  • Songjeol-tea is a prescription that mixes alcohol with some ingredients and Songjeol[松節], and appears only in the King-Yeongjo era throughout 『Seungjeongwon Ilgi』. King Yeongjo recognized that the Songjeol-tea was an excellent prescription for the treatment of leg diseases, and took it in various ways thanks to the title of "tea" by his officials and doctors. There were many internal conflicts as King Yeongjo taking a prescription in the form of alcohol in a situation where an official who violated it was punished after issuing prohibition of drinking alcohol, and recognized the Songjeol-tea as alcohol. The officials and doctors of King Yeongjo's reign rationalized the King's actions by creating a justification for taking the Songjeol-tea to treat the disease because the king's body was related to the safety of the state.

The architectural characteristics of Sungnyemun in King Yeongjo's reign are closely related with Confucian ceremonies such as Jeon-jwa and Heon-goek-rye. To perform these ceremonies, some lower walls of Sungnyemun's wooden pavilion were removed and used as ceremonial space. And after ceremony it was restored. 2. The floor type of center bay of the 1st story of wooden pavilion should have a type of floor using long and narrow fine tree plate, which is same type before the repair work of 1960's dismantlement. 3. The width of east stairway which is reached to east small gate, was changed just before Japanese's rule(1910~1945), should be broaden than present width, which is proven through the recent excavation. 4. The reason of asymmetric characteristic of locations of both east and west narrow-gate, and widths of east and west stairway, are related with order of King's ceremony. * Jeonjwa : a ceremony to see national affairs or receive royalty from officials in main hall or main gate of palace in Joseon dynasty (some times open to public) * Heon-goek-rye : a ceremony after win a war and offering to king enemy's ear or head in Joseon dynasty.

  • "Ohju Yeonmun Jangjeon Sango" written by Lee, Gyu-gyeng is one of the most important encyclopedias in the period of Chosun-Dynasty. There are two chapters related to architecture in this book, one is "ancestral rite governance·human"chapter, and the other is "architecture·human" chapter. Both of them are hard to understand because they are written in ancient Chinese and consist of various quotations in ambiguous way. This paper as a partial study is deal with the former. It makes difference between writter's original texts and quotations through textual research, and translates to modern Korean, and analyze information about ancient architecture in texts. The texts can divide to three sections. The first introduces three Chinese architectural theory books as "Gogonggi(考工記)", "Yeongjo Beopsik(營造法式)" and "Mokgyeng(木經)", and mentions about the prototype of the royal ancestral ritual building in "Gogonggi Toju(考工記圖注)". The second quotes "Seoyeong(書影)" to introduce "Yeongjo Beopsik". The third quotes "PaePyeon(稗編)" to introduce "Yeongjo Beopsik" and "Mokgyeng", and mentions about the counting unit of columns of the royal ancestral ritual building. Although the purpose for these quotations is not directly mentioned, but we can find it is intended to explain the architectural prototype and lay-out of the royal ancestral ritual building.

  • Lee Heon gil (a.k.a. Mongsoo), who was the pioneer of measles treatment in the 18th century, is the 14th generation of the Deokcheongun branch of the Lee family from Jeonju, living from August 25, 1738 (14th year of King Yeongjo) to April 29, 1784 (8th year of King Jeongjo). Under his teacher Lee Cheol hwan, the eldest grandson of Lee Yik, he learned medicine and studied it deeply. His medical service was most remarkable when measles was prevalent in 1775 (51st year of King Yeongjo) at his age of 38. It seems that he wrote books on measles based on his experiences at that time. Lee Heon gil's academic background can be inferred from his relation with Lee Cheol hwan and Jeong Yak yong. Associating with Lee Cheol hwan, he established close relationships with many scholars including the Lee family from Yeoju, who were the descendents of Seongho Lee Yik, and through this fellowship he was influenced directly and indirectly by Seongho Lee Yik. In addition, he maintained close contact with Jeong Yak yong while treating him several times. As Jeong Yak yong was also in close academic association with scholars in the Seongho School and Lee Yik's pupils, he had a philosophical consensus with Lee Heon gil. These academic backgrounds show that the philosophical flow of the Seongho School from Seongho Lee Yik to Jeong Yak yong also reached Lee Heongil.

The first adoption of paejang system was found at the construction of Ganghwa-oyseong in 1690. Since the period of King Yeongjo and Jeongjo, it was generally used as a working system. 3. Yoo Hyeongwon had early suggested that this system should be adopted as a reformative system because it had a perfect command system like Soko-je, the provincial military system. 4. At the constructions of Dongnae-upseong, Jeonjoo-upseong and Daegoo-upseong in the period of King Yeongjo, paes were organized to $40{\sim}60$units, and worked in the fields of masonry, carnage and picking of stones. 5. At the construction of Soowon-seong in the period of King Jeongjo, a large number of various paejangs participated in all of working fields. Especially masonry-paes were usually organized with over 100 units. 6. It was estimated that paejang system surely could guarantee saving labors and term of works. Moreover, it was a basis for the further development form of dogup-je, a contracted work system. 7. Paejang system was applied in the constructions of Buddhist temples since the middle period of 1700s and later, it was widely used in the constructions of palaces.
