  • This paper presents the experimental results related to soil ionization and electrical breakdown in a concentric hemispherical electrode system under lightning impulse voltages. Dynamic voltage-current and impedance-time characteristics of soil ionization were measured and analyzed. Also the electrical breakdowns of the soil gap were investigated. The time-lag to the peak current corresponds to the soil ionization propagation. The time of ionization propagation in wet sand is found to decrease with increasing the impulse currents. A drastic decrease in ground resistance was observed during the impulse current spreading in sand. The electrical breakdown appears at the wave tail of impulse voltage and results in a wide scatter in V-t curves. The voltage-current curves have a fan-like shape attributed to ionization processes which result in increasing current and decreasing voltage.

  • Relative density, used to express dynamics condition of sand quantitatively, is measured by RI Test, Standard Penetration Test and Cone Penetration Test. Each measurement method has demerits, which is complicated or needs a specific analysis instrument and an analysis of expert. Also the ground is in wet condition commonly because of an unsaturated zone between a saturated zone and a surface, so the behaviour of the ground has different engineering properties unlike the dry ground and it diminishes accuracy of measuring relative density. In this study, the correlation between relative density and penetration of fall cone test in dry condition and wet condition with variation of water content was analyzed and a simple measuring method for relative density was suggested. As a result, there were difference of penetration between dry sands and wet sands, the correlation between relative density and penetration showed linear expression and relative density could be measured by the linear relation.

  • This study was conducted to find a way to reduce the production of cakes generated in the domestic aggregate production process. Cakes from 8 wet aggregate producers were collected and particle size was analyzed. Samples were collected step by step from an aggregate producer A, particle size analysis was performed, and the material balance was calculated before and after an sand recovery unit by modeling the production process. As a result of the particle size analysis of eight cakes, one sample contained 50% sand, and the rest contained about 5% to 25% sand. The results showing that the cake contained a variety of sand in cakes may indicate that the recovery efficiency of the sand recovery units in the field varied. Sieve analysis of the samples showed that the generation of sand particles increased 2.8 times during the third crushing compared to the second crushing, and more cake particles were generated. As a result of simulating the sand recovery unit model, the lower the cut point of the cyclone and dewatering screen, the higher the sand production and the less cake production appeared. In order to reduce the production of cake in the field, it was determined that an optimal operation of the sand recovery unit was necessary in the aggregate production process.

  • This paper investigates the utilization of waste tyre crumb rubber as the fine aggregate in precast concrete Paving block (PCPB). PCPB's are generally preferred for city roads, pedestrian crosswalk, parking lots and bus terminals. The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the mechanical properties of wet cast PCPB containing waste tyre crumb rubber. The mechanical properties were investigated using a density, compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength tests at 7, 28 56 days according to the IS 15688:2006 and EN1338. The wet cast method was followed for producing PCPB samples. The fine aggregate (river sand) was replaced with waste tyre crumb in percentage of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by volume. All the test results were compared with the conventional PCPB (Without rubber). The test results indicate its feasibility for incorporating waste tyre crumb rubber in the production of PCPB by the wet cast method.

  • It has been known that the value of soil resistance drops when a high impulse curennt is injected into a grounding electrode. In this paper, impulse generator is used to investigate the dry soil and wet soil characteristics in cylinderical test cell. The impulse resistances and breakdown characteristics were discussed based on its voltage and current traces. As a result, sand resistances are decreased with increasing the applied currents. It was thought that a decrease in resistance of dry sand with increasing current is due to both thermal and ionization processes. On the other hand, in case there is no water presence in the soil, the reduction in resistance as the currents are of dry sand increased is mainly due to the ionization process.

  • Cement mortar and concrete can be used as grouts but problems regarding shrinkage and the discord of coefficients of thermal expansion between grouts and HDPE pipes has to be solved. Thermal conductivities of wet condition two times larger than those of dry condition, except for pure cement mortar. The addition of sand into the cement grouts greatly increases the thermal conductivity. The addition of bentonite into the cement grouts reduces thermal conductivity thus reducing the density. Bentonite grouting must be used only below the groundwater table since bentonite grouts possesses high shrinkage property in dry condition. The addition of sand prevents the shrinkage of bentonite grouts. Bentonite manufactured in Korea can be used since they possess similar thermal conductivities with imported products. The addition of sand into the bentonite grouts greatly increases the thermal conductivity.

  • In developing high temperature molds with advantages of the sand and precision (investment) castings, mechanical properties of the mold were improved through homogeneous coating of starting powders with an inorganic binder and improvement of fabrication process. Beads with mullite composition were employed for properties of the mold under high temperature, which was compared with artificial sands. Precursors of silica and sodium oxide were used as starting materials for an inorganic binder to achieve homogeneous coating on the starting powders. Strength was enhanced by the glass phase converted from the inorganic binder through heat treatment process. Also, two kinds of process, wet and dry processes, were incorporated to prepare mold specimens. Consequently, fabrication process of the mold with superior strength and high temperature applicability, compared with the previous molds for sand casting, could be suggested through control of the starting material and enhancement of the vitrification efficiency.

  • The weathered granite soil involves problems in its stability in soil structures depending upon the reduction of soil strength due to the water absorption, crushability, and content of colored mineral and feldspar. As an attemt to solve the problems associated with soil stability, the crushability of weathered granite soil was investigated by conducting tests such as compaction test, CBR test, unconfined compression test, direct shear test, triaxial compression test, and permeability test on the five soil samples different in weathering and mineral compositions. The experimental results are summarized as follows: The ratio of increasing dry density in the weathered granite soil was high as the compaction energy was low, while it was low as the compaction energy was increased. The unconfined compressive strength. and CBR value were highest in the dry side rather than in the soil with the optimum moisture content, when the soil was compacted by adjusting water content. However, the unconfined compressive strength of smples, which were compacted and oven dried, were highest in the wet side rather than in soil with the optimum moisture content. As the soil becomes coarse grain, the ratio of specific surface area increased due to increased crushability, and the increasing ratio of the specific surface area decreased as the compaction energy was increased. The highest ratio of grain crushability was attained in the wet side rather than in the soil with the optimum moisture content. Such tendency was transforming to the dry side as the compaction energy was increased. The effect of water on the grain crushability of soil was high in the coarse grained soil. The specific surface area of WK soil sample, when compacted under the condition of air dried and under the optimum moisture content, was constant regardless of the compaction energy. When the weathered granite soil and river sand with the same grain size were compacted with low compaction energy, the weathered granite soil with crushability had higher dry density than river sand. However, when the compaction energy reached to certain point over limitation, the river sand had higher dry density than the weathered granite soil. The coefficient of permeability was lowest in the wet side rather than in the optimum moisture content, when the soil was compacted by adjusting soil water content. The reduction of permeability of soil due to the compaction was more apparent in the weathered granite soil than in the river sand. The highly significant correlation coefficient was obtained between the amount of particle breakage and dry density of the compacted soil.

  • Remarkable development of sand bars is an important characteristic of fluviatile landform of Korea. Their development owes, in one part, to the supply of abundant sandy materials to river valley floor, originated from the weathering of essentially granitic rocks, distributed almost all over the country. It owes, in other part, to river valley disposition presenting many angular sinuosity guided by fracture grid, impeding regular migration of sandy materials along valley floor. Besides, high amplitude of river discharge fluctuation of the country plays is proved to be favorable hydrological factor for the development of the sand bars. The sand bars play important roles in favor of river hydro-ecological environment. They mitigate the amplitude of discharge fluctuation regime. In flood spell, sand grains in the main channel migrate so as to broden wet section. At the spell of low water level, they newly accumulate as to impede rapid stream discharge. Especially high quantity of reserved water in porous space of sand bar is preciously available both for human livelihood and for ecological environment.

  • As the shortage of natural & good quality aggregate for concrete, it is needed development of alternative aggregate. At the present time, the crushed sand is widely used among the alternation aggregate, and the usage of crushed sand will be increased more and more. Generally, crushed sud is produced with wet process in domestic, but some manufacturing companies which are handicapped with local restrict are produced by dry process. In this study, analyzing the facilities of dry crushed sand, the quality properties of dry crushed sand was done by Korean Industrial Standards. Based on the quality results of dry crushed sand, the experiment of concrete with the dry crushed sand which is substitute for sea sand was done. As the results of basic qualities, the amount of 0.08 mm sieve passing ratio was over KS criteria, and the fineness modulus was higher than sea sand, and the other physical properties of dry crushed sand was similar to sea sand. The results of concrete experiment, according to the substitutive ratio of dry crushed sand is increased, the slump and air content of concrete was decreased by increase of fine particles of dry crushed sand, and the unit weight content, compressive & tensile strength of concrete were increased on the contrary. The physical properties of concrete used dry crushed sand were showed same tendency without relation to W/B. Consequently, if the fine particle contents of dry crushed sand was lower, it is judged that dry crushed sand is no problem to use for concrete aggregate and the amount of usage will be increased.
