  • The objective of this study was to assess the variation in the concentration of assimilable organic carbon (AOC) in a drinking water resource, and investigate the characteristics of AOC derived from algae. The seasonal change in AOC at the Kamafusa dam corresponded to changes in the algal cell number. In order to understand the relationship between AOC and algae in a water resource and water purification plant, two kinds of laboratory experiment were performed. The algal culture experiment showed that extracellular organic matter (EOM) that was released during the growth of Phormidium tenue with M-11 medium led to significant increases in the AOC concentration, but no significant variation in the AOC concentration was observed with CT medium containing a high dissolved organic carbon concentration. The chlorination experiment showed that the AOC included in EOM was not easily removed by chlorination, although the AOC included in intercellular organic matter released from the algal cells by chlorination was removed under conditions where residual chlorine was detected.

  • Recently, the demand for the use of personal mobility vehicles, such as an electric kickboard, is increasing explosively because of its high portability and usability. However, the number of traffic accidents caused by personal mobility vehicles has also increased rapidly in recent years. To address the issues regarding the driver's safety, we propose a novel approach that can monitor context information around personal mobility vehicles using deep learning-based object detection and smartphone captured videos. In the proposed framework, a smartphone is attached to a personal mobility device and a front or rear view is recorded to detect an approaching object that may affect the driver's safety. Through the detection results using YOLOv5 model, we report the preliminary results and validated the feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • Existing piles, especially in urban areas, are at risk of being cut by new tunnel construction, potentially affecting their serviceability. This study examined the behaviour of piles under various reinforcement conditions subject to tip cutting resulting from tunnel excavation. For this, the construction of a tunnel using a shield tunnel boring machine adjacent to existing single and group piles was simulated. A three-dimensional finite element analysis was used to perform the simulations. Certain piles in the group were simulated by cutting the pile tips to mimic the effect of tunnel excavation, and the behaviour of the piles was studied by considering the effect of pile cap and ground reinforcements. A numerical analysis was used to examine the ground settlement caused by tunnel excavation, pile head settlement, axial pile force, and shear stress occurring at the pile-ground interface. The results revealed that for all piles with pile tips supported by weathered rock, the shear stress distributions demonstrated similar trends, whereas for piles with cut tips, tensile or compressive forces occurred simultaneously according to the relative position by pile depth. Additionally, when the pile tip was supported by weathered rock, approximately 70% of the support was due to shaft friction and the remaining 30% was provided by the pile tip. For piles without reinforcement, the final settlement was approximately 70% greater than that of piles with grouting reinforcement. These results indicate that pile and ground settlements are substantially influenced by pile tip cutting and reinforcement conditions.

  • Rainfall-runoff prediction studies using deep learning while considering catchment attributes have been gaining attention. In this study, we selected two models: the Transformer model, which is suitable for large-scale data training through the self-attention mechanism, and the LSTM-based multi-state-vector sequence-to-sequence (LSTM-MSV-S2S) model with an encoder-decoder structure. These models were constructed to incorporate catchment attributes and predict the inflow of 10 multi-purpose dam watersheds in South Korea. The experimental design consisted of three training methods: Single-basin Training (ST), Pretraining (PT), and Pretraining-Finetuning (PT-FT). The input data for the models included 10 selected watershed attributes along with meteorological data. The inflow prediction performance was compared based on the training methods. The results showed that the Transformer model outperformed the LSTM-MSV-S2S model when using the PT and PT-FT methods, with the PT-FT method yielding the highest performance. The LSTM-MSV-S2S model showed better performance than the Transformer when using the ST method; however, it showed lower performance when using the PT and PT-FT methods. Additionally, the embedding layer activation vectors and raw catchment attributes were used to cluster watersheds and analyze whether the models learned the similarities between them. The Transformer model demonstrated improved performance among watersheds with similar activation vectors, proving that utilizing information from other pre-trained watersheds enhances the prediction performance. This study compared the suitable models and training methods for each multi-purpose dam and highlighted the necessity of constructing deep learning models using PT and PT-FT methods for domestic watersheds. Furthermore, the results confirmed that the Transformer model outperforms the LSTM-MSV-S2S model when applying PT and PT-FT methods.

  • Background: The present study was undertaken to examine the immunological effects of pentabrominated diphenyl ether (penta-BDE) and decabrominated diphenyl ether (deca-BDE) on the immune system of the dams and the developmental immune system of the offsprings. Methods: In this study, mated female C57BL/6J mice were orally administered penta-BDE, deca-BDE or corn oil for 5 weeks, from gestational day 6 to lactational day 21. Results: The body weight of PND21 exposed to penta-BDE was significantly decreased relative to control mice, but that of post-natal day 63 (PND63) were recovered. Orally dosed dams with penta-BDE had significantly smaller absolute and relative spleen masses than control mice. Absolute and relative spleen and thymus masses of PND21 exposed to penta-BDE were significantly decreased over control. The exposure of dams and PND21 with penta-BDE reduced the number of splenocytes and thymocytes. As results of hematologic analysis, percentage WBC and percentage neutrophils increased in dams with deca-BDE. Splenic T cell proliferation in dams and PND21 exposed to penta-BDE was increased, and there were no significant difference in splenic B cell proliferation in all treatment groups. As results of flow cytometric analysis of splenocyte, percentage total T cell, Th cell and Tc cell in PND21 exposed to penta-BDE was slightly increased, and percentage macrophage in dams and PND21 exposed to deca-BDE was decreased. The ELISA results of antibody production show no significant difference in all treatment groups relative to controls. Conclusion: These results imply that PBDEs given to the dam were transferred to the offspring during gestation and lactation, and PBDEs transferred from the dam affect immune system of offspring.

  • In this study, the daily inflow at the basin of Chungju dam is predicted using wavelet-artificial neural network for nonlinear model. Time series generally consists of a linear combination of trend, periodicity and stochastic component. However, when framing time series model through these data, trend and periodicity component have to be removed. Wavelet transform which is denoising technique is applied to remove nonlinear dynamic noise such as trend and periodicity included in hydrometeorological data and simple noise that arises in the measurement process. The wavelet-artificial neural network (WANN) using data applied wavelet transform as input variable and the artificial neural network (ANN) using only raw data are compared. As a results, coefficient of determination and the slope through linear regression show that WANN is higher than ANN by 0.031 and 0.0115 respectively. And RMSE and RRMSE of WANN are smaller than those of ANN by 37.388 and 0.099 respectively. Therefore, WANN model applied in this study shows more accurate results than ANN and application of denoising technique through wavelet transforms is expected that more accurate predictions than the use of raw data with noise.

  • The recent increased interest in hygiene has led to the use of a variety of detergents everyday life. Accordingly, accidents occur frequently, but proper precautions or treatments have not yet been established for these occasions. The patient in this case had accidentally ingested basic detergent, after mistaking it for a drink. This had caused acid reflux swallowing distress. Treatment in a western medical hospital had resulted in improvement in inflammation, as observed with an esophageal endoscopy test, but the patient still found it almost impossible to drink or eat. Following treatment with herbal medicine and acupuncture, the patient’s food intake increased and the pain and dysphagia were diminished. We cannot generalize based only on this one case study, so further studies are needed.
