  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare exercise performance with related factors between Korean and Korean-Chinese nursing students. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional comparative survey method. One hundred sixty five Korean nursing students in Seoul, South Korea and 161 Korean-Chinese nursing students in Yanbian, China were recruited through convenience sampling. They were at the age of 19-26. Exercise performance and exercise-related factors were measured using the exercise performance degree scale and the scales of self-efficacy, perceived barriers, perceived benefits, and affection related to exercise. Results: No significant difference in exercise performance was seen between the two groups. Self-efficacy and perceived benefits related to exercise performance were significantly higher in the Korean nursing students than in the Korean-Chinese nursing students. However, there were no significant differences in affection and perceived barriers related to exercise. Conclusion: We suggest that the reasons for the differences in self-efficacy and in perceived benefits between these two groups need to be explored though future studies. We suggest more studies comparing different groups having the same ethnicity as Korean but who were born into different societies to give answers regarding the influence of immigrated transition on health.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze characteristics of literature on the residential environments of Korean-Chinese people residing in China. The number of such studies on residential environment is a total of 123, of which 86 (69.9%) are Korean studies and 37 (30.1%) are Chinese studies. Research has been conducted in China since the 1980s, but from 1990s onward, research was conducted in Korea following the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations. More studies related to history, society, and tradition have been conducted in China than Korea because China is a multiracial nation and Korean-Chinese people comprise an ethnic minority. In terms of residential environment, the majority of studies are related to architecture and space and are typically focused on villages and housing. Studies on traditional housing of the Korean-Chinese focus on general characteristics of traditional housing, targeting China's three northeast provinces and the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of China. Studies on modern housing of the Korean-Chinese have mainly been conducted in Yanji City in China. The reason for this is that 41% of Yanji City's population is Korean-Chinese, a distinct difference can be seen between Yanji City and other areas regarding changes of modern housing, and ondol (the traditional Korean floor heating system) is commonly found in modern housing there.

  • This article is a review on the Korean geographers' China studies. There were severe limits to make China study in Korea during the Cold War Period. Since 1992, the fear of Korea-China establishment of diplomatic relation Korean geographers' China studies have been increased substantially Until December 2003, 89 articles were published on the journals related to geographical study, and 9 Ph.D. dissertations were submitted to graduate school departments of geography or geography education in Korea. This is an evidence of the rapid development of China study in Korean geographical society. Early 1990s, geographers of Yanbian university located in northeast China played an important role in the development of research. After the period, Korean domestic geographers' studies have also increased. There has been a distinct progress in the fields of economic and urban geography. However, the development of theory, diversification of themes, and professional study in the macro-regional scale could be proposed as the tasks of future research.

Questionnaire was used for measurement tools to study the subject of the thesis. The main study was conducted against 450 college students from May 17 to June 5, 2001. The data for the study were analyzed using SAS PC program for frequency distribution, percentage, t -test, and one way ANOVA. The purchase motivation for garment are affected by demographic factors such as gender, average monthly household income, monthly expense for clothing. The result was showed as follows: A meaningful difference showed in 3 areas 'to try a new trend, impulsive buying at the store display, discount advertising' depending on the gender in terms of purchase motivations, and in all the three areas, male students showed a higher ranking. But in other motivation areas, no difference was noticed in terms of gender. In terms of purchase motivation based on monthly income, only one area 'impulse buying from a store display' showed a meaningful difference. Respondents with an average monthly household income above 2,000 yuan showed a higher tendency of 'impulse buying' compared to those with below 500 yuan or those with between 500-2,000yuan. Those with the average monthly household income below 500 yuan showed the lowest ranking in the impulse buying. In other areas of purchase motivation, average monthly household income was not an important element. A meaningful difference showed in 4 areas, 'to try a new trend, impulse buying from a store display, discount advertising', and 'for a change of mood' in the product motivation based on expense on clothing. Respondents with an average monthly expense for clothing above 100 yuan showed a higher ranking in all 4 areas than those with less than 100 yuan. In other areas, the average monthly clothing expense didn't give any impact.

  • This study deals with the friction and wear characteristics of C-N coated SCM415 steel. The PSII(plasma source ion implantation) apparatus was built and a SCM415 test piece with steel substrate was treated with carbon nitrogen by this apparatus. The composition and structure of the surface layer were analyzed and compared with that of PVD(physical vapor decomposition) coated TiN layer. It was found that both of friction coefficient of C-N coating and TiN coating decreased with increasing load, however, C-N coating showed relatively lower faction coefficient than that of TiN coating. The micro-vickers hardness of C-N film is 3200 Hv, which is $32\~43\%$ higher than that of TiN film. The critical load of C-N film is 52N, which is $25\%$ higher than that of TiN film. The hardness of C-N film fabricated by Plasma ion implantation is $61\~70\%$ higher than that of base material, and faction coefficient is $14\~50\%$ lower than that of base material. It is also interesting to note that the friction was changed from adhesive wear mode to light oxidizing wear mode.

  • The subjects of this study were 258 Korean-Chinese parent-child dyads of an elementary school in Yanbian Province, northeastern China. Research questions covered relationships among children's school adjustment and ecological factors, significance of factors within ecological levels, and direct and indirect effects in causal relationships. Results showed significant effects within each ecological level. Achievement motivation of the individual system, home environment and social support of the microsystem, and mother's job satisfaction in the exosystem had significant relationships with children's school adjustment. Mother's education and job satisfaction influenced school adjustment through home environment; the causal relationship between social support and school adjustment was mediated by achievement motivation. Personal and general factors from each ecological level were more significant than ethnic related factors in explaining children's school adjustment.

  • We investigated a small-scale serological survey to screen tissue-parasitic helminthiases of North Koreans as one of research programs for re-unification of Korea. Soil-transmitted helminthiases were found highly prevalent among North Korean residents at the border with China. ELISA using 4 tissue-parasitic helminth antigens was applied to 137 residents living in Cheongjin-shi, Hamgyeongbuk-do, North Korea and 133 female refugees in South Korea in 2004-2005. Among a total of 270 samples, 31 (11.5%), 25 (9.3%), and 11 (4.1%) were positive for specific IgG antibodies to antigens of Clonorchis sinensis, Taenia solium metacestode, and sparganum, respectively. The overall positive rate was 21.5%; 38.2% in males and 15.8% in females. The present finding suggests that tissue parasites, such as C. sinensis, T. solium metacestode and sparganum are highly prevalent in some limited areas of North Korea. These foodborne tissue-parasitic helminthiases should be considered for future control measures of parasitic diseases in North Korea.

  • This paper treats with transitional development of medico-hygienical situation in district Yanbian along with the evolution in specific field of medicine. This work is particularly important in shaping TKM identity as TCM embraces Chao medicine asserting it as one included in TCM. This research deals with themes of migration of Chao minorities to this territory and their medico-hygienical situation. Lifted bans on immigration in late Qing dynasty with uncertainty of Korea(Chosun) triggered the immigration to this district. The flow was heavily strengthened under the influence of Westerners and Japanese imperialism into china which consequently provoked the ruin of Qing dynasty, the civil war between republicans and communist and the socio-political changes in Korea. As population growths, the establishment of hospitals and immigration of healthcare professionals were also increased. Though this district is located in Chinese mainland the influence of Japanese was also relevant which lead to medical practice reflecting both sides. Mutual combination and influence of western(contemporary) medicine, TCM and TKM practices made the particularity of Chao medicine.
