The nano-sized Ce-doped YAG(Yttrium Aluminum Garnet, $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$) phosphor powders were prepared by combustion method from a mixed aqueous solution of metal nitrates, using citric acid as a fuel. The luminescence formation process and structure of phosphor powders were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and PL. The XRD patterns show that YAG phase can form at all of the $Ce^{3+}$ concentration. However, when $Ce^{3+}$ concentration is over 2.0mol%, XRD patterns show $CeO_2$ peak between (321) peak and (400) peak. The pure crystalline YAG:Ce with uniform size of 30nm was obtained at 0.6mol% of the $Ce^{3+}$ concentration. The crystalline YAG:Ce powders showed broad emission peaks in the range 475~630nm and had maximum intensity at 526nm.
YAG:Ce yellow phosphor particles were synthesized by spray pyrolysis with changing the solution properties and their luminous properties, crystal structure, and morphological changes were studied by using PL measurement, XRD, and SEM analysis. It was clear that the solution properties significantly affected the crystal phase, crystallite size, the PL intensity, and the morphology of YAG:Ce particles. At low calcination temperature, the addition of urea only to the spray solution was helpful to form a pure YAG phase without any impurity phases, as the result, the highest luminescence intensity was achieved at the calcination temperature of $900^{\circ}C$. When the calcination temperatures were larger than $1300^{\circ}C$, however, the YAG particles prepared without any additive showed the highest luminescent intensity. Regardless of the solution conditions, the emission intensity of YAG:Ce particles prepared by spray pyrolysis showed a linear relation with the crystallite size. In terms of the morphology of YAG:Ce particles, the addition of both DCCA and $NH_4OH$ to the spray solution was effective to prepare a spherical and dense structured YAG particles.
Ce-doped $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ (YAG:Ce) phosphor powder was prepared using a ${NO_3}^-$-malonic acid-$NH_4NO_3-NH_3{\cdot}H_2O$ system. The YAG:Ce precursor was ignited at $240^{\circ}C$ and the resulting powder contained YAG:Ce crystallites (42%) - active in the visible region at 460 nm - amorphous particles (53%) - inactive at visible wavelengths - and less than 3% oxide (3%) crystallite impurities. The impurities transformed to acitive YAG:Ce crystallites at above $800^{\circ}C$. At above $1000^{\circ}C$, the amorphous phase became YAG phase and isolated $Ce_2O$ crystallites emerged. The powder particles comprised < $4{\mu}m$ secondary aggregates of 20 nm primary particles. The thermal dusting of the secondary particles coincided with the aggregation of the secondary particles at above $900^{\circ}C$.

In this study, spherical monodispersed cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG : $Ce^{3+}$) phosphor particles were synthesized via homogeneous precipitation method using the mixed solution of yttrium nitrate, cerium nitrate, aluminum nitrate, ammonium aluminum sulfate, and urea as a precipitant. During the process of precursors of monodispersed YAG : $Ce^{3+}$, aluminum ions which form spherical aluminum compounds precipitated first and yttrium compounds precipitated onto the surface of the existing spherical aluminum compounds. Drying process using lyophilization could obtain monodispered spherical YAG : $Ce^{3+}$ particles compare to using oven. The thermal calcination process of YAG : $Ce^{3+}$ precursors under the temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ for 6 h was enough to obtain 400~500 nm sized YAG particles with pure YAG phase.

The Ce-doped YAG(Yttrium Aluminum Garnet, $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$) phosphor powders were synthesized by combustion method. The luminescence, formation process and structure of phosphor powders were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and PL. The XRD patterns show that YAG Phase can form through sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. This temperature is much lower than that required to synthesize YAG phase via the conventional solid state reaction method. There were no intermediate Phases such as YAP(Yttrium Aluminum Perovskite, $YAlO_3$) and YAM(Yttrium Aluminum Monoclinic, $Y_4Al_2sO_9$) observed in the sintering process. The powders absorbed excitation energy in the range $410{\sim}510\;nm$. Also, the crystalline YAG:Ce showed broad emission peaks in the range $480{\sim}600\;nm$ and had maximum intensity at 528 nm.
YAG:Ce phosphor were prepared in a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) using a $1.5Y_2O_3+2.5Al_2O_3+0.116CeO_2+3.0KClO_3+kCO(NH_2)_2+m(C_2F_4)_n$ precursor mixture. The heat for the combustion propagation was provided by the reaction of a $KClO_3+CO(NH_2)_2+(C_2F_4)n$ mixture. Pure-phase YAG phosphor was synthesized at the combustion temperature of $1210^{\circ}C$ from k=3.6 mole and m=0.3 mole. The as-prepared YAG:Ce phosphor had a particle size of $2-10{\mu}m$. The addition of Teflon to the precursor mixture increased the YAG particle size and its luminescent intensity. The emission peak of the YAG phosphor was blue-shifted with an increase of Teflon concentration.

For white light emitting diode (LED) applications, it has been reported that Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce) in nano-sized phosphor performs better than it does in micro-sized particles. This is because nano-sized YAG:Ce can reduce internal light scattering when coated onto a blue LED surface. Recently, there have been many reports on the synthesis of nano-sized YAG particles using bottom-up method, such as co-precipitation method, sol-gel process, hydrothermal method, solvothermal method, and glycothermal method. However, there has been no report using top-down method. Top-down method has advantages than bottom-up method, such as large scale production and easy control of doping concentration and particle size. Therefore, in this study, nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors were synthesized by a high energy beads milling process with varying beads size, milling time and milling steps. The beads milling process was performed by Laboratory Mill MINICER with ZrO2 beads. The phase identity and morphology of nano-sized YAG:Ce were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. By controlling beads size, milling time and milling steps, we synthesized a size-tunable and uniform nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors which average diameters were 100, 85 and 40 nm, respectively. After milling, there was no impurity and all of the peaks were in good agreement with YAG (JCPDS No. 33-0040). Luminescence and quantum efficiency (QE) of nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors were measured by fluorescence spectrometer and QE measuring instrument, respectively. The synthesized YAG:Ce absorbed light efficiently in the visible region of 400-500 nm, and showed single broadband emission peaked at 550 nm with 50% of QE. As a result, by considering above results, high energy beads milling process could be a facile and reproducible synthesis method for nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors.

For this study, Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) particles co-doped with $Ce^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$ were prepared via the combustion process using the 1:1 ratio of metal ions to reagents. The characteristics of the synthesized nano powder were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL). The various YAG peaks, with the (420) main peak, appeared at all Eu concentrationin XRD patterns. The YAG phase crystallized with results that are in good agreement with the JCPDS diffraction file 33-0040. The SEM image showed that the resulting YAG:Ce,Eu powders had uniform sizes and good homogeneity. The grain size was about 50nm. The photoluminescence spectra of the YAG:Ce,Eu nanoparticles were investigated to determine the energy level of electron transition related to luminescence processes. It was composed a broad band of $Ce^{3+}$ activator into the weak line peak of $Eu^{3+}$ in YAG host. The PL intensity of $Ce^{3+}$ has the wavelengths of 480-650 nm and The PL intensity of $Eu^{3+}$ has main peak at 590nm.

In this study, phosphor ceramics were fabricated, and optical properties were analyzed for application to nextgeneration automotive laser headlamps by using a spherical YAG : Ce phosphor with a garnet structure synthesized based on the spray drying method. The thickness of phosphor ceramic using spherical YAG : Ce phosphor was obtained with 100 ㎛, 150 ㎛, and 200 ㎛ to investigate the effect of thickness on optical properties such as light conversion efficiency, heat dissipation, luminance and color temperature. The results of this study are expected to play a significant role in the manufacturing process for the fabrication of phosphor ceramic by solving issues such as the high cost and low yield in the conventional liquid method to manufacture YAG : Ce nano fluorescent materials.
The effect of $BaF_2$ flux in $Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$(YAG:Ce) formation was investigated. Phase transformation of $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$(YAG) was characterized by using XRD, SEM, and TEM-EDS, and it was revealed that the sequential formation of the $Y_4Al_2O_9$(YAM), $YAlO_3$(YAP) and $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$(YAG) in the temperature range of 1000-1500$^{\circ}C$. Single phase of YAG was revealed from 1300$^{\circ}C$. In order to find out the effect of $BaF_2$ flux, three modeling experiments between starting materials (1.5$Al_2O_3$-2.5$Y_2O_3$, $Y_2O_3$-$BaF_2$, and $Al_2O_3$-$BaF_2$) were done. These modeling experiments showed that the nucleation process occurs via the dissolution-precipitation mechanism, whereas the grain growth process is controlled via the liquid-phase diffusion route. YAG:Ce phosphor particles prepared using a proposed technique exhibit a spherical shape, high crystallinity, and an emission intensity. According to the experimental results conducted in this investigation, 5% of $BaF_2$ was the best concentration for physical, chemical and optical properties of $Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$(YAG:Ce) that is approximately 10-15% greater than that of commercial phosphor powder.
