In this paper, we propose an effective time-of-arrival (TOA)-based localization method with adaptive bias computation in indoor environments. The goal of the localization is to estimate an accurate target's location in wireless localization system. However, in indoor environments, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) errors block the signal propagation between target device and base station. The NLOS errors have significant effects on ranging between two devices for wireless localization. In TOA-based localization, finding the target's location inside the overlapped area in the TOA-circles is difficult. We present an effective localization method using compensated distance with adaptive bias computation. The proposed method is possible for the target's location to estimate an accurate location in the overlapped area using the measured distances with subtracted adaptive bias. Through localization experiments in indoor environments, estimation error is reduced comparing to the conventional localization methods.
The purpose of a localization system is to estimate the coordinates of the geographic location of a mobile device. The accuracy of wireless localization is influenced by nonline-of-sight (NLOS) errors in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we present an improved time of arrival (TOA)-based localization method for wireless sensor networks. TOA-based localization estimates the geographic location of a mobile device using the distances between a mobile station (MS) and three or more base stations (BSs). However, each of the NLOS errors along a distance measured from an MS (device) to a BS (device) is different because of dissimilar obstacles in the direct signal path between the two devices. To accurately estimate the geographic location of a mobile device in TOA-based localization, we propose an optimized localization method with a BS selection scheme that selects three measured distances that contain a relatively small number of NLOS errors, in this paper. Performance evaluations are presented, and the experimental results are validated through comparisons of various localization methods with the proposed method.

The easy scalability and low cost of range-free localization algorithms have led to their wide attention and application in node localization of wireless sensor networks. However, the existing range-free localization algorithms still have problems, such as large cumulative errors and poor localization performance. To solve these problems, an incremental strategy-based residual regression network is proposed for node localization in wireless sensor networks. The algorithm predicts the coordinates of the nodes to be solved by building a deep learning model and fine-tunes the prediction results by regression based on the intersection of the communication range between the predicted and real coordinates and the loss function, which improves the localization performance of the algorithm. Moreover, a correction scheme is proposed to correct the augmented data in the incremental strategy, which reduces the cumulative error generated during the algorithm localization. The analysis through simulation experiments demonstrates that our proposed algorithm has strong robustness and has obvious advantages in localization performance compared with other algorithms.

Localization of sensor nodes is a key technology in Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs). Trilateration is an important position determination strategy. To further improve the localization accuracy, a novel Trilateration based on Point In Triangle testing Localization (TPITL)algorithm is proposed in the paper. Unlike the traditional trilateration localization algorithm which randomly selects three neighbor anchors, the proposed TPITL algorithm selects three special neighbor anchors of the unknown node for trilateration. The three anchors construct the smallest anchor triangle which encloses the unknown node. To choose the optimized anchors, we propose Point In Triangle testing based on Distance(PITD) method, which applies the estimated distances for trilateration to reduce the PIT testing errors. Simulation results show that the PIT testing errors of PITD are much lower than Approximation PIT(APIT) method and the proposed TPITL algorithm significantly improves the localization accuracy.
Sensor localization has become an essential requirement for realistic applications over wireless sensor networks (WSN). In this paper we propose an ad hoc localization algorithm that is infrastructure-free, anchor-free, and computationally efficient with reduced communication. A novel combination of distance and direction estimation technique is introduced to detect and estimate ranges between neighbors. Using this information we construct unidirectional coordinate systems to avoid the reflection ambiguity. We then compute node positions using a transformation matrix [T], which reduces the computational complexity of the localization algorithm while computing positions relative to the fixed coordinate system. Simulation results have shown that at a node degree of 9 we get $90\%$ localization with $20\%$ average localization error without using any error refining schemes.

Localization information of an object can be a very useful element for many application areas. Presently, GPS is typically used for it, but many researches on the wireless localization technology are going on recently actively using mobile communication network, wireless sensor network, and ad hoc network in order to overcome the limitations of the GPS such as indoor, cost, power consumption, and etc. Therefore, this article surveys the most representative wireless localization techniques, which can be deployed in the wireless networks, and their principles and performances are analyzed based on the researched papers. In a conclusion, selection of a localization technique should consider the key design elements to a given application from the design elements such as localization environment, accuracy, time to fix, computation amount, implementation ease, and etc.

Currently several kinds of sensor localization methods have been developed for terrestrial wireless sensor networks. This study, in order to extend the field to underwater environments, a localization technique is studied for UWSNs (Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks). In underwater environments, RF (Radio Frequency) signal is not suitable for underwater usage because of extremely limited propagation. Because of that reason UWSNs should be constituted with acoustic modems. But, to realize underwater application, we can borrow many design principles from ongoing research for terrestrial environments. So, in this paper we introduce the modified localization algorithm using ToA method which is based on the terrestrial research. First of all, we study the localization techniques for terrestrial environments where we investigate possible methods to underwater environment. And then the appropriate algorithm is presented in the underwater usage. Finally the proposed underwater based localization algorithm is evaluated by using computer.

In many wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, the information transmitted by an individual entity or node is of limited use without the knowledge of its location. Research in node localization is mostly geared towards multi-hop range-free localization algorithms to achieve accuracy by minimizing localization errors between the node's actual and estimated position. The existing localization algorithms are focused on improving localization accuracy without considering efficiency in terms of energy costs and algorithm convergence time. In this work, we show that our proposed localization scheme, called DV-maxHop, can achieve good accuracy and efficiency. We formulate the multi-objective optimization functions to minimize localization errors as well as the number of transmission during localization phase. We evaluate the performance of our scheme using extensive simulation on several anisotropic and isotropic topologies. Our scheme can achieve dual objective of accuracy and efficiency for various scenarios. Furthermore, the recently proposed algorithms require random uniform distribution of anchors. We also utilized our proposed scheme to compare and study some practical anchor distribution schemes.
Range-based wireless localization system must measure accurate range between a mobile node (MN) and reference nodes. However, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) error caused by the spatial structures disturbs the localization system obtaining the accurate range measurements. Localization methods using the range measurements including NLOS error yield large localization error. But filter-based localization methods can provide comparatively accurate location solution. Motivated by the accuracy of the filter-based localization method, a filter residual-based NLOS error estimation method is presented in this paper. Range measurement-based residual contains NLOS error. By considering this factor with NLOS error properties, NLOS error is mitigated. Also a process noise covariance matrix tuning method is presented to reduce the time-delay estimation error caused by the single dynamic model-based filter when the speed or moving direction of a MN changes, that is the used dynamic model is not fit the current dynamic of a MN. The presented methods are evaluated by simulation allowing direct comparison between different localization methods. The simulation results show that the presented filter is more accurate than the iterative least squares- and extended Kalman filter-based localization methods.

Accurate locating for the mobile target remains a challenge in various applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Unfortunately, most of the typical localization algorithms perform well only in the WSN with densely distributed sensor nodes. The non-localizable problem is prone to happening when a target moves into the WSN with sparsely distributed sensor nodes. To solve this problem, we propose a collaborative and predictive localization algorithm (CPLA). The Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is introduced to predict the posterior trajectory for a mobile target by training its prior trajectory. In addition, the collaborative and predictive schemes are designed to solve the non-localizable problems in the two-anchor nodes locating, one-anchor node locating and non-anchor node locating situations. Simulation results prove that the CPLA exhibits higher localization accuracy than other tested predictive localization algorithms either in the WSN with sparsely distributed sensor nodes or in the WSN with densely distributed sensor nodes.
