  • A dormitory is the most important compound space to college students who have to live with others. Also, for the students living in the boarding area, the dorm space can be the space for learning, exchanges and cultural. These Housing environment is a public space, so this is based on Universal Design. However, the 1970s-built dormitory space for the current user is narrow and not right for furniture standard. In this study, in order to compensate for these problems, the design directions are based on the previous studies - Park, Young-Soon, 2008, 'A Proposal on Dormitory Furniture Design for University Students.' Based on the previous study, the type of variable design is designed for desks, bookcases, beds, wardrobes, and other cabinets as representative household types. Furthermore, these furnitures are assembled and transformed depend on the dormitory space for single, double and four students. The furniture assembly system and arrangement module are presented in the direction of three kinds of designs. Therefore, three meaning of this study are the development of design to be used each item, the realization of custom furniture for space and presenting variable design module.

  • As livestock husbandry has broadened from family-scale to enterprise-scale, the number of farming families has decreased in contrast to the increase of the number of livestock, and the amount of livestock manure discharged per household has increased. Livestock manure is difficult to handle and its disposal in the ocean is prohibited. Moreover, facilities that compost and liquefy manure are blamed as sources of soil, ground water, and surface water pollution because the amount of manure generated from husbandry farms causes eutrophication. In this study, livestock manure was utilized as a feedstock of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process to produce biochar for use as an environmental medium. The biochar was tested for iodine adsorption capability and its performance was compared with other adsorbent materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the factors related to how Korean working mothers balance work and family. We used the first year data of 1661 working mothers participating Korean Longitudinal Study of Women and Families. When mothers were living with their parents-in-law, reported higher level of work-family spillover; whereas satisfaction with husband's household chores was more their related to lower level of work-family spillover. Attitudes placing lower priority on family, disagreement on their works with husband, and traditional family role perception were related to higher level of work-family interference. We also found that salary, working hours, job satisfaction, and a series of maternity protection programs, including maternity leave, were significantly related to work-family balance.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to level of satisfaction among mothers of preschoolers. Methods: Participants were 359 mothers of firstborn healthy preschoolers. The questionnaires were collected from August 1 to November 21, 2012. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0. Results: The mean score for degree of mothers' parenting satisfaction was 5.94 out of 7. There were significant differences in the level of parenting satisfaction according to mother's job (t=2.48, p=.014), planned pregnancy (t=3.07, p=.002), number of children (t=2.22, p=.027), and parenting education (F=4.33, p=.005). The environmental variables of age of spouse (F=3.06, p=.048) and monthly income of the household (F=2.87, p=.036) also seemed to have an influence. Analysis of predictors such as the mother's job, planned pregnancy, parenting education, overall health problems, parenting stress, perception of emotional status and behaviors in children, age of spouse, and spouse's support explained 31.5% of the variance in mother's parenting satisfaction. Conclusion: The results suggest a need to develop nursing intervention programs for parenting stress reduction, and health programs for fathers to support mothers' child rearing.

  • Annual amount of plastics waste including rubber and leather waste, generated in 1990 was about 2,600,000 tons. Amount of generation of plastics waste has rapidly increased, but fractions of recycling and incineration have gradually decreased. Recently, two-stage incinerator, consisting of gasifier and gas combustor, draws much attention in Korea. Plastics are gasified in the starved air condition in the gasifier and produced gas is fired in the combustor. Combustion of produced gas is much easier than that of solid plastics, and produces a little pollutants. Standardzation of technology and process automation are still needed, but this incineration technology is in the commercial stage. Next topic concerned with this two-stage incineration will be how to treat complex plastics waste including toxic substances generated from automobiles and household appliances. Pyrolysis, realized by indirect heating in inert atmosphere, can provide high-quality products with minimum emissions. Many plastics are easily decomposed into oil in pyrolysis conditions, which can be utilized as chemical feedstocks, or gasoline or kerosene depending on feed materials and operating conditions. This has been demonstrated in several pilot-scale tests performed in Japan, Germany, etc. Easy removal of HCl from PVC is one of the most decisive merits of pyrolysis process. But in general, further efforts should be made for the process to obtain marketability. The future of pyrolysis process depends on public concern about environmental problems and oil prices.

  • Arsenic is a ubiquitous, naturally occurring metalloid that may be a significant risk factor for cancer after exposure to contaminated drinking water, cigarettes, foods, industry, occupational environment, and air. Among the various routes of arsenic exposure, drinking water is the largest source of arsenic poisoning worldwide. Arsenic exposure from ingested foods usually comes from food crops grown in arsenic-contaminated soil and/or irrigated with arsenic-contaminated water. According to a recent World Health Organization report, arsenic from contaminated water can be quickly and easily absorbed and depending on its metabolic form, may adversely affect human health. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration regulations for metals found in cosmetics to protect consumers against contaminations deemed deleterious to health; some cosmetics were found to contain a variety of chemicals including heavy metals, which are sometimes used as preservatives. Moreover, developing countries tend to have a growing number of industrial factories that unfortunately, harm the environment, especially in cities where industrial and vehicle emissions, as well as household activities, cause serious air pollution. Air is also an important source of arsenic exposure in areas with industrial activity. The presence of arsenic in airborne particulate matter is considered a risk for certain diseases. Taken together, various potential pathways of arsenic exposure seem to affect humans adversely, and future efforts to reduce arsenic exposure caused by environmental factors should be made.
