This study aims to develop useful programs, which would promote the economic activities of rural elderly and their living standard as the silver population is growing in the society, to present the direction of policy related to the elderly for governmental agencies, and make it available as data that can be accessed by civil servants, in charge of elderly-related matters and currently serving at city office and municipal and county agricultural technique center, so that they can provide education to the elderly. For this, first, the economic condition of the rural elderly and their requirements have to be diagnosed. Second, we developed a program that specially aimed at improving their economic activities. To develop of program, a survey questionnaire was administered with the 881 elderly over 60 years old who live in 110 rural villages. Face to face interview was carried out by professional interviewer. The result was once posted in the 2nd issue of volume 14th of this journal in 2004 with the title of "Study of the rural elderly's activities and needs of economics." Based on such result of study, we developed the program to provide jobs to the rural elderly that are suitable for them. 2 types programs, which differ from each other depending on the subject of implementing the welfare of the elderly, were developed: first, "program to create jobs for rural elderly at the policy supporting level, which requires the government to drive forward, and second, 'program to provide education to rural elderly at the social level' to foster them as competent human resources."

Purpose: This study explored the impact of using a music and horticultural therapy program on depression among rural seniors living in Yeongam-gun and conducted a comparative analysis before and after the program to present basic data helpful for an integrated mental health promotion program tailored to rural areas. Research methodology: The analysis subjects of this study were users of the rural residential program of 'Our Village Day Care Center' in Yeongam-gun in 2023, with a total of 20 people, 10 seniors for each program. The research analysis used SPSS to determine the effect on participation and depression before and after the program was implemented. Results: As a result of the analysis, depression levels decreased after completion of the horticultural therapy program and music therapy program, and this was statistically significant. Conclusion: Three implications are presented based on the following research results. First, the need for programs that can improve not only the physical health but also the mental health of elderly people living in rural areas is suggested. Second, the need for programs that link cultural programs such as music and gardening activities with welfare programs is suggested. Third, the need for follow-up management and verification of periodic mental health checkups for rural elderly is suggested.
In aging Korean society, many elderly people have difficulty in the areas of health, economic insecurity, role-loss(both work & spouse), loneliness, and family conflicts. Above all, retirement from work is one of the most important stressful life events having influences an elderly's persons economic & social activities, mental state, health status, and Lifelong educational programs could help the aged cope with these situations in later life. Health and social welfare are commonly recognized as an important value of life. They also have an effect on each other. Most people agree that the promotion of health and social welfare is to take a short-cut toward achieving well-being. Thus we need to develop a substantially integrated program of lifelong education, before and after retirement, for the promotion of health and welfare. Universities have the advantage of practicing lifelong educational programs because they have more material, intellectual, and human resources than any other educational facilities. As a result, the purposed of this study is to suggest life-long educational programs for promoting both health conditions and the level of social welfare by utilizing an aging center affiliated with a university. Specifically, the developmental courses of pre-retirement, learning in retirement, elder-hostels, and the connection between pre and post-retirement educational programs are proposed in this study.
The purpose of this study was to identify the level of care-givers' knowledge, their attitude towards the elderly and their stress levels within the job, and to apprehend the cause which has had an influence on job stress. The research subjects were 230 care-givers who work in a sanitarium for the elderly in the East of Jeollanamdo. The tool used to measure their knowledge of the elderly was FAQ1 and the semantic differential scale was used to determine the attitude. Job stress was measured by the tool which was used by sun-ju Park. The data analysis was carried out by SPSS Win 13.0. The results of this study are as follows; The care-givers' knowledge level point towards the elderly was relatively low at 44.6%. The average point of attitude toward the elderly was 3.91, which is relatively moderate. The percentages of job stress was generally low. The results showed us that there was no correlation with the knowledge level of the elderly, the attitude towards the elderly and job stress. Since the results indicated that care-givers' knowledge level for the elderly was low, we reached the conclusion that further education where care-givers can get general knowledge for the elderly and aging is necessary. Moreover, research for strengthening positive attitudes towards the elderly is also necessary.
Various health and social issues related to the elderly are emerging in line with the rapid aging of the population. In particular, dementia currently has a prevalence of about 10 percent of the elderly population in South Korea, which increases financial and social burdens to not only individual patients but also their caring family. To assess the effects of participating in the forest therapy programs for dementia prevention, this study recruited participants aged 50 and above and tested their depression (Korean form of Geriatric Depression Scale; KGDS) and stress response (Modified form of Stress Response Inventory; SRI-MF), which are emotional aspects of dementia. As a result, KGDS showed a significant decrease of 3.2 points from 8.4 to 5.2 points, and SRI-MF showed a significant decrease of 7.2 points from 40 to 32.8 points, indicating a statistically significant improvement in both. In addition, participants with minor depression and high level of stress in the pretest showed statistically significant improvements in the SRI-MF for men, and the KGDS and SRI-MF for women. Furthermore, there were statistically significant improvements in KGDS for participants in their 60s and in SRI-MF for those in their 70s in terms of age, and in both KGDS and SRI-MF for participants with chronic diseases and in KGDS for participants without chronic diseases. This study confirmed the effects of forest therapy on the prevention of the emotional aspects of dementia and laid the groundwork for increasing the applicability of forest therapy by obtaining a place for dementia prevention as a field of forest therapy.
The elderly population in Korea is rapidly growing. As the population ages, meals become a greater concern, as physical and psychological health problems are directly affected by dietary life, especially for the lower-income elderly. Although the government provides support through a free congregate meal service, there is a lack of systematic management of this meal service. This study investigates the experience of the elderly, especially the symbolic meaning and issues regarding the congregate meal service in their dietary life, to establish strategies for improving congregate meal services. Qualitative data was collected from ten elderly receivers of meal services through in-depth interviews and data was analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological research methods. Overall, 90 significant statements, 13 formulated meanings, and five theme clusters were deduced. The five theme clusters for the importance of meal services to the elderly included the followings: "a real meal", "enjoyment of living", "maintenance of regular life", "place for social life" and "meal of silence". We found that the elderly regarded the congregate free meal service not only as meals to appreciate but also as a form of social life. Furthermore, the elderly did not typically express any complaints regarding congregate meal services because they are free. The results showed that it might be difficult to evaluate the quality of meal services based on the opinions of the service receivers. This study suggests it is necessary to develop multilateral evaluation methods to reflect the needs of the elderly and to improve the congregate meal services at elderly welfare centers.
Background : The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data according to cognitive function, that will help activities of daily living of the elderly through the comparative study of activities daily living and functional training. Methods : The subjects of this study 122 patients 65 years old or more ADL and cognitive function assessment was evaluated. They were registered in the Elderly in nursing homes and welfare centers, located in Gyeonggi. All study participants had a sufficient explanation for the purposes of research and evaluation methods and procedures for the elderly. The survey period 17 October to 11 November 2011 was conducted through face-to-face survey was conducted. Results : Cognitive function according to the K-MMSE score of 24 points or more, 23 to 18 points, 17 points or less were classified. Ability to perform activities of daily living (personal hygiene, bathing, toilet use, stair climbing, dressing, stool control, urinary control, gait, chair/bed, etc.) according to the degree of cognitive function by evaluating the ability to perform daily living compared results in all variables were statistically significant (p<.5). Conclusion : As a result, the higher cognitive functions can be seen that the higher the ability to perform activities of daily living.
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of ceramic activities on elderly depression and life satisfaction. The research design was based on one group, with a pre and post-test study design. The subjects of this study included twelve elderly from anelderly daytime care center in Yang-san. Instruments used in this research were KGDS (Korea Form of Geriatric Depression Scale) developed by Jung et al., and a form of life satisfaction developed by Youn. A one-hour ceramic activity was offered to participants weekly, for five weeks. The results showed that depression and life satisfaction changed after the ceramic activities. The participants produced results of emotional aspects for demented old people. More specifically and significantly, positive emotions such as pleasure, in-terest, and tranquility were increased, while negative emotions such as anger or depression were significantly decreased through the ceramic activities. Thus, this study's ceramic activities program appeared to have beneficial effects on elderly depression and life satisfaction.
Korea has rapidly become an aging society, and this phenomenon is found not only in common population but also in many religious circles. In this context, interest in the welfare of retired clergy members is increasing, and some religious organizations are trying to devise and perform rules and/or policies that ensure a secure post-retirement life for their clergy. However, the welfare benefits differ from one religion to another according to the characteristics of the given religion's organizational structure. For instance, denominations with a centralized hierarchy such as Catholicism or Won Buddhism implement a relatively stable welfare system for their elderly clergy members whereas autonomous denominations like many Buddhist or Christian orders are often found to have somewhat insecure welfare systems. Clergy welfare in Daesoon Jinrihoe, one of the representative new religions in Korea, is emerging as an important issue as Daesoon Jinrihoe is also affected by the problems of Korea's aging society. However, since the order has a mixed system of a centralized hierarchy and autonomous local branches, the welfare for their elderly clergy lacks clear lines of accountability. Consequently, there have been talks to devise a proper welfare system; however, these talks have come to a standstill. In this regard, this study aims to look into and analyze how various structures and welfare systems within Korean religious organizations impact elderly clergy. Lastly, this research will provide suggestions on practical alternatives for Daesoon Jinrihoe which could resolve the problems within their welfare system that negatively impact elderly clergy members at present.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise intention, exercise habit, exercise self-efficacy on exercise behavior with elders at welfare center. Methods: The subjects were 152 elders at the welfare center at J city. Data were collected using the questionnaires which consisted of the Exercise intention scale and the Exercise habit scale developed by Lee and Gu (2018), and the Exercise self-efficacy scale developed by Lee and Chang (2001). The collected data were analyzed with the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program, which was used for frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, x2 test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: The regular exercise group consisted of 92 elders (62.5%) and the irregular exercise group of 60 elders (39.5%). The scores for exercise intention, exercise habits, exercise self-efficacy were 3.28±0.70, 3.92±0.61, 2.80±0.88 in regular exercise group, and 2.38±0.99, 3.00±1.07, 2.04±0.73 in irregular exercise group, respectively. Two groups were significantly different between the two groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that exercise intention (OR: 2.26, 95% CI:1.19~4.28), exercise habits (OR: 1.79, 95% CI:1.01~3.15), exercise self-efficacy (OR: 1.99, 95% CI:1.11~3.57) were affecting factors for regular exercise in elders. Conclusion: To increase the regular exercise behaviors of the elderly at the welfare center, it is needed the strategies to increase exercise intention, exercise self-efficacy, and exercise habits.
