  • Workflow means the automation of a business process, in which documents, information or tasks are transferred among participants for business action according to a set of procedural rules, and workflow management system is a system which defines, creates and manages the execution of workflow running one or more workflow engines. In this research, necessity of standardizing current workflow systems is recognized, and problems such as interoperability of current systems, dynamic adaptation to changing business environment and lacking of assessment, management and auditing of business processes are analyzed so that the design and implementation of a workflow system is focused on to offer a solution to the problems. The system is designed and implemented to change dynamically on Run-Time the processes definition defined on Build-Time, and interoperability is enabled by developing workflow engine and related modules based on the WfMC specifications and APIs.

  • In this paper, an adaptive workflow management system, called K-WFMS, is proposed. The K-WFMS integrates database system and knowledge-based system to automate business processes that are executed with complex and various business rules such as task scheduling, role resolution, and exception handling rules. The K-WFMS is adaptable in the sense that it allows its users to change workflow schema in the course of workflow execution as well as it provides rule-based modeling constructs to handle predictable exceptions during workflow modeling. The overall architecture and implementation of K-WFMS are explained, and the change propagation mechanism to maintain validity of workflow model is suggested.

  • This paper introduces a novel method of partitioning a cyclic workflow graph into the subgraphs of acyclic flows. The way of iterative classification of nodes according to feedback structures and deriving subgraphs of acyclic flows is described with illustrative examples. The proposed method allows a cyclic workflow model to be analyzed further, if necessary, with several smaller subflows, which are all acyclic.

  • The Evolution of Workflow Managment consists of rhe automation of business procedures or "workflows" during which documents, information or tasks are passed from one participant to another in a way that is governed by rules or procedures. Workflow technologies have evolved from image management system, document management system, relational or object database systems, and electronic mail system. Workflow Management system has the benefits to improve better efficiency, process control, flexibility, business process. Automation of many business processes results in the elimination standdardizing working methods. Consistency in the processes leads to greater predictability in levels of response to customers and software control over processes enables their re-design in line with changing business needs, In this present study, we implement Electronic Approval System which is a kind of Workflow Management system using static and dynamic flow control information on the web environment.

  • Many technical and nontechnical issues hinder enterprise wide workflow management. The most significant technical issue is the inability to deal with the heterogeneity among users, workflow types, and WFMSs. Not all users demand the same workflow functionality, so user interfaces of different levels of sophistication are required. Because workflow types cannot always be fully predefined, they often need to be adjusted or extended during execution. Unlike relational database management systems, however, each WFMS often has differing workflow metamodels. This leads to incompatibility between WFMSs, making integration into an environment comprising many heterogeneous WFMSs a troublesome and sometimes impossible task. Current Workflow system consists mainly of Database system. It contains some problems like that the integration relationship among system processes cant be expressed properly. This research has been focused on two phases that should be considered in the Workflow system. First of all, the first phase is the analysis phase; one of its role is to figure out independent execution task unit(Workflow component). The second phase is design phase that provides with the framework to execute these task units actively. The Workflow component extraction method in the analysis phase uses a analysis method called C-C Net and, in the design phase, the architecture that makes the these Workflow component executed actively is provided. Through this research, each process is divided into a task unit and more effective Workflow system could be formed by executing these units actively. Current system layer calls task units, on the other hand, the Workflow system this research implemented provides with the architecture that places a layer between them that controls task units actively.

  • This paper proposes a policy adjuster-driven Grid workflow management system for collaborative healthcare platform, which supports collaborative heart disease diagnosis applications. To select policies according to service level agreement of users and dynamic resource status, we devised a policy adjuster to handle workflow management polices and resource management policies using policy decision scheme. We implemented this new architecture with workflow management functions based on policy quorum based resource management system for providing poincare geometrycharacterized ECG analysis and virtual heart simulation service. To evaluate our proposed system, we executed a heart disease identification application in our system and compared the performance to that of the general workflow system and PQRM system under different types of SLA.

  • The recent development of information technology has been envisioned as the next technological wave and is expected to play an important role in diminishing boundaries between business organizations. Enterprises have recently resulted in a surge in workflow management, making business processes sharable among different business organizations. To make heterogeneous workflows operational, it is crucial that workflow management systems provide efficient tools for an environment supporting interoperability of business processes among different business organizations. As the potential of workflow management is becoming widely recognized, the demand for an integrated framework that facilitates interoperability among heterogeneous workflows is concomitantly growing. Despite the large body of work in the area of workflow management, few efforts are directed towards identifying conflict patterns for heterogeneous workflow interoperability of inter-organizational business processes. In this paper, we summarize state of the art research trends in workflow management research area and identify conflict patterns for heterogeneous workflows. We believe that this is one of the first attempts to conceptualize conflict patterns that exist on inter-organizational business processes. This paper opens up a novel avenue for workflow management research by supplementing the existing conceptual frameworks for workflow management.

  • Workflow is a collection of tasks organized to accomplish some business processes. It also defines the order of task invocation or conditions under which task must be invoked, task synchronization, and information flow. And activity based costing(ABC) provides accurate cost information for decision making. In ABC systems, costs must be separable into cost pools each of which corresponding to a single cost driver. These two systems are closely related to each other. But recent research deals with workflows and ABC systems separately. Thus, this research proposes an extended workflow model which is expressed cost information using activity based costing.

  • To cope with rapidly changing enterprise environment, many business entities introduce EAI, which integrates applications by installing middleware. But existing EAI has a serious problem that is to import imddleware-dependent coding method to integrate systems, using different middlewares. In this paper, we suggest middleware independent 'Workflow Management System' which efficiently integrates applications of various middleware systems with 'Duplicate EAI Adapter', 'state chart' and 'XML' technology.

  • Workflow management systems (WfMSs) automate and manage workflows, which are implementations of organizational processes operated in process-centric organizations. In this paper, wepropose an algorithm to discover temporal work transference networks from workflow execution logs. The temporal work transference network is a special type of enterprise social networks that consists of workflow performers, and relationships among them that are formed by work transferences between performers who are responsible in performing precedent and succeeding activities in a workflow process. In terms of analysis, the temporal work transference network is an analytical property that has significant value to be analyzed to discover organizational knowledge for human resource management and related decision-making steps for process-centric organizations. Also, the beginning point of implementinga human-centered workflow intelligence framework dealing with work transference networks is to develop an algorithm for discovering temporal work transference cases on workflow execution logs. To this end, we first formalize a concept of temporal work transference network, and next, we present a discovery algorithm which is for the construction of temporal work transference network from workflow execution logs. Then, as a verification of the proposed algorithm, we apply the algorithm to an XES-formatted log dataset that was released by the process mining research group and finally summarize the discovery result.
