The Appearance Management Behaviors and Clothing Benefits Sought according to Body Cathexis and Appearance Interest of High School Students (남녀 고등학생의 신체만족도와 외모관심도에 따른 외모관리행동 및 의복추구혜택)

  • The purposes of this study were to classify high school male and female students according to body cathexis and appearance interest, and understand their appearance management behaviors and clothing benefits sought. The results were as follows : First, the body cathexis of high school students were low, and female students had lower body cathexis than male students especially in the lower halves of bodies. The appearance interests of students were high, but female students had higher appearance interests than male students. Second, male students were classified by body cathexis and appearance interest into three groups with high, middle, and low body cathexis and appearance interest, and most of them belonged to the middle group. Female students were classified into four groups(with high body cathexis and appearance interest, with high body cathexis but low appearance interest, with low body cathexis but high appearance interest, and with low body cathexis and appearance interest) and most of them belonged to the group with low body cathexis but high appearance interest. Third, male students in groups with high and middle body cathexis and appearance interest showed more appearance management behaviors than those in the group with low body cathexis and appearance, while management behavior, followed by the group with low body cathexis but high appearance interest, that with high body cathexis but low appearance interest, and that with low body cathexis and appearance interest. Fourth, female students sought more aesthetics, fashionability, brand, and price in clothing coml)wed to male students. Male students in high and middle groups tended to seek more aesthetics, fashionability, and brand than those in the low group, but all three groups didn't consider price benefit sought. Female students with high body cathexis and appearance interest tended to seek more aesthetics and fashionability than those in other three groups. And only the group with low body cathexis and appearance interest didn't consider brand benefit sought. All four groups were found to consider price benefit sought. I hope that results of this study help teachers to guide students' clothing life more positively by understanding their appearance management behaviors and clothing benefits sought than to control negatively.

Development and Evaluation of Alternative Nutrition Signposting Concepts (알기 쉬운 영양성분 전면표시 시안 개발 및 평가)

  • To promote the adoption of healthier eating patterns, this study was aimed to develop and evaluate alternative front of pack nutrition signposting concepts. Based on previous research, we developed two signposting concepts, Multiple Traffic Light (MTL) and Multiple Traffic Light with % Daily Value (MTL-%DV). The signposts featured three key nutrients, total sugar, saturated fat, and sodium. Actual food packaging with no front of pack signposting (NoSP) was included in the evaluation to act as a benchmark against which to compare the performance of the different signposting options. Using an interviewer administered method, we assessed the degree of understanding and time to interpret on a total of 534 subjects (194 elementary, 108 middle, and 103 high schoolers, 128 adults). In the individual product evaluations, MTL (87.0%) obtained the highest level of correct responses, followed by MTL-%DV (83.1%) and NoSP (52.2%). Except for signposting concepts, age, gender and living area were not associated with the degree of correct responses in multivariate analyses. When used to compare products with different colors of nutrient contents, correct responses were more than 90% for MTL-%DV (91.5%) and MTL (90.3%). The middle and high schoolers revealed the lower likelihood of correct response compared to the other two groups. In case of comparing products with same colors of nutrient contents, the proportion of correct responses was the highest in NoSP (90%), followed by MTL%DV (77.4%) and MTL (48.5%). In terms of time to interpret, MTL-%DV and MTL performed better than NoSP in the individual product evaluation and the comparison of two products with different colors of nutrient contents. NoSP performed the best in the comparison of two products with same colors of nutrient contents. A majority of the participants preferred MTL-%DV (78%) most and thought it the most useful in helping them make healthier food choices. Based on these findings, MTL-%DV was considered to most closely meet the objectives of the initiatives.

Development and validation of an analytical method for nematicide imicyafos determination in agricultural products by HPLC-UVD (HPLC-UVD를 이용한 살선충제 imicyafos의 시험법 개발 및 검증)

  • Imicyafos which is a nematicide for controlling root-knot nematodes has been registered in the Republic of Korea in 2012, and the maximum residue limits of imicyafos are set to watermelon and korean melon as each 0.05 mg/kg. Extremely reliable and sensitive analytical method is required for ensuring food safety on imicyafos residues in agricultural commodities. Imicyafos residues in samples were extracted with acetone, partitioned with hexane and dichloromethane, and then purified with florisil. The purified samples were analyzed by HPLC-UVD and confirmed with LC-MS. Linear range was between 0.1~5 mg/kg with the correlation coefficient ($r^2$) 0.99997. Average recoveries of imicyafos ranged from 77.0 to 115.4% at the spiked levels of 0.02 and 0.05 mg/kg with the relative standard deviations of 2.2~9.6%. Limit of detection and quantification were 0.005 and 0.02 mg/kg, respectively. An inter-laboratory study was conducted to validate the determination method in depth, and the results were satisfactory. All of the validation results revealed that the developed analytical method in this study is relevant for imicyafos determination in agricultural commodities and will be used as an official analytical method.

Life-Sustaining Procedures, Palliative Care, and Cost Trends in Dying COPD Patients in U.S. Hospitals: 2005~2014

  • Purpose: Little is known regarding the extent to which dying patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) receive life-sustaining procedures and palliative care in U.S. hospitals. We examine hospital cost trends and the impact of palliative care utilization on the use of life-sustaining procedures in this population. Methods: Retrospective nationwide cohort analysis was performed using National Inpatient Sample (NIS) data from 2005 and 2014. We examined the receipt of both palliative care and intensive medical procedures, defined as systemic procedures, pulmonary procedures, or surgeries using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision (ICD-9-CM). Results: We used compound annual growth rates (CAGR) to determine temporal trends and multilevel multivariate regressions to identify factors associated with hospital cost. Among 77,394,755 hospitalizations, 79,314 patients were examined. The CAGR of hospital cost was 5.83% (P<0.001). The CAGRs of systemic procedures and palliative care were 5.98% and 19.89% respectively (each P<0.001). Systemic procedures, pulmonary procedures, and surgeries were associated with increased hospital cost by 59.04%, 72.00%, 55.26%, respectively (each P<0.001). Palliative care was associated with decreased hospital cost by 28.71% (P<0.001). Conclusion: The volume of systemic procedures is the biggest driver of cost increase although there is a cost-saving effect from greater palliative care utilization.

Evaluation of Agronomic Characteristics, Nutritional Contents, and Insect Response of the Transgenic Potato Resistant to Glufosinate Ammonium (제초제 저항성 형질전환 감자의 농업적 특성, 영양 성분 및 해충 반응성 평가)

  • The agronomic characteristics, nutritional contents, and insect response of the potato clones transformed with a glufosinate ammonium resistance gene were evaluated. Among the 4 transgenic potato clones, the Bar 3 clone was selected as a promising one for commercialization. The Bar 3 clone showed similar tuber yield capacity but higher herbicide resistance as compared with the non-transgenic potato cv. Dejima. The herbicide resistance of the Bar 3 clone was more than 5 times higher when tested with the herbicide concentration recommended by the producer. The major agronomic characteristics of the Bar 3 clone were not different from those of the non-transgenic Dejima. The annual variation in yields and agronomic characteristics showed similar tendency for 2 years from the third to fourth generation after transformation. The tubers of the Bar 3 clone also showed low occurrence in common scab and physiological disorders such as cracking and secondary growth. But the reasons for such results are yet to be studied. Also, it was considered that the Bar 3 clone have a potential of reducing not only common scab occurrence but also soil erosion during potato cultivation in field. The nutritional contents (mineral compound, vitamin C and amino acid) and response to Spodoptera exigua of the transgenic potato clones were not significantly different.

Resistance of Cucurbits to Podosphaera xanthii Race 1 (Podosphaera xanthii Race 1에 대한 박과 작물의 저항성)

  • This study was conducted to establish an efficient screening method to identify cucurbits resistant to powdery mildew. Powdery mildew fungus was obtained from a single lesion of infected cucumber leaf in 2010 at Daejeon. The fungus was identified as Podosphaera xanthii race 1 based on morphological characteristics and resistance responses of four melon differentials. Development of powdery mildew caused by the fungal isolate on 34 commercial cultivars of cucumber was investigated at three plant growth stages in a greenhouse. The degree of resistance of cotyledons of each cultivar to the fungus was not correlated with that of whole plant, but powdery mildew occurrence in the first true leaf was highly correlated with resistance at the level of the whole plant. Based on these results, the first true leaf of cucurbit cultivars can be used for screening of resistance to powdery mildew. In addition, variation of resistance of commercial 12 cucumber and 26 melon cultivars to the powdery mildew fungus due to different growing seasons was tested. In the case of cucumber, the resistance response in some cultivars was influenced by growing season. The resistant cultivars showed higher resistance in the warm season than in the cool season. By contrast, the resistant melon cultivars demonstrated strong resistance in all the tested growing seasons. Interestingly, the tested powdery mildew pathogen, a member of P. xanthii race 1, was not pathogenic on seven cultivars of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). To follow up on this, diverse race 1 isolates of P. xanthii should be collected and tested.

A Survey on the Recognition of Confectionery Bakers Working in Gyeongnam Province for Food Allergy (식품알레르기에 대한 경남지역 제과제빵 종사자들의 인식도 조사)

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the perception of confectionery bakers working in Gyeongnam province for food allergy and to find ways to improve and manage food allergy in confectionery and bakery. The questionnaire was composed of general questions and other questions related to food allergy in confectionery and bakery, and the questionnaires were distributed to the bakers working in Gyeongnam. Sixty nine of 102 confectioneries and bakeries responded to this study, and 60 (87.0%) out of 69 people were aware or had heard about food allergy. However, 54 (78.3%) out of 69 lacked prior education about the management of food allergy. Fifty one (73.9) of 69 people responded that they strongly considered food allergy in the manufacture of the products, but they were not educated about the management of food allergens and symptoms of food allergy. Confectionery bakers were aware about food allergies, but did not label food allergen on the products and have a specific management for food allergens at the work site. Therefore, it is necessary to educate the confectionery bakers about food allergy and to develop and distribute a manage program of food allergens in the field. The result from the present study could be used as basic data for the investigation of awareness for food allergy of confectionery bakers working in Korea.

Effect of raw soy flour addtion to Jeung-Pyun pizza on fermentation time and viscosity of batters and texture and general desirability of Jeung-Pyun pizza (날콩가루를 첨가한 증편 피자판 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The present study was designed to develop the standardized formula for the preparation Jeung-Pyun with added raw soy flour and to investigate the applicability of Jeung-Pyun as the substitute of regular pizza crust made with wheat flour. The effect of adding raw soy flour at 3%, 5% level on fermentation time and viscosity of batters and texture and general desirability of Jeung-Pyun pizza were also studied. As the level of raw soy flour was increased the time required for 1 st and 2nd fermentation decreased and viscosity of batters increased significantly. Jeung-Pyun crust after steaming found to have appropriate texture and form for a substitute of wheat flour pizza crust. Texture parameters determined by QST showed that Jeung-Pyun crust with added raw soy flour had lower values in hardness, cohesiveness and gumminess without any significant difference. However, chewiness of 5% raw soy flour group was significantly lower than control group. Texture of Jeung-Pyun crust and general desirability of Jeung-Pyun pizza were determined by sensory evaluation. Textural parameters of Jeung-Pyun crust were evaluated on the basis of hardness, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, tenderness and wetness. As a result of sensory evaluation Jeung-Pyun crust made with 5% raw soy flour had significant lower values in hardness, cohesiveness, tenderness and wetness than the control. However, the textural parameters between control and 3 % raw soy flour group were not significantly different. Jeung-Pyun pizza with topping were evaluated by sensory panel. Jeung-Pyun pizza made with 3% raw soy flour received the highest score in apperance and general desirability without any significant difference. 5% raw soy flour group had significantly lower score in general desirability among 3 treatment groups. In conclusion, Jeung-Pyun crust made by traditional Jeung-Pyun preparation method will be a good alternative to replace wheat flour pizza crust. Adding raw soy flour at 3% level did not affect the quality of Jeung-Pyun crust and had an effect of promoting fermentation. Jeung-Pyun Pizza crust was expected to have tender texture and slower retrogradation rate than regular pizza crust with wheat flour.

Evaluation of the dose of 16-MDCT and 64-MDCT in case of Coronary Artery CT Angiography using Thermoluminescence Dosimeter (열형광선량계를 이용한 16-MDCT와 64-MDCT의 관상동맥 CT 혈관조영술 시 선량평가)

  • Coronary artery CT angiography has short scanning length, the exposure dose is high. Therefore, it is required to study on the organ dose when using MDCT. We compared the differences between the absorbed dose and effective dose in the major organs assessing the absorbed dose in the major organs by 16-MDCT and 64-MDCT in the subjects with coronary artery CT angiography, the same protocol by 16-MDCT and 64-MDCT. As a result, the great orders of absorbed dose when conducting coronary artery CT angiography had been shown as heart, stomach, liver, pancreas, kidney, spleen, large intestine, lung, small intestine, thyroid gland, ovary, bladder, and orbit with the absorbed dose distribution of $0.538{\pm}0.026(Mean{\pm}SD,\;p<0.05)mGy{\sim}71.316{\pm}4.316mGy$ in 16-MDCT, and heart, stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver, kidney, small intestine, large intestine, lung, thyroid gland, ovary, bladder, and orbit with the absorbed dose distribution of $0.87{\pm}0.01mGy{\sim}115.26{\pm}1.59mGy$ in 64-MDCT, demonstrating some different distributions. The exposed doses to the patient per one time scanning with coronary artery CT angiography were $71.316{\pm}4.316mGy$ in 16-MDCT as the absorbed dose based on the heart and $115.26{\pm}1.59mGy$ in 64-MDCT. The effective doses were 7.41 mSv and 12.11 mSv in 16 and 64-MDCT, respectively. Taking into account the results of brain CT with 2.8 mSv that has comparatively large scanning length and size, facial CT 0.8 mSv, chest CT 5.7 mSv, pelvic CT 7.2 mSv, and abdominal and pelvic CT 14.4 mSv, it is very high considering the scanning length of 13 cm limited to the heart for the scanning range.

Description and Application of a Marine Microalga Auxenochlorella protothecoides Isolated from Ulleung-do (울릉도 거북바위 조수웅덩이에서 분리된 해양 미세조류 옥세노클로렐라 프로토테코이드 균주의 기술 및 응용)

  • A unicellular green alga was axenically isolated from a tidal pool on Ulleung-do, Korea. Morphological, molecular, and biochemical analyses revealed that the isolate belonged to Auxenochlorella protothecoides. The current study is the first record of this species in Korea. The microalgal strain was named as A. protothecoides MM0011 and its growth, lipid and pigment compositions, and biomass properties were investigated. The strain is able to thrive in a wide range of temperatures ($5{\sim}35^{\circ}C$) and to withstand up to 1.5 M NaCl. The results of GC/MS analysis showed that the isolate was rich in nutritionally important polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Its major fatty acids were linoleic acid (27.6%) and ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid (39.6%). Thus, this indigenous microalga has potential as an alternative source of ${\omega}3$ and ${\omega}6$ PUFAs, which currently come from fish and plant oils. Also, the HPLC analysis revealed that the value-added antioxidant, lutein, was biosynthesized as the accessory pigments by the microalga. A proximate analysis showed that the volatile matter content was 85.6% and an ultimate analysis indicated that the gross calorific value was $20.3MJ\;kg^{-1}$. Since 40.5% of total nitrogen and 27.9% of total phosphorus were removed from the medium, respectively, it also has potential as a feedstock for biofuel applications which could be coupled to wastewater treatment. In addition, the biomass may also serve as an excellent animal feed because of its high protein content (51.4%). Therefore, A. protothecoides MM0011 shows promise for application in production of microalgae-based biochemicals and as a biomass feedstock.
