and faster disk test technique are given to find a rough shape of the zero set. Also a simple proof on the convexity of zero set is given for a connected zero set in a convex domain.

  • We introduce the concept of w-zero-divisor (w-ZD) rings and study its related rings. In particular it is shown that an integral domain R is an SM domain if and only if R is a w-locally Noetherian w-ZD ring and that a commutative ring R is w-Noetherian if and only if the polynomial ring in one indeterminate R[X] is a w-ZD ring. Finally we characterize universally zero divisor rings in terms of w-ZD modules.

  • Zero-Cross Detector makes pilot signal to control the power to CEDM(Control Element Drive Mechanism). Existing Zero-Cross Detectors has had a problem which can cause unexpected reactor trip resulted from fluctuating frequency of input signal coming from M/G Set. The existing Zero-Cross Detector can't work properly when power frequency is varying because it was designed to work under stable M/G Set operation, and produces wrong pilot signal and output voltage. In this report the Zero-Cross Detector is improved to resolve voltage fluctuating problem by using new devices such as digital noise filtering circuit, variable cycle compensator and alarm circuit. And through the performance verification it shows that new circuit is better than old one. If suggested detector is applied to plant, it is possible to use it under House Load Operation because stable voltage can be generated by new Zero-Cross Detector.

  • The output of the encoder is a digital pulse, which is also easy to be connected to a digital controller. There are various angular velocity detecting methods of M, T, and M/T. Each of them has its own properties. There is a common limitation that the angular velocity detection period is strongly dependent on the destination velocity magnitude in case of ultimate low range. They have ultimately long detection period or cannot even detect angular velocity at near zero velocity. This paper proposes a zero velocity detectable sensor algorithm with the dual encoder system. The sensor algorithm is able to keep detection period moderately at near zero velocity and even detect zero velocity within nominal period. It is useful for detecting velocity in case of changing rotational direction at which there occurs zero velocity. In this paper, various experimental results are shown for the algorithm validity.

  • A new primary-side-assisted zero-voltage and zero-current switching full bridge DC-DC converter with transformer isolation is proposed. The auxiliary circuit adopted to assist ZCS for the leading leg is composed of only one small transformer and two diodes. It has a simple and robust structure, and load current control capability even in short circuit conditions. Possibility of magnetic saturation due to asymmetricity of circuits or transient phenomena is greatly reduced, which is a very attractive feature in DC/DC converters with transformer isolation. The power rating of the auxiliary transformer is about 10% of that of the main transformer. Operation of a 12.5KW prototype designed for welding application was verified by experiments.

  • The Vietnamese language has a specific property related to the zero in the name-number system. This study was conducted to examine the impact of linguistic differences and of the zero's position in a number on a transcoding task (verbal number into Arabic number). Vietnamese children and French-speaking Belgian children, from grades 3 to 6, participated in the study. The success rate and the type of errors they made varied, depending on their grade and language. At Grade 4, Vietnamese children showed performances equivalent to Grade 6 Belgian children. Our results confirmed the support provided by language to the understanding and performances in a transcoding task. Results also showed that a syntactic zero is easier to manipulate than a lexical zero for Vietnamese children. The relative influence of language and the source of errors are discussed.

  • An inertial navigation system for pedestrian position tracking is proposed, where the position is computed using inertial sensors mounted on shoes. Inertial navigation system(INS) errors increase with time due to inertial sensor errors, and therefore it needs to reset errors frequently. During normal walking, there is an almost periodic zero velocity instance when a foot touches the floor. Using this fact, estimation errors are reduced and this method is called the zero velocity updating algorithm. When implementing this zero velocity updating algorithm, it is important to know when is the zero velocity interval. The gait states are modeled as a Markov process and each state is estimated using the hidden Markov model smoother. With this gait estimation, the zero or nearly zero velocity interval is more accurately estimated, which helps to reduce the position estimation error.

  • The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is an effective protection device for wind turbine generator based on doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) operated under the unbalanced voltage dip conditions. The compensating voltages of DVR depend on the voltage dips and on the influence of the zero sequence components. If the $Y_0/{\Delta}$ step-up transformers are used, there are no zero sequence components on the DFIG side. However, if the $Y_0/Y_0$ step-up transformers are used, the zero sequence components will appear during faults. The zero sequence components result in the high insulation costs and the asymmetric of the terminal voltages. This paper proposes a method for controlling zero sequence components in DVR to protect DFIG under unbalanced voltage dips. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • Teachers and students' knowledge of zero was investigated through data collected from 16 preservice secondary mathematics teachers and 20 gifted secondary school students. Results showed that these teachers and students had an inadequate knowledge about zero. They exhibited a reluctance to accept zero as an attribute for classification, confusion as to whether or not zero is a number, and stable patterns of computational error. Although leachers and researchers have long recognized the value of analyzing student errors for diagnosis and remediation, students have not been encouraged to take advantage of errors as learning opportunities in mathematics instruction. The article suggests using errors as springboards for inquiry in action, discusses its potential contributions to mathematics instruction by analyzing students and preservice teachers errors related to zero.
