  • A CubeSat platform has become a popular choice due to inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and low launch cost. However, it requires more power-efficient and higher-data rate downlink capability for space applications related to remote sensing. In addition, the platform is limited by the size, weight and power (SWaP) constraints as well as the regulatory issue of licensing the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The requirements and limitations have put optical communications on promising alternatives to RF communications for a CubeSat platform, owing to the power efficiency and high data rate as well as the license free spectrum. In this study, we analyzed the performance of optical downlink communications compatible with CubeSat platforms in terms of data rate, bit error rate (BER) and outage probability. Mathematical models of BER and outage probability were derived based on not only the log-normal model of atmospheric turbulence but also a transmitter with a finite extinction ratio. Given the fixed slot width, the optimal guard time and modulation orders were chosen to achieve the target data rate. And the two performance metrics, BER and outage data rate, were analyzed and discussed with respect to beam divergence angle, scintillation index and zenith angle.

  • This paper presents the jamming effect on the L5 band of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) by analyzing real data collected via measurement campaigns in Korea region. In fact, the L5 band is one of the dedicated bands for various satellite navigation systems such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Galileo, BeiDou (BDS), and Quasi Zenith Satellite System (QZSS). And this band is also allocated along with various systems used for aeronautical radio navigation systems (ARNS). Among ARNS, the Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) and the Tactical Air Navigation System (TACAN) are systems that transmit and receive strong power pulse signals, which may cause unintentional jamming in the reception of GNSS signals. In this paper, signals in the main lobe of GPS L5, Galileo E5a, BDS B2a, and QZSS L5 are collected in Korean region to confirm whether the jamming effect exists in the band. And then, the pulse blanking technique, which is a simple signal processing technique capable of responding to pulsed jamming, is applied to analyze the jamming effect of DME/TACAN on the L5 band.

  • Trade along the Silk Routes reached its zenith during the Pax Mongolica, a period of relative stability in Eurasia that was created by the Mongol empire in the 13th and 14th centuries. It is generally believed that the Silk Routes declined after the disintegration of the Mongol empire in the second half of the 14th century and that they fell into disuse after the 1453 Ottoman conquest of Constantinople as the Europeans sought alternative maritime routes to Asia. This paper examines the aftermath of the Mongol-era overland and maritime Silk Routes from a non-Eurocentric perspective. Seen from the standpoint of various successors to the Mongol empire, such as the Timurid empire, the Mughal empire, the Uzbek khanate, the Ottoman empire, Manchu Qing, and Russia, the overland and maritime Silk Routes did not really collapse or sharply decline during the post-Mongol period. These Mongol successor states maintained close and thriving overland trade relations with each other or some important maritime trade relations with Southeast Asia. It may be argued that the Silk Routes in the post-Mongol world functioned rather independently of European seaborne commerce.

  • Target detection (TD) is a research hotspot in the field of hyperspectral imaging (HSI). Traditional TD methods often mine targets from HSIs under a single imaging condition, without considering the influence of imaging conditions. In fact, the spectra of ground objects in HSIs are uncertain and affected by the imaging conditions (weather, atmospheric, light, time, and other angle conditions including zenith angle). Hyperspectral data changes under different imaging conditions. Therefore, the detection result for a single imaging condition cannot accurately reflect the effectiveness of the detection method used. It is necessary to analyze the performance of various detection methods under different imaging conditions, to find a more applicable detection method. In this paper, we study the performance of TD methods under various land-based imaging conditions. We first summarize classical TD methods and evaluation methods. Then, the detection effects under various imaging conditions are analyzed. Finally, the concepts of the stability coefficient (SC) and effective area under the curve (EAUC) are proposed to comprehensively evaluate the applicability of detection methods under land-based imaging conditions, in terms of both detection accuracy and stability. This is conducive to our selection of detection methods with better applicability in land-based contexts, to improve detection accuracy and stability.

  • Various structures of navigation messages in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals can be categorized into fixed, packetized, and mixed types, each with different broadcast intervals and sequences. In the fixed format, the broadcast intervals and sequences of navigation messages of Global Positioning System (GPS) L1 C/A and BDS B1I are strictly defined in the Interface Control Document (ICD). Navigation messages of GPS L2C, L5, Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) L2C, L5, and BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) B1C are in a packetized format, and their broadcast sequence is not explicitly specified in the ICD; only the maximum broadcast intervals are described. In the mixed format, signals such as GPS L1C, QZSS L1 C/A, L1C, and BDS B2a exhibit both fixed and packetized patterns. Sequences of certain parts of the message are not defined. Therefore, in this study, experimental-based investigations were additionally conducted alongside an ICD investigation to analyze the current broadcast intervals and sequences of GNSS navigation messages.

  • The Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution (BRD) effect is critical to interpret the surface information using remotely sensed data. This effect was caused by geometric relationship between sensor, target and solar that is inevitable effect for data of optical sensor. To remove the BRD effect, semi-empirical BRDF models are widely used. It is faster to calculate than physical models and demanded less observation than empirical models. In this study, Ross-Li kernel and Roujean kernel were used respectively in National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) that are used to compare each other. The semi-empirical model consists of three parts which are isotropic, geometric and volumetric scattering. Each part contained physical kernel and empirical coefficients that were calculated by statistical method. Red and NIR channel of SPOT/VEGETATION product were used to compute Nadir BRDF Adjusted Reflectance (NBAR) over East Asia area from January 2009 to December 2009. S1 product was provided by VITO that was conducted atmospheric correction using Simplified Method of Atmospheric Correction (SMAC). NBAR was calculated using corrected reflectance of red and NIR. Previous study has revealed that Roujean geometric kernel had unphysical values in large zenith angles. We extracted empirical coefficients in three parts and normalized reflectance to compare both BRDF models. Two points located forest in Korea peninsular and bare land in Gobi desert were selected for comparison. As results of time series analysis, both models showed similar reflectance change pattern and reasonable values. Whereas in case of empirical coefficients comparison, different changes pattern of values were showed in isotropic coefficients.

  • Solar energy is calculated using high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM). In focus on Seoul metropolitan area, correction coefficients of direct and diffuse solar energy with the topographic effect are calculated from DEM with 1720, 900, 450, 90 and 30 spatial resolutions ($m{\times}m$), respectively. The solar energy on the real surface with high-resolution is corrected using by the correction coefficients with topographic effect from the solar energy on horizontal surface with lower resolution. Consequently, the solar energy on the real surface is more detailed distribution than those of horizontal surface. In particular, the topographic effect in the winter is larger than summer because of larger solar zenith angle in winter. In Seoul metropolitan area, the monthly mean topographic effects are more than 200% in winter and within 40% in summer. And annual topographic effects are negative role with more than -60% and positive role with below 40%, respectively. As a result, topographic effect on real surface is not a negligible factor when calculating and analyzing solar energy using regional and global models.

  • The monthly-mean irradiance of ultra violet (UV)-B and UV-A observed from 2005 to 2014 and 2012 to 2014, respectively, at noon in Gosan, Jeju, South Korea are analyzed. We compare cloudiness, total ozone, visibility, and relative humidity with an emphasis on the four months from May to August (MJJA), which shows the largest UV radiation. While the incoming UV-B radiation at the top of the atmosphere in Gosan is the largest in June due to the small solar zenith angle, the observed surface UV-B shows an unexpected smaller value in June than those in May, July or August. In June, the meteorological conditions affecting Gosan are completely dominated by cloudiness and thus, frequent overcast seems to determine the minimum UV-B. Another important UV-determining factor is the total ozone, which exhibits a monotonic decrease during MJJA without agreeing to the characteristic feature of UV. The ratio of UV-B to UV-A is not generally influenced by cloudiness. Thus, the ratio is a useful indicator of atmospheric turbidity showing larger values for increasing visibility, except in June. A simple model has been used to estimate surface UV by using the observed ozone and visibility in the cloudless condition. The result shows that UV has the lowest value in June with small variation during MJJA. Model estimation also shows that the different characteristic features observed in July between surface UV-B and UV-A is the result of less absorption of UV-B by ozone than that of UV-A by a smaller amount of total ozone.
