  • This paper is on the luster property of fertile fabric materials which is one of the important factors related to the development of clothing materials leading to the value-added products. Using several image analysis techniques, the optical properties, especially luster related ones, of the commercially available fabrics were measured and analyzed. The fabric samples included 6 kinds of preliminary experimental fabrics along with 22 kinds of fabric which were commercially available. The images acquired at various observing angles are taken by 44 Points and these Pictures are analyzed into luster through the image analysis program. The preliminary experiment demonstrated the effects of weave types and the number of yarn twist on the luster of the fabrics through the use of the image analysis program.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the fashion trends of last three years and how the trends were imaged by the structural characteristics of the fabrics. The characteristics for 897 fabrics were analyzed from four kinds. eleven volumes of fashion trend magazines. From these magazines, three panels categorized by their frequencies as nine images such as natural, innocent, ethnic, childish, casual, classic, modern and technical, Sub-images of each image such as rustic, irregular, decorative, etc were also categorized. For the each image, fiber contents and structural characteristics of weave type, weight, density, yarn size, twist and fabric finishes were investigated in terms of frequency, range and mean, Results showed that chiffon and organza seemed to have very specific images and used to represent specifically the romantic or ethnic images; whereas voile and jersey was used to represent various images. For S/S seasons, most popular fiber type was cotton. The weave type was not the important factor to give variations in images; plan weave exclusively used irrespective of image. For the romantic, ethnic and innocent images, rather light fabrics were used. For the childish and natural, medium weights, and for the technical, modern and classic images heavy weight fabrics were used. Vaious finishes were employed to represent specific images.

  • Polytrimethylene terephthalate(PTT) offers several advantageous properties such as good tensile strength, uniformity, stiffness, toughness, UV stability, resilience, stain resistance, outstanding elastic recovery, and dyeability. The effects of annealing temperature on physical properties and the structure of PTT filaments and yarn were investigated by measuring wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), density, optical birefringence, dynamic visco elasticity, and tensile testing. The intensity of maximum tan ${\delta}$ decreased and the temperature of maximum tan ${\delta}$ shifted to a higher temperature as the annealing temperature of filaments increased; however, it shifted to a lower temperature when the annealing temperature exceeded $130^{\circ}C$. In addition, crystallinity, density and D-spacing of (010) crystal face increased as the annealing temperature increased. Optical birefringence and specific stress were almost constant up to $100^{\circ}C$ and then decreased above $130^{\circ}C$. The shrinkage of PTT filament is 0 in boiling water when annealed above $130^{\circ}C$; consequently, the use of annealed fiber above $130^{\circ}C$ can remove thermal instability when dyeing PTT fiber. In the case of yarns, the thermal stability and physical properties of yarns showed the best effect when the ply number is less than 5, twist number is less than 400tpm, and the annealing time is 20minutes.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the structural characteristics of men's suit fabrics on the texture image and the preference, and to analyze the relationship between the preference and the practical sales ratio. In addition, the texture images and the preference of fabric and jackets made of the same fabrics were compared. As specimen, jackets for men's suit of 2002' S/S and their fabrics were collected. Questionnaires composed of 22 sensibility related and 21 fabric image related adjectives were developed. For the subjective evaluation of the texture image, both jackets and fabric samples were tested. Tests were performed with 100 female subjects in clothing department and apparel industry. For the objective evaluation, structural characteristics such as fiber contents, yarn twist, fabric count, thickness and weight were analyzed. Total Hand Value were calculated from mechanical properties determined by the KES-FB system. Factor analysis showed sensibilities were classified into 6 categories; "surface roughness", "weight", "density", "stiffness", "elasticity" and "wetness". Fabric images were classified into 4 categories; "classic", "original", "practical", and "stuffy". Depending on the method to show the specimen to the subjects, whether it is suit or fabric, statistically significant differences were observed with a number of adjectives for sensibilities and fabric images. The results of THV of KES did not agree with the preference of subjects, which suggests that we should be careful when using the KES system, which was developed for Japanese people. Price was considered to be another factor besides the texture image that influenced on purchase.
