  • This study surveys the warp and weft tension differences between projectile and air-jet looms and analyses the mechanical properties of worsted fabrics for garment with relation of these loom characteristics using KES-FB system. The paper is divided by two parts. In the 1st paper, the worsted fabric is woven as 5 harness satin weave using 1/40 Nm sirofil worsted warp yarn and 1/30 Nm worsted weft yarn by projectile(Sulzer) and air-jet looms(Picanol PAT and OMNI), respectively. The weavability is also analysed by measuring warp tension variation according to the warp position and weft tension of 3 kinds of looms. The relationship between shed amount and the warp tension is surveyed, and the relationship between end breaks and warp and weft tensions is also discussed.

  • Rapid flow advancement without void formation is essential in the liquid composite molding (LCM) such as resin transfer molding (RTM) and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). A highly permeable layer in multi-layered preform has an important role in improvement of the flow advancement. In this study, a multi-layered preform which consists of three layers is employed. Radial flow experiment is carried out for the multi-layered preform. A new analytic model for advancement of flow front is proposed and effective permeability is defined. The effective permeability for the multi-layered preform is obtained analytically and compared with experimental results. Compaction test is performed to determine the exact fiber volume traction of each layer in the multi-layered preform. Transverse permeability employed in modeling is measured experimentally unlike the previous studies. Accurate prediction of flow advancement is of great use for saving the processing time and enhancing product properties of the final part.

  • A methodology for the objective evaluation of water repellency is studied using image analysis of the sprayed pattern on woven fabrics according to a standard spray test (AATCC Test Method 22-2001). The wet area ratio obtained from the spray standard test ranking is found to be exponentially related with its water repellency rating. Mean filtering is used to remove the effect of weave texture and the transmitted light through interyarn spaces. The ring frame of the instrument and wet region are recognized using Otsu thresholding technique. And Hough transform and outline operation are used to obtain the size and position of the ring frame. The objective assessment of the water repellency using image processing can reduce unnecessary confusion in the subjective determination of the water repellency.

  • Fatigue cracked components often needs to be repaired during service. Standard repair schemes involve strengthening the component by connecting reinforcing members by means of rivets or welding by reducing the crack-tip stress intensity factors. Recent technological advances in fiber reinforced composite materials and adhesive bonding have led to the development of efficient repair schemes. In this study, the influence of various shape parameters on fatigue crack growth in the CCT type uniform thickness plates and the thin-ta-thick type stiffened panels repaired with woven fabric type Kevlar-Epoxy composite patch are studied experimentally.

  • A new textile metal matrix composite fur electronic packaging was developed and characterized. The thermal management materials consist of a plain woven carbon fabric as reinforcement and pure aluminum as matrix. The finite element method has been utilized in the analysis of thermal stress between the constituent components of packaging. The prototype part was manufactured by the liquid pressurizing method. The composite has CTE values of 4 to $5{\times}10^{-6}\;^{\circ}C^{-1}$10 in the range of $25^{\circ}C$ ~ 175$^{\circ}C$, resulting in good agreement with electronic materials such as Si and GaAs.

  • The three-dimensional woven fabric C/SiC composites blisk turbine rotor model was evaluated. The spin tests of the blisk model were performed to measure strain distributions at the room temperature. The rotational strength of the blisk model could be improved by the fiber addition. But, there are still more researches to be done.

  • Glass/phenolic composite laminates have been used in the field of non-flammable light rail transit and their applications have expanded more widely. Low velocity impact tests have been used to evalute the effect of temperature and acceleration aging on low velocity impact response of phenolic matrix composites reinforced with woven E-glass fabric. The damage of matrix cracking and delamination are suddenly reduced the compressive strength after impact. The damage area increases with increasing temperature and impact energy. UT C-scan is used to determine damage areas by impact loading. Therefore, all this observations indicate reduced impact damage resistance and damage tolerance of the laminates at elevated temperature.

  • Fabric current collector can be a promising electrode material for Capacitive Deionization (CDI) system that can achieve energy-efficient desalination of water. The one of the most attractive feature of the fabric current collector is its high tensile strength, which can be an alternative to the low mechanical strength of the graphite foil electrode. Another advantage is that the textile properties can easily make shapes by simple cutting, and the porosity and inter-fiber space which can assist facile flow of the aqueous medium. The fibers used in this study were made of woven structures using a spinning yarn using conductive LM fiber and carbon fiber, with tensile strength of 319 MPa, about 60 times stronger than graphite foil. The results were analyzed by measuring the salt removal efficiency by changing the viscosity of electrode slurry, adsorption voltage, flow rate of the aqueous medium, and concentration of the aqueous medium. Under the conditions of NaCl 200 mg/L, 20ml/min and adsorption voltage 1.5 V, salt removal efficiency of 43.9% in unit cells and 59.8% in modules stacked with 100 cells were shown, respectively. In unit cells, salt removal efficiency increases as the adsorption voltage increase to 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 V. However, increasing to 1.6 and 1.7 V reduced salt removal efficiency. However, the 100-cell-stacked module showed a moderate increase in salt removal efficiency even at voltages above 1.5 V. The salt removal rate decreased when the flow rate of the feed was increased, and the salt removal rate decreased when the concentration of the feed was increased. This work shows that fabric current collector can be an alternative of a graphite foil.

  • The study was performed to evaluate thermal insulation covering materials (TICMs) to protect peach trunks against freezing temperatures in winter season by investigating thermo-physical properties and practical thermal insulation effect of the TICMs which was made of white non-woven fabrics, yellow paper sheets, and waterproof fabric pads. Among the three TICMs, Waterproof fabric pad (double layer) possessed the best performance about thermal insulation rate and thermal resistance among three kinds of TICMs. Day thermal insulation effects of waterproof fabric pad, which prevent from temperature rise on the bark tissues of trunks during the day time, were $14.09^{\circ}C$. Night thermal insulation effects of them, which prevent from temperature decline on the bark tissues of trunks at night time, were $7.23^{\circ}C$. Waterproof fabric pad showed the highest day and night thermal insulation effects. Thus our results suggest that development of TICMs using waterproof fabric pad might be helpful to protect the bark tissues of trunks from freezing injury.
