  • Distribution patterns of two pine sawyer species (Monochamus alternatus which is the main vector insect and M. saltuarius which is the potential insect vector of the pine wood nematode) were investigated in Korea. The data were collected at 89 study sites which were chosen to cover the whole region of South Korea. The selected pine trees were killed in early April and left for I year in the pine stands to be egg-laid by the pine sawyers. Emergence of the beetles from the dead pine trees was checked from early April to late July. M. saltuarius was the most abundant in the mid to northern areas of South Korea, whereas M. alternatus in Jeju-do, southernmost island of Korea. Considering temperature distribution patterns in areas where the two species occur, their thermal distribution boundary may be formed around $13.2^{\circ}C$ of annual mean temperature. The hypothesized distribution map of the two Monochamus species under the invasion of pine wilt disease is suggested on the base of thermal distribution of Korean peninsula.

  • The field surveys and the seawater analyses were conducted over the southern waters of Cheju island every month from July 1997 to June 1988. The distributions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP), chemical oxygen demand(COD) and dissolved oxygen(DO) in the southern water area of Cheju island were simulated and reproduced by an ecosystem model. In order to estimate the environmental capacity of the southern coastal area of Cheju island, the simulations for predicting the situation of unfavorable environment in which marine water quality might not be satisfied with Korean standards were performed with an ecosystem model by controlling quantitatively the pollution loads of discharge sources including streams flowing into the sea. The more the loads of 4 major pollution sources flowing into model region increase, the more evident appear the increases of COD, DIN and DIP concentrations around the water areas adjacent to pollution sources. In case the pollution loads of all 4 discharge sources including streams become 3 times as high as the present loads, the concentration of DIN at near-shore waters appears to be increased to about 14.5mmol/m³(=0.20mg/ℓ) which is the third class criterion of Korean standards for marine water quality. In case of 10 times as high as the present loads, COD at near-shore waters appears to be increased to about 1.0mg/ℓ which is the first class criterion of Korean standards. In case of 20 times as high as the present loads, DIP at near-shore waters appears to be increased to about 0.50mmol/m³(=0.015mg/ℓ) which is the second class criterion of Korean standards.

  • Landsat images were globally used to monitoring the Earth's. But it is not positively applied to a field of environment such as coastal environment, heat island effect and drought condition and so on. Until recently, Information about a ecology natural environment came to do by direct investigation. But Information about a ecology·natural environment of wide area were quickly getting possible with the progress of remote sensing technique. Specially, the up-to-date characteristic information about an ecology·natural environment as the basic intelligence for a country development activity are very important. So, it applies the satellite images that the periodic observation of data is possible. In this study, We planned the function which is possible helping the renewal of an ecology·natural environmental information using Landsat imagery. Also planned the DB suitable for these purpose. For application of thermal infrared band images we developed the function that extracts an isothermal line. It used the thermal infrared band images and it grasped a temperature distribution. The result is useful in analysis of the city heat island effectiveness.

  • In order to determine the spatio-temporal distribution of macrobenthic faunal communities in Jinhae Bay, quantitative faunal samples were collected seasonally at 23 sites in Jinhae Bay from February, 2011 to November, 2012. Sediment facies were found to be mud except for those at Chilcheon-do near Geoje Island. Mean values of TOC (%) ranged between 1.3 and 3.6%, and these are the highest values recorded excluding special management areas in Korea. Hypoxia occurred every summer in the whole areas of Jinhae Bay except around Geoje Island in the bay mouth. Due to the summer hypoxia, species richness, density and biomass also declined during the summer in Jinhae Bay. Opportunistic species such as Paraprionospio patiens, Sigambra bassi, Nectoneanthes oxypoda and Theora fragilis occurred as the dominant species before and after the hypoxia. However, Capitella capitata appeared as a dominant species only during the winter-spring season every year. From cluster analysis, Jinhae Bay could be divided into two sites groups: one group occupied the normoxic zone and the other one located in the hypoxic zone.

  • A newly recorded species, Boehmeria nakashimae Yahara, is confirmed for the first time to be distributed on forest edges on Jejudo Island, Korea. This species is known to be endemic to northern Kyushu, Japan. It is characterized by ovate to broadly ovate, elliptic-ovate, or sub-orbicular middle leaf shapes, serrulate-dentate and uniform margins, 17-29 teeth on one side, a short caudate or narrowly acute apex, dense glomerules at fruiting, and densely strigillose on the stems, both surfaces of the leaves, the perianth of staminate flowers, and achenes. Therefore, it is given the new name 'Je-ju-top-mo-si-pul' in Korean based on its serrulate-dentate leaf margin and geographical distribution. A description, photographs, illustrations, and keys of related taxa in Korea are provided.

  • Rubus palmatus Thunb. var. palmatus (Rosaceae) was first discovered in Anmyeon-do and Geoje-do, Korea, and the new Korean name 'Gin-yip-dan-pung-ttal-gi' was given. This taxon can be distinguished from var. coptophyllus by having 3-lobed or rarely undivided leaves. We, for the first time, report the distribution of R. palmatus var. coptophyllus (A. Gray) Kuntze from the island of Geoje-do in Korea and clarified the Korean vernacular name of 'Dan-pung-ttal-gi.' Finally, we designated the lectotype of R. palmatus using C. P. Thunberg's specimen (UPS-THUNB. 12282).
