This study was carried out to investigate the applicability of SAC-SMA model with parameters which were derived from analytical relationships proposed by Koren etc. (2000), with various data of soil properties in a basin. The studied basin is Yongdam dam basin and the daily runoff with 2003-year hydrological data was simulated. Simulated runoff results were compared with those measured at three check points(Chuchun, Donhyang and Yongdam) and analyzed through the statistical techniques such as VE(Volume Error), RMSE(Root Mean Squared Error) and CORR(Correlation). As a result of analyses, the good agreement was obtained between simulated and measured results.
In this study, a regression model was developed for prediction of inflow temperature to support an effective thermal stratification simulation of Yongdam Reservoir, using the relationship between gaged inflow temperature and air temperature. The effect of reproductability for thermal stratification was evaluated using EFDC model by gaged vertical profile data of water temperature(from June to December in 2005) and ex-developed regression models. Therefore, in the development process, the coefficient of correlation and determination are 0.96 and 0.922, respectively. Moreover, the developed model showed good performance in reproducing the reservoir thermal stratification. Results of this research can be a role to provide a base for building of prediction model for water quality management in near future.
Detailed estimation of subsurface resistivity distribution and accurate estimation of actual fault current coming into the grounding system are indispensible to optimun grounding system design. Especially, it is essential for efficient grounding design to estimate subsurface resistivity distribution quantitatively and logically. Accurate estimation of subsurface resistivity distribution has an absolute influence on calculating touch voltage, step voltage and ground potential rise (GPR) which are related with grounding design standard for human safety. In this study, thirty-three electrical sounding surveys were made in Yongdam Power Station to obtain detailed subsurface resistivity distribution and the sounding data were interpreted quantitatively using multi-layered model. The results of the quantitative resistivity models were adopted practically to calculate grounding resistance values. Analytical asymptotic equations and CDEGS program were used in grounding resistance calculation and the results were compared and reviewed in the study.

Yongdam Lake is the fifth largest artificial lake in Korea newly formed by the first impounding the Yongdam Multi-purpose Dam on December, 2002. Yongdam Lake, with her total water storage of 820 million M/T, is located at the roof-top region of the streams flowing into the just-constructed new Saemankeum Lake. Seasonal succession of phytoplakton in Yongdam Lake might affect cyanobacterial blooms in Saemankeum Lake by inoculating seasonal dominants. During 2002-2003 when the first impounding after the construction of Yongdam Multi-purpose Dam was still undergoing, summer cyanobacterial blooms by Anabaena, Microcystis, and Aphanizomenon were observed. Among these three, filamentous Anabaena is well known to have its species with $N_2-fixing$ ability and special cells such as heterocysts and akinetes as well as the vegetative cells. We established a clonal culture of Anabaena spiroides v. crasse (KNU-YD0310) from the live water samples collected at the bloom site of Yongdam Lake. The N- and P-nutrient requirement of the KNU-YD0310 was explored by the experimental cultivation of the laboratory strain. Ratio of heterocysts to vegetative cells increased as N-deficiency extended with its maximum at $N_2-fixing$ condition. The strain KNU-YD0310 exhibited considerable growth under N-limiting conditions while its growth was proportional to the initial phosphate-P concentration under P-deficient conditions. Under P-limiting conditions akinete density increased, which could be interpreted as an adaptation strategy to survive severe environment by transforming into resting stage. The above eco-physiological characteristics of Anabaena spiroides v. crassa might be useful as an ecological criterion in controlling cyanobacterial blooms at Shaemankeum Lake in near future.

The risk of disasters, such as floods and drought, has increased. Reliable hydrological data is important for analyzing the water resource and designing hydraulic structure to manage these risks. The Yongdam Guryang river catchment located in the central of Korea is the research catchment of K-water and UNESCO IHP, and the hydrological data, such as rainfall, runoff, evapotranspiration, etc. has been observed at the catchment. The aim of this study was to assess the runoff characteristics of the small mountainous catchment of Korea based on the observed hydrological data, and the Probability Distributed Model was applied as the Rainfall-Runoff Model at the Yongdam Guryang river catchment. The hydrological data was divided into the wet period from June to September and dry period from October to May according to data analysis. The runoff ratio was 0.27~0.41 in the wet period and 0.30~0.45 in the dry period. The calibration result by the Probability Distributed Model showed a difference in the calibrated model parameters according to the periods. In addition, the model simulated the runoff accurately except for the dry period of 2015, and the result revealed the applicability of the PDM. This study showed the runoff characteristics of the small mountainous catchment by dividing the hydrological data into dry and wet periods.

This study is to evaluate the accuracy improvement of the model using SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model and multi - point hydrological observation data. The watershed is located in the Yongdam Dam($930.4km^2$), the Donghyang($165.5km^2$), the Chuncheon($290.9km^2$), the Juchun($57.8km^2$) and the Seokjeong($80.5km^2$). The watershed covers 70.0 % forest. In order to improve the accuracy of the model, precipitation data were used from two weather stations(Jangsu, Geumsan) and 16 AWS stations daily precipitation data(2003~2011) managed by KMA, MLIT, and K-water. Based on the reliable data of the Yongam test basin in 2003~2011, the runoff of single point (Yongdam dam) and multi-point (Donghyang, Chuncheon, Jucheon, Seokjeong). Simulation results show that the $R^2$ of the single subwatershed (Donghyang, Chuncheon, Jucheon, Seokjeong) is single point(0.84) and multipoint(0.88). For model efficiency coefficient of Nash-Sutcliffe at single point(0.45) and multipoint(0.70).

This study was carried out to assess the variations of water quality caused by the dam construction on the river. Six dams-Yongdam, Miryang, Hoengseong, Boryeong, Jangheung and Buan- constructed recently in Korea were selected for the study. Chemical oxygen demand(COD) was increased in the initial stage of water storage at dams compared to the lotic(river) environment, but after 3 years it was maintained lower and stabilized concentrations. Five dams except for Jangheung Dam were maintained Ia~Ib grade conditions under the water quality criteria of Korea. The concentrations of total nitrogen(T-N) were decreased under the lentic(reservoir) environment compared to the river status. Total phosphorus(T-P) was decreased 13~63% at the reservoir condition. We concluded that increase of COD concentration was due to the debris organic materials of the land, but temporary phenomenon. T-N and T-P concentrations were decreased at the lentic condition compared to the lotic.

This study was to examine impacts of turbid water on fish community in the downstream of Yongdam Dam during the period from June to October 2006. For the research, we selected six sampling sites in the field: two sites were controls with no influences of turbid water from the dam and other remaining four sites were the stations for an assessment of potential turbid effects. We evaluated integrative health conditions throughout applications of various models such as necropsy-based fish health assessment model (FHA), Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) using fish assemblages, and Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI). Laboratory tests on fish exposure under 400 NTU were performed to find out impact of turbid water using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that fine solid particles were clogging in the gill in the treatments, while particles were not found in the control. This results indicate that when inorganic turbidity increases abruptedly, fish may have a mechanical abrasion or respiratory blocking. The stream health condition, based on the IBI values, ranged between 38 and 48 (average: 42), indicating a "excellent" or "good" condition after the criteria of US EPA (1993). In the mean time, physical habitat condition, based on the QHEI, ranged 97 to 187 (average 154), indicating a "suboptimal condition". These biological outcomes were compared with chemical dataset: IBI values were more correlated (r=0.526, p<0.05, n=18) with QHEI rather than chemical water quality, based on turbidity (r=0.260, p>0.05, n=18). Analysis of the FHA showed that the individual health indicated "excellent condition", while QHEI showed no habitat disturbances (especially bottom substrate and embeddeness), food-web, and spawning place. Consequently, we concluded that the ecological health in downstream of Yongdam Dam was not impacted by the turbid water.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a quantitative assessment of wetland damage considering the effects of topsoil erosion and deposition from rainfall. In the Cheoncheon Basin located upstream of the Yongdam Dam, 16 wetlands are located, but the lacustrine and small palustrine wetland were analyzed for possible damage to erosion and deposition. As a result of applying typhoon events in 2002 and 2003, the sediment load from the upper basin was the highest at 2.30% (22,548 ㎥) of low water capacity. The average sediment load in the mountain areas was found to be 0.03% of the low water capacity, and it was analyzed to be less damaging than the lacustrine with relatively large watershed. as a result of the model, the lacustrine wetland, where a large area is used as agricultural land, shows a high probability of sediment yield, so it is highly likely to damage the wetland by topsoil erosion.
