  • In this paper, the discrete element method was applied to evaluate the stability of composite cover and lining system of landfill. This method is capable of estimating the distribution of tensile force and shear stress mobilized in each liner component and its interfaces, based on a relationship of force and displacement. It was assumed that the cover soil and geomembrane were comprised of slices connected with elastoplastic Winkler springs and tensile spring respectively. Parametric study using this method was performed and compared with other techniques based on limit equilibrium method fur the example analysis.

  • There are two basic concepts about concerning the buckling analysis of a buried pipe. One concept considers the soil around the pipe asn elastic continuum mediaum. The other concept holds that the pipe is sup ported by an elastic spring, which replaces the effects of the surrounding soil (the Winkler model). Theise buckling analysis is based on plane analysis, without considering the corrugation effect and the length effect. This paper thus presents a parametric study using the Finite Element Method (FEM) for the Winker model and proposes a buckling strength formula after examining a 3D analysis considering the corrugation effect and the length effect, thatwhichhelp in estimating the critical buckling strength of such CSP

  • The analysis of laterally loaded piles in sand Is presented through the finite element algorithm using p-y curve. The soil modulus are found iteratively where the reaction in the Winkler model is coincided with that in the f-y curve. Through the finite element algorthm, the direct considevation for the dependent effect of all other depths to a particular depth is possible. Pile head deflection and rotation are computed by this method and compared with field experimental data of statically loaded piles at the Kwang-yang steel mill construction site. The results of this method are compared with the field experimental date of statically loaded piles tested at the Kwang-yang steel mill construction site.

  • Global warming and the depletion of fossil fuels have been caused by decades of reckless development. Wind energy is one form of renewable energy and is considered a future energy source. The wind tower is designed with a fundamental frequency in the soft-stiff design between the 1P and 3P range to avoid resonance. Usually, to perform natural frequency analysis of a wind tower, the boundary condition is set to the Fixed-End, and soil-pile interaction is not considered. In this study, consideration of the effect of soil-pile interaction on the wind tower was included and the difference in the natural frequency was studied. The fixed boundary condition was not affected by the soil condition and depth of the pile and the coupled spring boundary condition was unaffected by the depth of pile but affected by the depth of the pile, and the Winkler spring boundary condition is affected by both the soil condition and the depth of the pile. Therefore, the coupled spring boundary condition should be used in shallow depth soil conditions because the soil condition does not take the shallow depth soil into consideration.

  • Despite the recent development of structural analysis programs for the CRCP pavements over Westergaard's equations and finite element techniques, the Winkler foundations which are modelled by series of vertical springs at the nodes are generally used for the computer modelling of subbases under the concrete slab. Herewith, two parameter of soil foundation model is adopted as the most convenient mathematical model to enable deflections outside the loaded area to be effected and to upgrade the Winkler foundations. This paper highlights the derivations of finite element method for the two-parameter soil foundation model in the concrete pavements.

  • Soil nailing has been widely rosed during the last two decades to stabilize sheep excavated slopes in several countries. In thin study, the discrete element method has been applied to evaluate the stability of the reiuorced slope. This method is capable of not only estimat ins tensile and sheer stresses mobilized in nails but also providing individual safety factors of soil and nails, It has been assumed that the nailed slope be comprised of slices connected with elastoplastic twinkler springs. A reasonable mechanism is applied for representing the behavior between nails and adj scent soils. Taking into account for the bequence of construction the developed method well predicts the measured tensile forces developed in nails so that it is possible to appropriately evaluate the overall safety factor.

  • The paper describes the vibration and stability of tapered beams on two-parameter elastic foundations. The two-parameter elastic foundations are constructed by distributed Winkler springs and a shearing layer as of ten used in soil models. The shear deformation and the rotatory inertia of a beam are taken into account. Governing equations are derived from energy expressions using Hamilton\`s principle. The associated eigenvalue problems are solved to obtain the free vibration frequencies or the buckling loads. Numerical results for the vibration of a beam with an axial force are presented and compared when other solutions are available. Vibration frequencies, mode shapes, and critical forces of a tapered Timoshenko beam on elastic foundations under an axial force are investigated for various thickness ratios, shear foundation parameters, Winkler foundation parameters and boundary conditions.

  • In this study, The failure of water supply facilities is categorized into two phases: functional failure and complete collapse. The fragility curve of water supply facilities under PGA has been developed for two loading cases: actual overseas earthquake and Korean artificial earthquake. The seismic fragility of water supply facilities has been analyzed and compared about failure phases and PGA. From the analysis results, the probability of failure of the wrapped steel pipe and ductile case iron pipe under Korean artificial earthquake has been shown as lower than that under actual overseas earthquake in the range from 0.1 to 0.4. The suggested seismic fragility curve by using Korean artificial earthquake can be exploited in a reasonable seismic design reflecting Korean local ground condition.

  • Landing pier is connect from onshore to offshore with bridge type that a coast structure. The sub-structure is consisted of vertical or batter pile and combined reinforced concrete slab. These days useful design method of quay wall of landing pier type for pile foundation analysis abide by approximate depth of pile supported method, "Harbor and port design criterion, 2005 The ministry of land transport and maritime affairs". The approximate depth of pile supported is calculated two kind of method that one is assume to below depth of 1/$\beta$ from assumed submarine surface and other is 1st fixpoint depth by Chang(1937)'s theory. By this paper, FEM dynamic analysis of 3-dimensions was achieved that it has compared pile fixed end modeling with elastic spring modeling base on winkler theory.

  • To investigate the effects of soil properties of the soft zone around a pile subjected 1,o the horizontal harmonic vibration, the parametric study is perfomed. The determination of the soil reaction or stiffness of the Winkler springs representing the soil around a pile is performed by dividing the soil profile into a number of homogeneous obtained from this study are as follows : 1) The real and imaginary parts of the stiffness show clear variations for the different shear modulus ratios, poisson's ratios, and distance retios to outer boundary as the dimensionless frequency increases. The differences are more pronounced for the imaginary part of the stiffness. 2) The stiffness of soil shows clear decrease. The real parts of the stiffness show larger as the frequency increases. On the other hand, the imaginary parts of the stiffness show smaller.
