This study aimed to identify differences in the level of work-life balance as well as the effect of independent variables, including family (sharing family work, support for working), organization (culture, support services and systems), and community variables (accessibility to and amount of work-life balance programs), on work-life balance in South Korea, Japan, and the U.K. For these purposes, data were collected from 311, 324, and 322 married, working women (from 30 to 50 years of age) from Korea, Japan, and the U.K., respectively. It was consistently shown that U.K. employees scored higher in work-life balance than Korean and Japanese employees. Compared with Japan and the U.K., Korean participants were significantly lower in terms of work-leisure balance and work-self-development balance. The regression analysis revealed that 'sharing family work with partner' was commonly important and a major factor in all three countries. A 'supportive organizational culture' predicted work-life balance for Korean and Japanese participants, while work-life balance programs had a powerful effect on work-life balance only for U.K. participants. In the case of community variables, there were no significant effects for U.K. participants with regard to work-life balance. In contrast, 'the amount of work-life balance programs offered' was shown to affect the work-life balance of Korean working women, while 'accessibility to the programs' was significantly influential in Japan. We interpret these results according to social, economic, political, and psychological factors.
Psychological stress is a growing issue in work stress research because work stressors are closely related to depression; and depression, in turn, decreases organizational effectiveness. Considering such causal relationships of work stress, a comprehensive source to control work stress is needed for worksite mental well-being. This study was conducted to identify how social support at work controlled work stress and which characteristics of social support were effective on work stress reduction. The study participants were 240 workers employed in a public hospital in Georgia, U.S.A self-administered survey was given to employees with their pay slips, and followed by a hospital wide voice reminder for 7 days. Surveys were conducted over a 20-day period. The questionnaires asked about job demands, job control, social support at work, depression, job performance, absenteeism, and demographics. The social support construct was structured on the source of support at work and the kinds of support were provided. Statistical analyses were conducted in the structural equation modeling approach. Social support at work was directly related to high job control, low depression, and high job performance. High score of social support at work were significantly associated with high job control, low depressive symptoms, and high job performance. By source of support, only organizational support was positively related to high job control. Organizational support was more effective than supervisor and coworker support. Any stressors and their outcomes were not differenciated by the kinds of support. This result indicated that job control was influenced more by the source of support than the kinds of support provided at work; and the most efficient source of support was the organization. Organizational support was a strong factor in improving workers" perceived controllability of their jobs from a work stress reduction perspective.tive.
The study aimed to analyze the status quo of manufacturing work environment and the work clothes' clothing comfort and wearer mobility of welding and grinding work processes in the machine and shipbuilding industries in South Korea. A questionnaire survey was conducted for the study, which consisted of questions about work clothes' clothing comfort and wearer mobility according to body parts. The findings derived from the research were: the high impact levels of work environment factors on welding and grinding work processes were noise, metal fragment, superheat, toxic gas, UV ray factors. Subject workers' assessment of work clothes' clothing pressures were in the levels between 3 (i.e. moderate) and 4 (i.e. comfortable) in a range of 5-point scale. The impact levels of wearer mobility factor were high on the work processes of welding and grinding in machine and grinding in shipbuilding. While welding process in shipbuilding showed a 'moderate' wearer mobility level and this was because its work postures were uncomfortable yet the rate of the motion change was low. The consideration to develop the work clothes specialized for certain work processes should include the materials' protecting performance from the hazardous work environment factors; and work clothes' designs that provides workers with maximized clothing comfort and wearer mobility for bending or tilting postures of upper, lower and lateral body parts defined in the study.
Stress is a primary health promotion issue in worksite research because psychological distress is closely related not only to workers health status but also to their job performance. This study identified the work environment and work condition factors affecting workers stress symptoms among the Korean manufacturing factory workers. A total of 7,818 factory workers employed in 1,562 manufacturing companies participated in the Korean nation-wide occupational health survey conducted by the Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency in 2003. Participants were selected by the stratified proportional sampling process by standardized industry classification, company size, and locations. Trained interviewers visited the target companies and interviewed the factory workers randomly selected in each company. Work environments included physical work environments (temperature, noise, hazardous organic compounds, and so on) and psychological work environments (job demands, job control, and social support at work), and work conditions included daily working hour, rest time, and so on. Men were 71.5% and the mean age was 34.0 years old. The average working period in the present company was 6.9 years. The average stress score was 26.2 under the perfect score, 50, which means the moderate level of stress. Perceived stress had significant correlations with young age, poor physical work environment, high fatigue, bad perceived health status, and high job demands in Pearson's simple correlation analysis. Perceived health status and perceived fatigue explained 21% variance of stress symptoms and the work environment factor explained 4.8% of that; however, work condition did not have the sufficient effect. In particular, psychosocial work environment variables (job demand, job control, and social support at work) had a clear effect on stress symptoms rather than the physical work environments. Poor perceived health status, severe perceived fatigue, poor physical work environment, high job demands, low social support, heavy alcohol consumption and little exercise were significantly related to high stress symptoms in the Korean manufacturing workers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of shift work on married nurses' role conflict and job satisfaction. Method: Study subjects consisted of married nurses employed at four general hospitals with over 500 beds located in Seoul and Kyunggi area. The data were collected from March 15th to April 7th, 2004 using the survey and the subjects were asked to reply through self-administrative method. Results: Mean value of role conflict of nurses who worked shift work was measured 3.12 out of 5, and that of nurses who did not was measured 2.98. Mean value of job satisfaction of nurses who worked shift work was measured 2.79 out of 5, and that of nurses who did not was measured 2.86. There was a significant reverse correlation between mean level of role conflict and of job satisfaction. Both groups, nurses who worked shift work and nurses who did not, showed significant reverse-correlation in two areas. In the case of nurses who worked shift work, role conflict not showed a significant correlation. Job satisfaction showed a significant correlation with the plan to work as a nurse and remuneration in the case of nurses who worked shift work. Duty of supporting family was the factor affecting role conflict and measured 4.2% in the case of nurses who worked shift work, and the plan to work as a nurse and the academic background in the case of nurses who did not work shift work. Conclusion: To reduce role conflict and to improve the degree of job satisfaction, there should be taken a measure to improve a financial compensating system for working shift work for nurses who worked shift work, and to help nurses not working shift work to design plans for their job as nurses with stability.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate if workplace bullying and abusive supervision was a correlation as two kinds of workplace violence arouse internet pornography addiction, which influences employees' organizational commitment and work-family conflict. This study explores if perceived organizational support can be an interpersonal factor moderating the relationship between workplace violence and internet pornography addiction. Research design, data, and methodology - Using a survey method, this study distributed the survey to 319 employees working at Korean companies. This study used a series of multiple regression analyses. Result - In the results, the more job-related bullying or abusive supervision people perceive in the workplace, the stronger their internet pornography addiction are Second, the stronger internet pornography addiction people have, the weaker their organizational commitment and the stronger work-family conflict are. Finally, when people have higher POS in workplace, workplace bullying and abusive supervision have weaker impact on their internet pornography addiction. Conclusions - For research contributions, this study introduces internet pornography addiction in the context of workplace and investigate workplace violence as the antecedents of internet pornography. Second, this study suggests and empirically verify that perceived organizational support is an organizational factor moderating the relationship between workplace violence and internet pornography addiction. Practically, corporate executives need to recognize the appearance of workplace violence by monitoring the phenomena of employees' internet pornography addiction. Future studies need to be investigated for other types of addiction.
Recently, most of countries in the world are investing huge amount of capital for the infrastructure of logistics and trying to gain dominating position in logistics. To play the role of important hub in logistics, an efficient, flexible, and fault-tolerant transportation process should be developed. Minimization of transportation cost and timely deliveries in the unpredictable environment are a few of the important issues in logistics. This study suggests a way of transporting goods to destinations at the minimal cost and with the minimal delay by optimally allocating transporting resources. Various attributes in transportation such as due date, priority etc. are also considered. Appropriate transporting resources for each work item is selected by calculating the weighted sum of the cost factor and the delay factor assuming that initial sequences of work items are given. A policy to reallocate transporting resources is also suggested when work items or transporting resources are added or deleted because of accidents or disturbances. This policy provides adaptability to the allocation methodology which enables the system to cope with changing environment by controlling various attributes in transportation. Genetic algorithm is used for this approach.
The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting job stress and relationship between dental hygienists personal characteristics and them. Final purpose of this study provides the basic data of dental hygienists interventions to help dental hygienists' job stress reduction program. Data were drawn from a convenient sample of 401 dental hygienists who were working for dental clinic, general hospitals, and university hospitals in Seoul and Kyungi areas. General special quality distribution of dental hygienist is 25-59 and respondent who work in the dentist's office by maiden less than was most. 2. The dental hygienists' job stress was 2.68, it indicates considerably high compare to normal another groups. 3. 'By work, feel fatigue' appeared highest by 3.60 in 5 points full marks from item of business amount connection stress. 4. Only business amount connection stress was expose that is significant in relation with job stress and individual character type. 5. Age, dependent's number, faith, character type variable appeared to keep in mind for connection factor which influence in job stress. 6. Job stress connection factor by character type was expose by variable savages significant thing 'that do work year all as dental hygienist' in A type.
A nonlinear static procedure considering work-energy principle and global failure mechanism to estimate base shears of reinforced concrete (RC) frame-type structures is presented. The relative energy equation comprising of elastic vibrational energy, plastic strain energy and seismic input energy is obtained. The input energy is modified with a factor depending on damping ratio and ductility, and the energy that contributes to damage is obtained. The plastic energy is decreased with a factor to consider the reduced hysteretic behavior of RC members. Given the pre-selected failure mechanism, the modified energy balance equality is written using various approximations for modification factors of input energy and plastic energy in scientific literature. External work done by the design lateral forces distributed to story levels in accordance with Turkish Seismic Design Code is calculated considering the target plastic drift. Equating the plastic energy obtained from energy balance to external work done by the equivalent inertia forces considering, a total of 16 energy-based base shears for each frame are derived considering different combinations of modification factors. Ductility related parameters of modification factors are determined from pushover analysis. Relative input energy of multi degree of freedom (MDOF) system is approximated by using the modal-energy-decomposition approach. Energy-based design base shears are compared with those obtained from nonlinear time history (NLTH) analysis using recorded accelerograms. It is found that some of the energy-based base shears are in reasonable agreement with the mean base shear obtained from NLTH analysis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to assess emergency room nurses' knowledge and performance of triage nursing. Methods: The instrument was developed through the stages of conceptual construction, item development, and validity and reliability testing. For the validity and reliability testing, data collected from 48 emergency room nurses using questionnaires was analyzed through descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and reliability coefficients. Results: The knowledge part consisted of 30 items in nine areas, and its reliability was low (KR-20 =0.50). The correct-answer rate was 71.8%. The performance section derived from the factor analysis was composed of two factors with nine items in the triage domain and three factors with 12 items in the non triage domain. The explanatory powers of these factors for the domains were 66.1% and 70.4%, respectively. The overall reliability (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$) was .95, and the reliabilities for the two domains were .88 and .91, respectively. The nurses' mean performance level was 3.2(${\pm}0.45$). Conclusion: The specific contents of the triage nursing work were identified from the developed scale; further research is necessary to in order to develop a scale capable of higher reliability and validity.
