A Study on Knowledge, Attitude, toward Patient Safety and Patient Safety Care Activities among Long-Term Care Hospitals' Nursing Assistants (요양병원 간호보조인력의 환자안전에 대한 지식, 태도 및 환자 안전활동)

  • This study investigated knowledge and attitudes of long-term care hospital nursing assistants such as nursing aides and direct care workers toward patient safety and their safety care activities. This was a descriptive study that attempted to enhance the competence of nursing assistants' patient safety management, and the data were used to develop a training program for nursing assistants. A total of 230 nursing assistants working at six hospitals whose wards were over 200 participated and were assessed with a rating 1 or 2 in 2013 in B city. Data were collected using questionnaires from March 2 to March 26 in 2017. The collected data were analyzed by the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program using number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. In conclusion, the findings show that patient safety care activities were better performed by nursing aides than direct care workers. Higher education and a higher number of patient safety training programs and patient safety care activities were frequent. In addition, nursing assistants' knowledge of patient safety affected attitudes toward patient safety, and attitudes affected patient safety care activities. Therefore, an actual regular training program for patient safety should be executed over five times a year to improve patient safety perception. Furthermore, a hospital system including adequate working time needs to be improved. Based on the results of the study, patient safety in long-term care hospitals should be improved, and this study could be utilized as basic data to develop a training course for improvement of knowledge and attitudes of nursing assistants toward patient safety.

The Caregiver's Knowledge and Practice about Preventive Behavior for Urinary Tract Infection in Long-term Care Facilities (노인요양시설 요양보호사의 요로감염 예방행위에 대한 지식과 실천)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey the knowledge and practice about preventive behavior for urinary tract infection in caregivers, and ultimately to provide the basic information in terms of urinary tract infection prevention. Participants in this study were caregivers who working at the 7 long-term care facilities in J-city of South Korea. Total 198 were participated in this study. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and scheffe test were performed using SPSS Windows for 21.0 program. The correct answer rate for the knowledge about preventive behavior of urinary tract infection was 79%. The practice of urinary tract infection preventive behavior were significantly differed by the number of nurses, the number of elderly, working time and the experience, perceived importancy, necessity with education for urinary tract infection. The preventive behavior for urinary tract infection in caregivers should be supervised by health care providers. Moreover, it should be needed to educate and apply the basic education program to improve the caregivers' knowledge and practice for preventive behavior in urinary tract infection by healthcare providers. Continuous infection monitor and education by healthcare providers can be contributed the quality of elderly caring services and development of monitoring system for urinary tract infection in long-term care facilities.

Research into Clinical Nurses' Knowledge, Importance and Perception of Diabetes Mellitus (임상 간호사의 당뇨병에 대한 지식, 중요도 및 인지도 조사)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the clinical nurses' knowledge of DM and diabetes patient education aptitude so as to provide a basis for clinical nurse training with respect to diabetes patient education program. The data has been collected through the questionnaires of 42 items from the Knowledge on DM and each 16 item from the Importance on the elements of diabetes patient and the Recognition for clinical nurses, respectfully. 166 nurses from a general hospital who had participated in clinical nurse training in Sep. 28 and Oct. 4, 2001 were subject to respond the questionnaires. Analysis has been done by using statistical method such as percentage, average, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test and Pearson correlation coefficients. The findings are as follows: 1. Clinical nurses' knowledge levels of diabetes 1) The average level of nurses' knowledge about diabetes is 29.37 (right answer- finding rate: 70%), which is intermediate. 2) Amongst the nurses classified by their knowledge levels about diabetes, the group with less than one year career and that with more than 5 year careers are found to have higher knowledge levels. The item with the highest right answer-finding rate was 'Please find the wrong out of the following examples about foot care'. Meanwhile, the item with highest incorrect answer-finding rate was 'what does blood sugar control aims for amongst gestational diabetes?'. 2. Clinical nurses' importance and perception levels of educational training about diabetes 1) There were no differences amongst nurses' importance level about diabetes. 2) Nurses usually had high scores(4.30) in terms of the items related to the importances about educational training. 3) There were quite high recognitions of general characteristics and symptoms about diabetes, amongst the nurse cohorts working more than one year and less than 5 years, and over 5 years, the group belonging to the internal department, that having the previous experiences of dealing with diabetes, and that having their diabetic relatives and other close people. Meanwhile, strangely, the group who identified themselves as 'not good at treating diabetes' had a high recognition level of educational training about diabetes. 3. Relationship between knowledge levels and importance & perception levels of diabetes 1) The higher knowledge about diabetes nurses had, the more importance they recognized. 2) It is found that there was no relationship between knowledge and perception of diabetes. 3) The more importance about diabetes nurses had, the higher perception they obtained. In conclusion, there is an urgent need for systematic educational programs about diabetes including technical aspects, in order to upgrade and improve nurses knowledge levels. In addition, re-educational training should be provided at regular intervals. Further, we believe the nurses with high knowledge about diabetes and interests in the provision of educations for patients can be far more confident, and in return, patients can have better self-management about diabetes obtained through educations. Based on the above-mentioned findings, we would like to make the suggestion: re-evaluation about nurses' knowledge and cognition levels should be carried out after job training programs about diabetes.

  • Abstract Corporate activities are composed of numerous working processes and during the working flow, various business processes are being created and completed simultaneously. Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) makes the working process simple, yet creates more complicated work structure and therefore, there is an absolute need of efficient management for business processes. The workflow literature has been looking for efficient and effective ways of rediscovering and mining workflow intelligence and knowledge from their enactment histories and event logs. As part of studies to analyze and improve the process, the concepts of 'Process Mining', 'Process re-discovery', 'BPR (Business Process Reengineering)' have appeared and the studies for practical implementation are proactively being done. However, these studies normally follow the approach throughout data warehousing for log data of process instances. It is very hard for these approaches to reflect user's intention to the rediscovering and mining activities. The process instances designed based on the consideration of analysis can make groupings effectively and when the analysis demand of user changes within the analysis domain can also reduce the cost of analysis. Therefore, the thesis proposes a special type of workflow model, which is called a colored workflow model, that is extended from the ICN (information control net) modeling methodology by reinforcing the concept of colored token. The colored tokens represent the conceptual types of constraints and criteria that can be used to classifying and grouping the workflow intelligence and knowledge extracted from the corresponding workflow models' enactment histories and event logs. Through the runtime information of process instances, it makes possible to analyze proactive and user-oriented process with the goal of deriving business knowledge from the beginning of process definition.

Factors Affecting Nurse Clinicians' Knowledge and Attitude of Organs Procurement from Brain Dead Patients (임상간호사의 뇌사자 장기기증에 대한 지식과 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose : This study investigated factors affecting the knowledge and attitude of organ procurement from brain dead patients in nurse clinicians. Methods : A survey was conducted with 160 clinical nurses from a university hospital in Seoul. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, an ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}^{\prime}s$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and a multiple regression analysis were used. Results : The mean score for knowledge of organ procurement from brain dead patients was $12.41{\pm}2.16$ (mean correct answers = 62.1). Factors influencing the knowledge of organ procurement among nurse clinicians were working department (${\beta}=.454$, p < .001), a recent family death (${\beta}=.187$, p = .014), experience recognizing potential brain dead patients (${\beta}=.182$, p = .033), and experience referring to potential brain dead patients (${\beta}=-.192$, p = .048). Conclusion : To ensure effective organ procurement from brain dead patients, it is necessary to continually educate nurse clinicians to improve their attitude and knowledge concerning organ donation.

Nurses′ Knowledge and Attitude to Pain Management in Children (간호사의 아동 통증 중재에 대한 지식 및 태도)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the nurses' knowledge and attitude to pain management in children and explore the status of pain management in clinical practice. Method: The subjects were 131 nurses enrolled in 3 university affiliated hospitals. Questionnaire method was utilized for data collection. Data was analyzed by SPSS statistical program. Result: The result was as follows: 1. The overall mean score of the pain knowledge was 16.88 (58.2%). The percentages of correct response in test subsections were pain assessment 45.5, choice of medication and drug action 48.7, and pain statement 79.6 respectively. 2. 70.3% of the nurses agreed or strongly agreed that the procedural pain should always be eliminated. And, 44.3% of the nurses agreed or strongly agreed that post-operative treatment of pain in children should always aim at eliminating the pain completely. 3. There was a significant relationship between pain attitude and knowledge related facts about pain(r=.217, p<.01). 4. When asked to identify the point of self-reported pain on a 0-10 scale at which the nurse would give medication, point 7 was mostly identified (29%). 5. Only 19.8% of the nurses utilized pain rating scale to assess children's pain. 6. The nonpharmacologic interventions nurses used most were position change, emotional support, and massage. 7. 68.7% of the nurses indicated that they learned about pain management from their current working environment. Also, Mostly helpful resource identified in increasing their pain management knowledge and skills was the continuing education program. Conclusion: The findings showed that there was a need to develop educational program for adequate pain management for children. Further research study is recommended to examine the effectiveness of the intervention methods for children's pain.

Differences in Perception of Information Security Knowledge and Skills Between Academia and Industry (정보보호 전문인력의 소요 지식 및 기술에 대한 산업체와 교육기관의 관점 비교)

  • With increasing interest in information security, many studies have been conducted on cultivation and management of information security manpower. The widespread application of information security made the activity of information security professionals more diverse. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the knowledge and skills that are necessary for information security professionals to carry out their job and we also need to take these into considerations for the development and operation of education programs. In this study, for analyzing the perception gaps of information security knowledge and skills level between academia and industry, we have derived 58 knowledge and skills by conducting the literature review and Delphi method and we also conducted a survey of information security knowledge and skills requirements for information security professionals who are now working in industries and educational organizations. As a result, we analyze the perception gaps between two groups of information security professionals and suggest some guidelines for establishing the demand-based curriculum for training information security professionals.

A Study on Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior for Radiation Protection of Nurses : Focus on the Operating Rooms and Intensive Care Units (간호사의 방사선 방어 지식, 태도 및 행위에 관한 연구 : 수술실과 중환자실 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of radiation protection in operating room and intensive care unit nurses. The Participants for this study consisted of 240 nurses working in operating rooms and intensive care units of 7 general hospitals located in Busan, South Korea. The data were collected from Feb. 15 to Feb. 29, 2016. The study results were as follows. First, 72.9% of the nurses had never been educated for radiation safety. Second, the mean score of knowledge for radiation protection was 9.21. The knowledge score of radiation safety educated nurses is higher than uneducated of nurses(t=-5.67, p<.001). Third, The mean score of attitude towards radiation protection was 41.80. The attitude score of radiation safety educated nurses is lower than uneducated of nurses(t=0.02, p<.030). Fourth, the mean score of behavior for radiation protection was 32.57. The behavior score of radiation safety educated nurses is higher than uneducated of nurses(t=0.35, p=.001). Consequently, it was found that nurses had lack of the radiation safety education. Overall knowledge and behavior towards radiation protection was low. Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness of radiation protection and to educate, manage, and improve processes to increasing compliance with protective measures against radiation.

A study on oral health knowledge and behavior of mothers of children attending kindergartens and child care facilities in some parts of Chungnam (충남 일부지역유치원 및 보육시설 아동 어머니의 구강보건 지식과 행동에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives : Since most oral diseases are not life threatening, it can be assumed that an individual's behavior to maintain one's oral health is most likely influenced by one's oral health knowledge. Methods : Mothers whose children are attending five kindergartens and child care facilities in the city of Danjin, Chungnam were selected as subjects of this study. Out of a total of 230 questionnaires collected. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 1 to April 30, 2012. The data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 (SPSS 19.0 K for window, SPSS Inc, USA) with the level of significance as 0.05. Results : 1. Most of the participants correctly answered questions on the oral health knowledge with a mean of 7.37 out of 9. 2. In the section of caring a child's oral health behavior, 'caring a child to brush his or her teeth three times a day' had the highest score of 3.45 out of 5. 3. Looking at caring a child's oral health behavior and a mother's oral health knowledge by general characteristics of mothers, there were no significant differences based on the mother's age, whether a mother is currently working or not, her level of education, and her monthly average income. Conclusions : Based on the above results, we can draw a conclusion that the lower the difference between the rate of correct answers and that of incorrect answers on mother's oral health knowledge to her child, the higher the mother's score of caring her child's oral health behavior, leading to better caring.

HACCP Performance of Employees in School Foodservice Operations and the Related Variables

  • The purpose of this study was to assess current food-handling practices of employees in school food service settings, as well as their knowledge levels, and identify relationships between knowledge, practices, and influencing variables. The survey was conducted for dietitians and employees in the school foodservice industry in Gyeongsangbuk-do province. A total of 270 and 570 questionnaires for dietitians and employees, respectively, were distributed by mail. Response rates were $62\%$ (N=171) and $66\%$ (N=376) from dietitians and employees, respectively. Data was analyzed using SPSS Windows (version 10.0). Descriptive statistics were used to summarize data. Pearson correlations were applied to test for relationships between knowledge and practice of HACCP principles. Stepwise regression analysis was performed to examine the influence of knowledge, current education guidelines, demographic information (working experience, academic background, and certification for food and cooking), and school characteristics (food production system, service style, and number of meals). School foodservice employees were found to have a significant amount of food safety knowledge ($67.5\pm1.8$ out of 100 possible points). Proper food handling practices were not always being followed in many schools. The relationship between their knowledge, current HACCP education training, and food handling practices was not significant. These results suggested the present situation of HACCP trainings performed by dietitians were inadequate for many school foodservice operations. The number of meals in school was an independent predictor of the employees' food-handling practices. These results suggest that an effective education program should integrate endeavors that take account of social and environmental influences on food safety to support the improvement of food-handling practices and the implementation of a HACCP program. Furthermore, dietitians should continue to provide consulting, training, and technical assistance to schools on HACCP implementation.
