This research describes about designing and manufacturing X-wing type flapping micro aerial vehicle which intends to improve the performance of one-pair wing flapping vehicle with innovated design. This design, X-wing as we call, was introduced for some time ago from many laboratories but still there hasn’t any reports dealing on its theoretical or numerical analysis. By manufacturing the X-wing with our own design and succeeding its flight test will give us the general idea on X-wing which may guide us to conduct the numerical and experimental analysis later on. We focused to design the X-wing and introduce some conceptual theories about its characteristics on this report.
Insect flight is adapted to cope with each circumstance by controlling a variety of the parameters of wing motion in nature. Many researchers have struggled to solve the fundamental concept of insect flight, but it has not been solved yet clearly. In this study, to find the most effective flapping wing kinematics, we conducted to analyze CFD data on fixing some of the optimal parameters of wing motion such as stoke amplitude, flip duration and wing rotation type and then controlled the deviation angle by fabricating wing tip motion. Although all patterns have the similar value of lift coefficient and drag coefficient, pattern A(pear-shape type) indicates the highest lift coefficient and pattern H(pear-shape type) has the lowest lift coefficient among four wing tip motions and three deviation angles. This result suggest that the lift and drag coefficient depends on the angle of attack and the deviation angle combined, and it could be explained by delayed stall effect.

In recent years, nonlinear dynamic models have been developed for flapping-type energy harvesting systems with a rigid wing, but not for those with a flexible wing. Thus, in this study, flexible wing designs of NACA0012 section are proposed and measurements of the forces of rigid cambered wings, which are used to estimate the performance of the designed wings, are conducted. Polar curves from the measured lift and drag coefficients show that JavaFoil estimation is much closer to the measured values than Eppler over the entire given range of angles of attack. As the camber of the rigid cambered wings is increased, both the lift and drag coefficients increase, in turn increasing the resultant forces. Moreover, the maximum resultant forces for all rigid cambered wings are achieved at the same angle of attack as the maximum lift coefficient, meaning that the lift coefficient is dominant in representations of the wing characteristics.

This experiment was conducted in attempt of improving hydrodynamic efficiency of the propulsion mechanism by installing a spring to the wing so that the opening angle of the wing in one stroke can be changed automatically, compared to the existing method of fixed maximum opening angle in Weis-Fogh type ship propulsion mechanism. Average thrust coefficient was almost fixed with all velocity ratio with the prototype, but with the spring type, thrust coefficient increased sharply as velocity ratio increased. Average propulsive efficiency was larger with bigger opening angle in the prototype, but in the spring type, the one with smaller spring coefficient had larger value. In the range over 1.0 in velocity ratio where big thrust can be generated, spring type had more than twice of propulsive efficiency increase compared to the prototype.

The wing component model for flutter analysis consisting of stiffness, mass, and aerodynamic model has been constructed based on the full airframe finite element model for 4-seat canard-type small aircraft. A study on wing flutter characteristics has been investigated based on the wing component model constructed using PK method in MSC/NASTRAN for flutter analysis. In addition, wing flutter mechanism for the aircraft under consideration has been analyzed based on the results of normal mode and flutter analysis.
The present study is aimed to achieve dynamic visualization from the in-house 3-D stereoscopic PIV to represent quantitative flow information such as time-resolved 3-D velocity distribution, vorticity, turbulent intensity or Reynolds stresses and so on. One of the application of the present study is Leading edge extension(LEX) flow appearing on modern delta wing aircraft. The other is mixing flow in stirring tank used in industry field. LEX in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modern air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present method resolves also the complicated flow patterns of two type impellers rotating in stirring vessel. Flow quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing visualization. And it makes the easy understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics of the typical industrial mixers.

This paper presents a non-contact inspection system for automatically measuring the thickness of an aircraft wing rip product. In order to conduct the inspection of the wing rib thickness automatically, a non-contact laser displacement sensor, end-effector, and a robot were selected for use. The non-contact type inspection system was evaluated by measuring the measurement deviation of the rotation direction of a C-type yoke end-effector and the transfer direction of a V-slim end-effector. In addition, the non-contact inspection system for wing rib thickness measurements was validated through thickness measurements of a web, flange, and stiffener.

An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the effects on the fore- and hind-wings of a dragonfly-type model. A model with two pairs of wing was developed to measure the lift and thrust of a dragonfly-type model. The fore-wing and hind-wing had incidences angle of $0^{\circ}\;and\;10^{\circ}$. The freestream velocity is 1.6m/sec and the corresponding chord Reynolds number was $Re=2.88{\times}10^3$. Also, these experiments were carried out with a phase difference of $90^{\circ}$ between the fore- and hind-wing, aerodynamic forces caused by fore-wing only and two pairs of wings were investigated according to the reduced frequency. The results show that the model with fore-wings only generates a thrust component; however, the dragonfly-type model with hind-wings with an incidence angle of $10^{\circ}$ generates a drag component. The total drag is also increased with reduced frequency due to the increased lift of hind-wings.
The wing-body trucks are special vehicles that are designed to provide large carrying space and to protect the freights from outside impacts and bad weather. They are constructed to the structure opening and shutting three-layered aluminum top. In the middle- and large-size(above one-ton) wing-body trucks, wing-body is opened/closed by opening and shutting device of oil pressure type. But one-ton truck is constructed that its wing-body is opened/closed in manual to use helping of stay-dampers. So, we developed an electronic opening and shutting device for one-ton wing-body trucks to improve the inconvenience of usage for manually operated wing-body. The developed device is consisted of two connected links and a dc motor combined with an worm gear. The worm gear changes the rotation axis of the dc motor to a right-angled direction and transfers the torque of dc motor to the links. The two connected links open/shut the wing-body using the torque transferred from the dc motor. When the wing-body starts to be opened, the biggest torque is required from the dc motor for opening the wing-body. And as the wing-body is opened more and more, the required torque is smaller for opening the wing-body. Thus, the structure of two connected links are designed to locate at the center of worm gear so that maximum torque of the dc motor is transferred the links at the initial time starting to open wing-body. The controller of the device with open and closed buttons also is designed to protect the device from over-opening and over shutting operations. The developed device is accomplished for many experiments using actual vehicle. Those experiments show that the device has more excellent performance than the oil pressure type.
