  • We briefly show the results of indoor and personal $PM_{2.5}$ measurements in an epidemiologic study designed to evaluate the health risks of ambient $PM_{2.5}$ in Japan and the relationship between indoor and outdoor PM concentrations. The impact of indoor and outdoor PM pollution on health is described based on one morbidity study. The results of other studies on indoor $PM_{2.5}$ measurements are also described.

  • In this paper, we apply to a genetic algorithm for fuzzy clustering. We propose initialization procedure and genetic operators such as selection, crossover and mutation, which are suitable for solving the problems. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we solve the manufacturing cell formation problem and present computational comparisons to generalized Fuzzy c-Means algorithm.

  • The Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation scheme is modified to improve the error performance of the correlative coding in the Tamed FM. To remove intersymbol interference, the Decision Feedback Equalization scheme with the delayed LMS algorithm and the Viterbi algorithm(10-symbol delay) in the delayed adaptive equalization are proposed for the performance of decision-directed adaptive equalization under the High Frequency channels, and the condition of convergence is analyzed.

  • Poisonous mushrooms have attracted much attention of scientists because of the unique chemical structures and the remarkable biological properties of their toxic components. A wide range of compounds has been characterized as toxic principles, and some of them have widened the horizons of chemical and biological research. Therefore, poisonous mushrooms can serve for a resource of biomedical application. We will describe the recent progress of such aspect of poisonous mushrooms.

  • Preparative methods for and catalytic activities of monoaza-18-crown-6 or monoaza-15-crown-5 in the reaction of 1-bromooctane with aqueous KI or NaI were investigated. Monoazacrown ethers were prepared by debenzylation of N-benzylmonoazacrown ethers, obtained from the reaction of N-benzyldiethanolamine and oligoethylene glycol ditosylate. The phase-transfer catalytic activity of N-benzylmonoazacrown ethers was higher than that of the corresponding monoazacrown ethers.

  • We formed $SiO_2:F$ films by low-temperature process called Liquid Phase Deposition(LPD) and investigated its electrical and physical properties. Because of the use of room-temperature and no special vacuum apparatus for forming $SiO_2:F$ films, this technique can have some advantages related with the application to dielectric interlayer for multilevel structure in ULSI devices. The growth rate 100nm/hr was obtained at the growth solution of 2.5mol/l. The P-etch rate showed a similar or better tendency compared with $SiO_2$ films formed by CVD, Sputter, E-beam evaporator etc.. The fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra revealed that the contained fluorine atoms exist uniform throughout the formed $SiO_2$ films. The Scanning Electron Microscope images showed that LPD-$SiO_2$ films could be stably grown on silicon substrates and the good step-coverage could also be obtained, which indicates that the LPD-$SiO_2$ films have some possibility of the application to planarization and interlayer dielectric films which are vitally necessary to achieve the multilevel interconnection in ULSI. The I-V characteristics has some distinct differences according to the concentration of growth solution.

  • This paper verifies the difference of the seismic behavior and seismic damage of the neighboring two reinforced concrete piers damaged by the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu earthquake. The two piers were almost the same size, carrying slightly different dead load, and were provided with the same reinforcement arrangement except the amount of longitudinal reinforcement at the bottom portion of the piers. The pier with more reinforcement was completely collapsed due to this near field earthquake by shear failure at the longitudinal reinforcement cut-off while the other was only damaged at the bottom by flexure even though the longitudinal reinforcement cut-off was also existed at the mid height of the pier. According to the results of the pseudo dynamic test, the seismic damage was recognized to be greatly dependent on the ground motion characteristics even though the employed ground motions had the same peak acceleration. The severe damage was observed when the test employed the seismic wave that had strong influence to the longer period range compared to the initial natural period of the pier. On the other hand, based on the similar model experiment, the defect of gas-pressure welded splice of longitudinal reinforcement was revealed to save the piers against collapse due to the so-called fail-safe mechanism contrary to the intuitive opinion of some researchers. It was concluded that the primary cause of the collapse of the pier was the extremely strong intensity and peculiar characteristics of the earthquake motion according to both the site-specific and the structure-specific effects.

  • Using a questionnaire, this study examined the users' consciousness through the human five senses on the waterside space in the district of Minato Mirai 21, Yokohama located in the east of Kanagawa prefecture, which is well known for its waterfront in Japan. Among the users, the results of the questionnaire showed 52.2% of male, and 29.6% accounted for people in their twenties as the dominant groups. Out of the nineteen questions regarding the consciousness on the waterside space, 'feel the sea breeze' accounted for 237(78.7%) while 'the sea is visible' accounted for 217(72.1%). Then, the contents of the nineteen questions were re-classified into such seven items as the human five senses(sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell), activities, and the existence of facilities, discovering the consciousness of the users. The results demonstrated that touch(22.9%) and sight(20.8%) respectively were the most influential items.

  • University has various resources such as intellectual human resource, spatial resource and facilities, and economic resource. At the same time, universities are, in general, found upon fundamental mission of public service, as well as teaching and research. Recently in Korea, it has been argued that we should make use of such resource of universities in the process of urban regeneration through university-community partnership. Yet, these arguments are lack of concreteness: 'which' kind of resource for 'what' kind of problem, and 'how'. Therefore, this research examined the case of university-community partnership in Japan and tried to find of some implications to Korean society. The reason for examining Japanese case is because Japan has experienced similar problems that Korea face such as aging population, decrease in the number of student, deteriorations of existing urban area; there are respectable amount of similarities between Japan and Korea in political, social and economic context; and because Japan has proceeded regeneration of communities through university-community partnerships.
