  • Prophylactic antibiotics in acute nonperforated appendicitis have been used for preventing infection after appendectomy. However, duration of antibiotic administration for surgical prophylaxis in Korea has been noted to be longer than those recommended in other countries. The objective of this study was to identify appropriate duration of prophylactic antibiotics in acute nonperforated appendicitis by comparing two different antibiotic regimens for their wound infection rates. Eighty-four acute nonperforated appendicitis patients were enrolled in this prospective, randomized, open trial and were assigned to one of two antibiotic regimens: cefoxitin 1 g every 8 hours given intravenously for 24hours or cefoxitin 1 g every 8 hours given intravenously plus sisomicin 75 mg every 12 hours given jntramuscularly for 72 hours. First doses were given just prior to the induction of anesthesia. Postoperative wound infections were detected in $4.8\%$ of the 72-hour-treated group (n=42), whereas none occurred in the 24-hour-treated group (n=42). However, the difference in the rates of wound infections between two groups was not statistically significant. The most frequently isolated microorganism from appendiceal tissues was E coli. In conclusion, administration of cefoxitin alone for 24 hours is sufficient as surgical prophylaxis in nonperforated appendicitis.

  • Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) is known to accelerate wound healing process by acting on specific adenosine receptors. Differently from the PDRN substances obtained so far from piscine tissues, unique PDRN was prepared recently from Porphyra, a seaweed species. In this study, effects of the Porphyra PDRN was evaluated by inducing artificial skin wounds in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. The wound recovered almost completely in 2 weeks without any treatment, however only a partial recovery was done after one week. Facilitated healing was observed by PDRN fed for 5 days before wound induction at 10 or 20 mg/kg, against the partially recovered 1-week old wound. The healing effects were identified not only by visual observation, wound area measurement, but also by colorimetric estimations. These novel wound healing effects suggest beneficial therapeutic utility of Porphyra-derived PDRN for wound treatments in fishes occurring from various causes.

  • Most modern wind turbines employ a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) system due to its many advantages, such as variable speed operation, relatively high efficiency, and small converter size. The DFIG system uses a wound rotor induction machine so that the magnetizing current of the generator can be fed from both the stator and the rotor. We propose a protection algorithm for a DFIG based on a d-q equivalent circuit in the time domain. In the DFIG, the voltages and currents of the rotor side and the stator side are available. The proposed algorithm estimates the instantaneous induced voltages of magnetizing inductance using those voltages and currents from both the stator and the rotor sides. If the difference between the two estimated induced voltages exceeds the threshold, the proposed algorithm detects an internal fault. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified under various operating and fault conditions using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator.

  • .The healing of a bone defect is complex, and involves a wide range of cellular, molecular, physiological, and biological processes. The main effect of bone substitute is to promote wound healing by induce cell proliferation. Bone defect sites usually are localized below the original bone surface; therefore, space production and maintenance between the membrane and the original bone surface is essential. As a result, membranes must have proper mechanical strength to prevent the collapse of the soft tissue and maintain wound space that permits membranes of poly (L-lactide) (PLLA) were fabricated to provide and maintain sufficient space for bone growth. • In this study, the anti-inflammatory effects of Lespedeza cuneata extract on macrophages and wound-healing in wound-induced animal experiments were investigated. In an anti-inflammatory test, 0.1 mg/mL of Lespedeza cuneata extract did not affect growth of RAW 264.7 cells, and Lespedeza cuneata extract suppressed nitric oxide (NO) generation from inflammation-induced macrophages in a concentration-dependent manner. Wounds on the skin of rats were treated with vehicle containing Lespedeza cuneata extract (SSP), vehicle (SCO), and commercial ointment (CCO). The wound and scar sizes in the SSP group were significantly reduced in comparison to the SCO and CCO groups (P<0.05). The epidermis and dermis of the SSP group also recovered faster than the SCO group based on Masson's trichrome staining. The gene expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) decreased and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-${\beta}1$) increased in wound tissue from the SSP group compared to that from the SCO group. These results show that Lespedeza cuneata extract accelerates wound-healing through anti-inflammatory activity and induction of collagen regeneration as well as reduces the scar area surrounding wounds. Accordingly, Lespedeza cuneata extract could be useful as a cosmeceutical in the cosmetic industry.

  • Colostrum has lots of bioactive components and many growth factors including insulin-like growth factors, transforming growth factors and epidermal growth factor. Colostrum and milk derived growth factors widely mediate the growth of overall development and could be used as treatment of gastrointestinal disorder, wound repair process, bioacrivity in the neonatal GI tract and induction of oral tolerance. It is possible that milk derived growth factors as potential neutraceuticals for the specific consumers may have a great role in future food industry.

  • A flywheel system which can compensate electric power is presented. The designed system has a capability of providing real and imaginary power instantaneously as well as storing energy. In this paper, a control algorithm is designed. The designed algorithm is to control the secondary side current of the wound rotor induction motor using voltage-based PWM inverter. The flywheel system has advantages in converter size and power quality improvement comparing to the conventional system.

  • This paper investigates the light output characteristics of an electrodeless H-discharge lamp. The existing cylindrical fluorescent lamps were wound around with an induction coil of varying size, and were driven by RF power. The light output and the luminous efficacy were measured according to variations of the induction coil gap and the lamp power, respectively. The experimental results show that the luminous efficacy of the lamp is as much as existing electrodeless lamps and the luminous efficacy of lamps are high between 10W and 20W. Theoretical analyses using computer simulation show that the circuit matching is easier in the external coil configuration than in the internal one, and that the current and the power distributions near the coil are shower in t.

  • The wave power plant is a generating system to convert the wave energy resources to electric energy. ´CHUJEON A´, which is a prototype of wave power plant developed by KORDI(Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute), has been launched for its performance test. A wound rotor induction machine is adopted as a generator for the power plant to acquire constant frequency and voltage over wide range of rotor speed. Because the generator of ´CHUJEON A´ has no connection to the power grid line on land, all of the processes to generate and consume the electricity have to be conducted on the floating plant. This paper deals with the design and implementation of the unmanned control system for ´CHUJEON A´. The system includes generator control system, power conversion and charging system, data acquisition and wireless communication system ...
