  • Effect of drift current on the first stage of wave generation by wind is studied theoretically. The viewpoint is similar to the one described by Phillips (1957) except that drift current is considered. It is found that inclusion of the effect of the drift current modifies significantly the results obtained by Phillips, particularly the resonance condition and wave spectrum.

  • A wave prediction model of DP type with shallow water effects is composed. An jntercomparison study of the deep water wave models has been made to clarify the capacity of this model which has source functions by Incur and propagation scheme by Gadd. It is shown that the growth rate of wave energy is rapid and. for asymmetrical wind fields. this model behaves well. In spite of various response pattern for the wind fields the energy distribution gives reasonable agreements with those of other models.

  • Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is defined as the interaction phenomena of electromagnetic waves scattered from a large structure or complex terrain. In this study, the propagation of linear wave is modeled with ray theory, direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), and some classical theories on flat plates. The wave physics of reflection, refraction, and diffraction are simulated for the investigation of front and back scattering of the one-dimensional plane wave from a tower with ray theory and DSMC, respectively. The effect of rotating disk idealized from the real wind-turbine blades is modeled with a simplified version of the classical electromagnetic theory as well as DSMC based on the ray theory.

  • Ion acoustic solitary wave in a plasma consisting of electrons and ions with an external magnetic field is reinvestigated using the Sagdeev's potential method. Although the Sagdeev potential has a singularity for n < 1, where n is the ion number density, we obtain new solitary wave solutions by expanding the Sagdeev potential up to ${\delta}n^4$ near n = 1. They are compressiv (rarefactive) waves and shock type solitary waves. These waves can exist all together as a superposed wave which may be used to explain what would be observed in the solar wind plasma. We compared our theoretical results with the data of the Freja satellite in the study of Wu et al. (1996). Also it is shown that these solitary waves propagate with a subsonic speed.

  • In this research, the researcher has examined the factors affecting the movement of the soccer ball and will show that the effects such as air resistance, altitude above sea level, wind, air pressure, air temperature, air humidity, rotation of the earth, changes in the earth's gravitational acceleration in different areas. It, the geographical length and latitude of the launch point, the change of gravitational acceleration with height, the change of pressure with height, the change of temperature with height and also the initial spin (Magnus effect) affect the movement of projectiles (especially soccer ball). We modelled th ball based on shell element and derive the motion equations by energy method. Finally, using numerical solution, the wave of the ball is studied. The influences of various parameters are investigated on wave propagation of the ball. Therefore, in short, it can be said that the main factors that play a major role in the lateral deviation of the hit ball are the initial spin of the ball and the wind.

  • In general, the installation of offshore wind turbine have been carried out by a jack-up barge or wind turbine installation vessel. In case of using jack-up barge, an additional barge is required to transport offshore wind turbines. During the transportation, barge is affected by environmental conditions such as wave, wind etc. So, it is important to secure the static and dynamic stability of the barge. In this study, fundamental research was performed to evaluate the stability of barge due to use the guide frame. The analysis for static stability of barge was performed under the two loading conditions with or without wave and those results were evaluated according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries rules. Also motion analysis was performed under the ITTC wave spectrum using buoy data and evaluated based on NORDFORSK guideline by using commercial software Maxsurf Motions.

  • Recently, by the problems owing to utilization of fossil fuel, various green energies receive attention. Wind, the impetus for the wind power generation as one of the green energies, is observed higher quality value in the offshore than onshore. Also, the development of offshore wind turbines is in the spotlight as alternative to solve the problems of onshore wind farm such as securing sites, noise, and electromagnetic waves, and to get efficient wind energy. Therefore, the many researches on offshore wind energy have been carried out. As wind towers are advanced to ocean, offshore wind towers have been enlarged. Thus, stability is required to endure wind force and wave force. In this study, the external forces act on the foundation in multi-layered are calculated by p-y relation.

  • Distribution of wind direction and wind speed is very important from the viewpoint of ship's safety because it is closely related to the formation and development of sea wave. In this study, the climatological characteristics of monthly wind distribution in a greater coasting area of Korea are analyzed by the ECMWF objective analysis data for the period from 1985 to 1995{11 years). Distributions of wind direction from October to March are very similar and wind speed is strongest in January. The NW'ly and WNW'ly winds at a latitude of 30 degrees N and northward and the NE'ly wind in the Straits of Taiwan and the South China Sea are sustaining and very strong. Distributions of wind direction from June to August are similar and the SW'ly and SSW'ly winds in the South China Sea are strong. The strong Southeast trades exists in the winter hemisphere{Southern Hemisphere). Wind speeds in April, May and September are generally weak.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of wind damaged trees in the Hongneung Arboretumin Korea. Many trees in the Hongneung Arboretum were damaged by the 'Kompasu', the seventh typhoon in the year of 2010 having strong impacts on the central region of Korea. Damaged trees were divided into 3 damage types: windthrow, slanted and broken trees. Most of damaged trees (97.3%) were found at low slope (below 15 degree) or medium slope (15~20 degree). The 45.3% of damaged trees were coniferous and 54.7% were deciduous trees. The wind speed was recorded for the duration of the typhoon from 04:00 AM to 12:00 PM on September 2. The average wind speed and the maximum instantaneous wind speed inside the forest were 1.4 m/sec and 3.5 m/sec, respectively. The highest peak of the average and the maximum instantaneous wind speed inside of forest, 3.4 m/sec and 8.7 m/sec respectively, were recorded at 06:10 AM on September 2. To analyze relationship between wind characteristics and the damage types, the average wind speed and the frequency of wind wave was compared to those of pre-typhoon period (Feb. 13, Feb. 20, Apr. 21, Oct. 16, 2009 and Mar. 20, 2010). The results indicated that the damaged trees were affected by frequent wind wave rather than the wind speed itself. Also average wind direction inside the forest was analyzed to investigate the impact of wind direction on the damaged trees. The wind had mainly blown from SE and SW, and the maximum instantaneous wind direction was SE direction overall. Most of the damaged trees (84.0%) had fallen down to the NW or NE direction. This result showed that the fallen direction of the damaged trees and wind direction was highly related. Therefore, we found that the frequency of wind wave was the main factor of wind damages during the typhoon 'Kompasu' and wind direction was highly related to the fallen direction.
