  • Ultrasonic metal welder is consisted of power supply, transducer, booster, and horn. Precise designing is required since each part's shape, length and mass can affect driving frequency and vibration mode. This paper gives a description of an experimental study of the ultrasonic welding of metals. A horn suitable for 40,000Hz was attached to the ultrasonic metal welder in order to weld Cu sheet. The Cu sheet welding was done with different amplitude, pressure and welding time, and its maximum tension was measured. Maximum tension of 177.99N was obtained when the pressure was 2.5bar, amplitude was 80%, and welding time was 0.34sec. Therefore, excessive welding condition negatively influences maximum tension measurement result.

  • The high pressure vessels that are constructed by welding process have many welding lines and most of the leakage defects are occurred on these welding lines. The acoustic emission(AE) technique has adopted to detect the defect location and leakage on welding parts, but the AE signal in leakage are incomplete due to the attenuation, reiteration, instability and limit of defect size. To overcome these troubles, the experiments in this study are conducted to measure the indirect media-propagated AE signal perpendicular to the leakage hole. The AE signals that are acquired from the direct and indirect media are analyzed, and the reliability of the indirect media-propagated AE signal are examined experimentally. By AE signal investigation, this method can be adopted to detect efficiently the leakage in welding parts.

  • For three-dimensional finite element welding residual stress simulation, several methods are available. Two widely used methods are the moving heat source model using heat flux and the temperature boundary condition model using the temperature profile of the welded beads. However, each model has pros and cons in terms of calculation times and difficulties in determining welding parameters. In this paper, a new method using the moving temperature profile model is proposed to perform efficiently 3-D FE welding residual stress analysis for large structures. Comparison with existing experimental residual stress measurement data of two-pass welding pipe and SNL(Sandia National Laboratories) mock-up canister shows the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents friction and wear related results of thermite and gas pressure welded rails under various environmental contact conditions. A welded rail which is manufactured by thermite welding and gas pressure one has been tested rail full range of test conditions in a pin-on-disk wear testing machine. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear rates of a welded rail are heavily dependent on the contact pressures and sliding environments for two welding methods such as thermite and gas pressure weldings.

  • Demand of the clean and convenient natural gas has continuously increased with recognizing of the environment problem since liquefied natural gas was introduced in Korea. Clean fuel natural gas was supplied to each city through high tensile strength pipeline connected by welding. Grades of pipeline were divided into the high and middle pressure according to supply pressure. Pipeline was welded mainly SMA welding process due to its easy handling, the other welding process was adopted according to the constructing condition. We were examined on the microstructure variation and mechanical properties of weld metal for high pressure pipeline, API 5L X-42.

  • In case of hollow cylinder extrusion using porthole die, the effects of extrusion parameters-temperature, the speed of extrusion, the shape of the die and mandrel-on metal flow in porthole die extrusion of aluminum have been investigated. However, there have been few studies about condenser tube extruded by porthole die. Original metal flow of condenser tube by porthole die extrusion is similar to hollow cylinder extrusion but the estimation of metal flow for extrusion parameters is different. For example, variation of chamber length in hollow extrusion only affects the welding pressure, however, the welding chamber length in condenser tube extrusion influences to the welding pressure as well as the deflection of mandrel. This study was designed to evaluate metal flow, welding pressure, extrusion load, tendency of mandrel deflection according to angular variation in the bottom of chamber in porthole die. Estimation was carried out using finite element method in as non-steady state. Analytical results can provide useful information the optimal design of porthole die.

  • Dynamic characteristics of the short circuit mode are investigated using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. When the initial molten drop volume, contact area and wire feed rate are given, rate change of the molten bridge profiles, pressure and velocity distributions are predicted. The electromagnetic force with proper boundary conditions are included in the formulation to consider the effects of welding current. It is found that the molten metal is transferred to the weld pool mainly due to the pressure difference caused by the curvatures in the initial stage, and electromagnetic force becomes dominant factor in the final stage of short circuit transfer. Necking occurs at the contact position between the molten drop and weld pool, and the initial molten drop volume and welding current have significant effects on break-up time.

  • The purpose of this paper is to understand the behavior of GHTAW process under the space environment with the experimental and numerical analysis. Gas Hollow Tungsten Arc Welding (GHTAW) using a hollow tungsten electrode was adopted, since the ignition and discharge of a conventional GTAW process is not appropriate to the space environment due to low pressure in space. In order to clarify the phenomena of GHTAW under space environment, an investigation of thermal and physical properties of the GHTAW arc plasma was experimentally performed under low pressure conditions. Furthermore, the molten pool behavior and weldment of GHTAW were understood by CFD-based numerical analysis, based on the models of GHTA heat source, arc pressure and electromagnetic force induced by arc plasma, the characteristics of which were obtained by the captured images of a CCD camera.
