  • Yun Gil-Young, who is also known by his pen name, Hyun-Gok, was an Oriental Medicines practitioner since 1943 and was a leader of the society of Oriental medicines in Korea through his advocation as a professor of the University of Eastern Medicines and the College of Oriental Medicines, Kyunghee University. His writings can be first found in the magazine called Eastern Medicines in 1955. His writings, titled 'The Theory of the Biology of Oriental Medicines and its Treatment', elaborates the details of the study of the biology of Oriental Medicines and its directions. His argument of the directions in which to study Biology of Oriental Medicines further are: do not study Biology of Oriental Medicines without understanding its methodology but with knowledge on the biology of western medicines; do not put up with the abstract theory of Yin and Yang and the Five Phases leaving the purpose and the object of the study, just because they are the basic theory of the Biology of Oriental Medicines; do neither matching oriental medicines and western medicines one by one forcibly nor shun the knowledge of western medicines of the modern scientific methodes and try to keep to old customs.

  • In the middle of 19th century, Chosun mathematicians Nam Byung Gil(南秉吉) and Lee Sang Hyuk(李尙爀) studied mathematical structures developed in Song(宋) and Yuan(元) eras on top of their early studies on Jiu zhang suan shu(九章算術) and Shu li jing yun(數理精蘊). Their studies gave rise to a momentum for a prominent development of Chosun mathematics in the century. In this paper, we investigate Nam Byung Gil's JipGoYunDan(輯古演段) and MuIHae(無異解) and then study his theory of equations. Through a collaboration with Lee, Sang Hyuk, he consolidated the eastern and western structure of theory of equations.

  • Gouty arthritis is a common crystal arthropathy, but gout tophus in the bipartite patella is a rare condition. This report presented a traumatic separation of bipartite patellar fragment caused by mild trauma in a patient with comorbid gout. When a patient with bipartite patella and underlying gouty arthritis complains of pain after trauma, clinical suspicion is needed about fragment separation of the bipartite patella.

  • This paper is a sequel to the paper [8], where we discussed the connection between ShiShou KaiFangFa originated from JiuZhang SuanShu and ZengCheng KaiFangFa. Investigating KaiFangShu in a Chosun mathemtics book, SanHak JeongEui and ShuLi JingYun, we show that its authors, Nam ByungGil and Lee SangHyuk clearly understood the connection and gave examples to show that the KaiFangShu in the latter is not exact. We also show that Chosun mathematicians were very much selective when they brought in Chinese mathematics.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness measured by ultrasonography (US) and serum lipid profile and liver transaminases in obese children. Methods: One hundred and sixty-six children diagnosed with obesity from May 2001 to December 2013 were included in this study. Data on serum lipid profile and liver transaminases were collected from clinical records. Abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness and grade of hepatic steatosis were evaluated by US. Results: Of the 166 children, 107 were diagnosed with hepatic steatosis by US, 46 with grade I, 56 with grade II, and five children with grade III. According to the grade of hepatic steasosis, the average values of midline abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness and right flank abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness measured $2.9{\pm}0.8cm$ and $1.9{\pm}0.7cm$ in the normal group, $3.3{\pm}0.8cm$ and $2.0{\pm}0.7cm$ in grade I, $3.8{\pm}0.8cm$ and $2.3{\pm}0.8cm$ in grade II, and $4.1{\pm}0.8cm$ and $2.8{\pm}1.4cm$ in grade III, respectively. Abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness correlated with grade of hepatic steatosis (p<0.01). In addition, abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness correlated with concentration of serum lipids and liver transaminases in the age group of 12-14 years (p<0.01). Conclusion: Abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness measured by US can be used as a reliable predictor of possible hyperlipidemia and steatohepatitis in children, especially during the adolescent stage.
