The importance of dual-fuel engines has increased for reducing CO2 emissions. However, the low operating temperature of this engine may induce low-temperature corrosion at combustion parts, which reduces the engine service life. To overcome this problem, NiCr38Al4 alloy was developed for valve spindle, but the cost of this alloy is expensive due to its high Cr content. For reducing the manufacturing cost of valve spindle, in the present work, NiCr38Al4 alloy was welded with Nimonic80A alloy by conducting friction welding. The tensile test results show that the strength of friction-welded specimens follows the properties of the lower-strength parent materials, without severe cracks at the interface. The large shear strain and frictional heat from friction welding not only reduce grain size but also induce solute element diffusion at the interfacial region. Because of the low Cr diffusivity compared with Ti, Cr carbides were not observed in the Nimonic80A matrix, while Ti carbides were distributed in both the Nimonic80A and SNCrW matrices.

Laser beam welding process is a relatively new process in comparison with arc welding process, but it is expected to apply widely because of the many advantages, and research and development of that process is being progressed actively for the practical use. the application of this welding process has been restricted due to the high initial investment and the need of precise processing against the material, but cost reduction and thick plate welding in high speed have become practial by recent technological development, and this welding process to not only small parts in automobile, machinery and physicochemical field, but also a large structure and pipe line are being applied. In order to utilize this welding process appropriately to a steel structure, the properties of welding residual stresses and fracture toughness in welded joints are to be investigated for relibilty. On this study, after performing the finite element analysis, thermal and residual stress properties have been examined to the general structural steel (HT50) by laser beam welding. Besides, the property of fracture toughness has been investigated by the Charpy impact test and 3-points bending CTOD test carried out in the range of temperature between $-60^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. From the research results it is revealed that the maximum residual stress appears in the center of plate thickness and the fracture toughness is influenced by strength mis-match.
There are many methods to reduce the weight and the cost of the automobile body, among them, Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) is new welding method applied to body structure. It is necessary to evaluate mechanical properties of TWB structures or sheets for the application to automobile body parts. In this study, the stiffness of T-type and L-type joint structures, composite of TWB panel, which simplified two portions of side structure in automobile body were investigated. Additionally, the fatigue properties of TWB panels were obtained. Two types of welding technologies, laser and mash seam welding, were used to join mild panels with different thickness. This results are compared with conventional structures. The results are as follows: 1) The stiffness of joint structures, composite of TWB panel, is approximately 17% higher than that of conventional ones. 2) The location of welding line in TWB had a effect on the in plane bending stiffness, but not on the out of plane bending stiffness. 3) In terms of welding technology type, the mash seam welding show higher stiffness than the laser welding for in plane bending stiffness. But minimal differences in both types are revealed for out of plane bending stiffness. 4) The fatigue strength, composite of TWB panel, is lower than that of base steel. It is thought that defects in the welding zone had the action of notch in the fatigue test.

The $CO_2$ welding with 100% $CO_2$ gas is commonly used because of its cost and efficiency. Arc phenomena and spattering ratio of the $CO_2$ welding are influenced by various factors such as chemical compositions of welding wire, shielding gas, welding condition and welding power source etc.. Spattering ratio is predominantly influenced by the welding condition which determines a droplet transfer rode. In this study, arc phenomena and spattering ratio are investigated by using two type of FCW(titania type, semi-metal type). Then, the welding quality and optimum welding condition can be selected. From this study, the following results ware obtained; 1) In low current range(140A), FCW up to welding voltage(22V) resulted in a typical short circuit transfer, increase of spattering ratio and growth of spatter diameter. 2) In high current range(320A), the arc stability in titania FCW of a typical globular transfer is better than that of semi-metal FCW.

The existing methods for installation of long steel pipe pile have some uneconomical problems such as increase of installation cost and period due to the welding of two piles and removal of soil plug, and decrease of driving efficiency due to the increase of driving resistance by time effect during the welding of piles and removal of soil plug, etc. Thus, in this study, new installation method for long steel pipe pile is suggested to work out the existing problems, and calibration chamber tests are peformed to investigate both driving and economical efficiency for the suggested method. The test results showed that the new installation method has increase bearing capacity as well as reduce installation cost and period for long steel pipe piles as compared with existing methods.
The main requirements of modern welded metal structures are the load-carrying capacity (safety), fitness for production, and economy. The primary objective of attaching longitudinal stiffeners is to improve the buckling strength of relatively thin compression panels. This paper gives several comparisons for stiffened plates with different loadings (static, dynamic), different shape of stiffeners (flat, L-shape, trapezoidal), different steel grades, and different welding technologies (SMAW, GMAW, SAW), different costs to show the necessity of a combination of design, fabrication and economic aspects. Safety and fitness for production are guaranteed by fulfilling the design and fabrication constraints. The economy is achieved by minimizing the cost function. It is shown that the optimum sizes depend on the welding technology, the material yield stress, the profile of the stiffeners, the load cycles and the place of the production.

During the last two decades the laser beam has progressed from a sophisticated laboratory apparatus to an adaptable and viable industrial tool. Especially, in its welding mode, the laser offers high travel speed, low distortion, and narrow fusion and heat-affected zones (HAZ). The principal obstacle to selection of a laser processing method in production is its relatively high equipment cost and the natural unwillingness of production supervision to try something new until it is thoroughly proven. The major objective of this work is focused on the combined features of gas tungsten arc and a low-power cold laser beam. Although high-power laser beams have been combined with the plasma from a gas tungsten arc (GTA) torch for use in welding as early as 1980, recent work at the Ohio State University has employed a low power laser beam to initiate, direct, and concentrate a gas tungsten arcs. In this work, the laser beam from a 7 watts carbon monoxide laser was combined with electrical discharges from a short-pulsed capacitive discharge GTA welding power supply. When the low power CO laser beam passes through a special composition shielding gas, the CO molecules in the gas absorbs the radiation, and ionizes through a process known as non-equilibrium, vibration-vibration pumping. The resulting laser-induced plasma (LIP) was positioned between various configurations of electrodes. The high-voltage impulse applied to the electrodes forced rapid electrical breakdown between the electrodes. Electrical discharges between tungsten electrodes and aluminum sheet specimens followed the ionized path provided by LIP. The result was well focused melted spots.

The Cu-bearing PFS-700 steel which has yield strength over 700 MPa was developed to replace the existing submarine structural material, HY-100. PFS-700 steel has good combination of mechanical properties and superior weldability which can be welded without pre-heating before welding. Application PFS-700 steel to submarine or battle ship will give a great reduction of cost by removing or lowing pre-heating. To develop pre-heat free welding consumables that matches and take advantage of PFS-700 steel, new welding consumables have been designed for the GMAW, SAW processes and explosion bulge test(EBT) were conducted to see the reliability of welded structure. All welding was conducted without pre-heating before welding, the inter-pass temperatures were below $50^{\circ}C$ for SAW50 and $150^{\circ}C$ for GMAW and SAW150. All EBT specimens show over 14% reduction of thickness without through-thickness crack or propagation of crack to the hole-down area. Tensile properties for all welding conditions show higher(GMAW) or similar values(SAW50, SAW150) to the base metal. Charpy impact values for the weld metal also show 163.5J(GMAW), 95.4J(SAW50) and 69.0J(SAW150), which meet the goal, 50J, of this project.

In recent automotive industry, vehicle weight can be reduced by one-step forming of tailored blanks welded with two or more sheets of metal blanks. Tailored blank(TB) welding is a production method for blanks involving welding together materials of different quality, thickness, and coating, and has proved popular in fabrication automotive parts. This paper deals with the forming characteristics of mash seam welded tailored blanks. Using these forming characteristics, the bumper beam was developed using the mash seam welded tailored blank with the different thickness. We performed the forming simulation with respect to strain distribution on blank during the stamping of the bumper rail part. Based on these results, we made some stamping tryouts with selected types of blank designs to investigate the formability of tailored blank with different thickness. During the tryouts, we knew that it was important the BHF(Blank Holding Force). We obtained to reducing 10.5% weight and cost with adapting the bumper beam of automotive component using the tailored blank of mash seam welding.
The ferritic stainless steels are generally considered to have poor weldability compared with that of the austenitic stainless steels. However the primary advantages of ferritic stainless steels include lower material cost than the more commonly used austenitic stainless steels and a greater resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Thus, the weldability of ferritic stainless steels was investigated in this study. In concerning the weldability, Grain size measurement test, Erichsen test and Varestraint test were involved. full penetration welds were produced by autogeneous direct current straight polarity (DCSP) and pulsed currents gas tungsten arc welding (GIAW) and the effect of pulsed currents welding on the welds was compared to that of DCSP welding. The results showed that pulsed current was effective to refine grain size in the weld metal and the finest grain size was obtained at the frequency of 150Hz. In addition, the ductility of welds was lower than that of base metal. Finally, autogeneous type 444 welds were less susceptible to macro solidification cracks, but more sensitive to micro cracks; SEM/EDS analysis indicated that all the inclusions in the crack showed enrichment of Mn, Si, O and S.
