A Study on the OFDM Modem Implementation Using FPGA (FPGA를 이용한 OFDM Modem 구현에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of the OFDM Modem using FPGA. The proposed OFDM method is based on IEEE 802.11a high-speed wireless LAN standard. The proposed and designed Pipeline FFT processor adopt the Radix-$2^2$SDF scheme. This method has a simple architecture and highly increases the calculation speed. And also it decreases the required number of registers. Therefore the proposed OFDM Modem reduces hardware size and improves the calculation speed. The OFDM Modem is implemented using $FLEX^{TM}$ FPGA.

  • OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)is a one of the nst promising digital modulation techniques adapted for Digital audio broadcasting or Digital TV since it is very robust against multipath fading channels. From 1997, since the OFDM technique was considered as the physical layer standard for the high data rate wireless LAN systems in the 5㎓ band, related studies have been studied actively. The key element to implement high data rate wireless LAN system using OFDM technique are IFFT and FFT modules. In this paper, new IFFT and FFT module are designed and implemented using current cut circuit based on the matrix-rounding process for the low-power consumptive operation and high-speed data processing. In addition to, we certify the available operation of the rounded IFFT/FFT module in the AWGN channel by using the BER performance simulation of IEEE 802.11TGa based OFDM modem with rounded IFFT/FFT module.

  • Recently, a few types of fish-cage in open sea are researched. This fish-cage has to operate monitoring system for keeping an optimum living condition for fish. The most efficient monitoring system is WVMS(Wireless Vision Monitoring System) for fish-cage in open sea. WVMS should be able to transmit video signal and communicate with each controller. So. it needs to be based on WLAN(Wireless LAN) which has characteristic of higher transfer-rate, In this paper, we propose a structure of WVMS using WLAN equipments for maritime environment and prove its effectiveness. We present the propagation loss model of WVMS's communication channel. measured by field test, and discuss its validity compared with the predictive value based on the Friss propagation model and Plane earth reflection model. We present the number of frames that is received from WLAN modem connecting with underwater-camera in field test spots. As a result, we confirmed that proposed WVMS is suitable for maritime environment and it is possible to be applied to fish-cage in open sea on 'seogwipo'.

  • 광대역 무선 서비스에 대한 수요가 증가함에 따라 이미 제정되었거나 현재 제정중인 무선 LAN 표준안으로는 ETSI BRAN의 HIPERLAN, IEEE 802.11, MMAC-PC등이 있다 이러한 표준안들은 상위계층은 서로 다른 반면, 5 GHz 대역에서 OFDM 방식을 사용하는 공통된 물리계층을 정의하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이중 HIPERLAN/2 물리계층의 구조 및 파라미터를 설명하고 그 성능을 분석한다.

  • Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technology for high speed multimedia communication in a frequency selective multipath channel. In this paper, Software IPs for the synchronizer of IEEE 802.11a Wireless LAN system are designed and optimized for TI's TMS320C6201 fixed point DSP. As a result of the execution cycles of the target DSP for each functions of the system, an efficient HW/SW partitioning method can be considered.

  • This paper presents the design and implementation of a baseband Modem using DSP that supports a wireless LAN. It is implemented with DSP and D/A and A/D Converters in baseband and tested without using IF and RF modules. In this paper, we have used the matched filler and DLL(delay lock loop) for synchronization. And the matched filter and the carrier recovery are directly connected. Therefore, the proposed architecture is very simple and the operation of DSP becomes fast.

  • This paper describes the development of an embedded wireless LAN controller which can be in parallel operated with an existing utility controller. The embedded controller mainly consists of Prism(R) 2.5 chip set and Atmega 128 microcontroller. In order to communicate over the network, the controller including TCP/IP stack (IP, TCP, UDP, and ICMP), telnet, and X/Z modem has been developed. For a specific application, we have proposed an special method to convert data structure between TCP/IP and X/Z modem and a data buffer algorithm to minimize the RAM memory usage. Finally, the correctness and performance of the protocols are tested and verified using $CommView^{(R)}\;and\;DU^{(R)}$. The development is satisfactorily operated only for 3,381 bytes of RAM usage without sacrificing interoperability between hosts.

  • This paper describe a design of 5GHz OFDM baseband chip for IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN. The proposed device is consists of transmitter and receiver within a single FPGA chip. We applied single tap equalizer that use Normalized LMS algorithm to remove ISI that happen at high speed data transmission. And also, we used carrier wave frequency offset algorithm that use training symbol to remove ICI. The simulation results show the correct transmission without errors the between transmitter and receiver And we can remarkably reduce the number of register through the synthesized circuits by using DSP block and EMB(Embedded Memory Block). The target device for implementation of the synthesized circuits is Altera Stratix EPIS25FC672 FPGA and design platform is VHDL.

  • In this paper, we develop a 2.4GHz ISM band wireless communication platform prototype based on embedded linux which support can be u-Hospital service. The developed system is available connecting between ARM920T processor board and FPGA board and linking IEEE 802.11b PHY board, AD/DA(10Bit) and RF(2.4GHz) board for wireless access. It is also can be utilized for the embedded system design with IEEE 802.11b/g Access Point(Option: IEEE 802.11a/b/g) test due to the Embedded Linux. Also, the developed system is possible to test and verify the radio access technology, Modem(OFDM etc) and IP(Intellectual Property) circuit. And make the most use of the system, we search for a expansion to that home and mobile healthcare, wellness service application.

A study on the Channel Estimation Scheme in IEEE 802.11 Based System (IEEE 802.11 기반 시스템에서 채널추정에 관한 연구)

  • Wireless LAN system is evolving toward high-speed data transmission and more accurate channel estimation is necessarily required to improve communication performance. The PLCP preamble field in IEEE 802.11 based wireless MODEM consists of ten short symbols and two long symbols and is used for synchronization and channel estimation. The existing least square (LS) channel estimation is based on only two long training symbols. After estimating channel response separately by using each long training symbol, the final channel estimation is obtained by the average of each estimation. In this paper, a new channel estimation algorithm is presented to improve the performance of the existing LS channel estimation algorithm. From the fact that the short training symbol consists of 12 non-zero subcarriers, it gives us a clue of being able to additionally estimate at least one fourth of channel coefficients. The new LS algorithm performs channel estimation based on both two long training symbols and a short training symbol. The proposed LS algorithm shows a little bit performance improvement over the existing LS estimation and it will be able to be applied to the IEEE 802.11p WAVE system.
