  • Currently knowledge of strain in welds has mainly been obtained from strain gaging method; that is directly attaching most of the material to the gage. The very few non-contact method are still in the early stage. One of the non-contact methods is by the use of the laser that has high-level of the accuracy for the measurement, and this laser also has excellent characteristics on which many studies for its applications are focused throughout the many fields. The dissertation is on the measurement of the strain caused by the characteristics and the temperature changes of the TIG welded zone which is used with 3D ESPI system that is functionally modified through the laser ESPI system. This system employed the aluminum sheet-metal which are mainly used for the steel plate such as for the electronics, chemistry, food instrument and electronic appliances.

  • In this study, a 20,000Hz ultrasonic horn was designed and fabricated using a finite element analysis. The horn's resonate frequency was 19,991Hz, and the harmonic response frequency was 20,000Hz. In order to observe the developed horn's performance, 4,000 pieces of displacement data were obtained using an optical sensor and were analyzed using a fast Fourier transform. Finally, the developed horn's resonate frequency was found to be 19,992Hz. The effect of the tip area of the developed horn on the weldability of a Cu sheet was experimentally investigated. It was found that the welding strengths of specimens welded using a small tip area were generally higherthan those of specimens welded using a large tip area.

  • Tailored Blanks are defined as two or more separate pieces of sheet material having the same or dissimilar thickness and/or physical properties, joined together before forming. Its application is being increased especially in the automotive industrial area for the cost reduction, weight saving, and improvement of strength. In this paper, the deforming behaviour of the laser welded blanks with regard to different thicknesses and combinations are described through some experimental investigations on the formability of a door inner. To investigate how the combination of thickness and material property influences the movement of welding line, a series of laser welded T/B blanks are tested.

  • Spot welding has been used in the sheet metal joining processes because of its high productivity and convenience. In this study, predicting methods of fatigue life of spot welded joint have been investigated and fatigue and static tests were conducted with the peel-tension specimens using cold rolled steel plate(SPCC). Fatigue life of peel-tension spot welded joint was influenced by tail effect. Fatigue life evaluation using modified stress index parameter, considering the effective eccentric length, can predict the life more exactly than conventional stress index parameter.

  • Laser beam welding is more advantageous compared to conventional methods. Titanium/Aluminium dissimilar alloy thin sheet metals are difficult to weld due to large difference in melting point. The performance of the weldment depends upon interlayer formation and distribution of intermetallics. During welding, aluminium gets lost at the temperature below the melting point of titanium. Therefore, it is needed to improve a new metal joining techniques between these two alloys. The present work is carried for welding TI6AL4V and AA2024 alloy by using Nd:YAG Pulsed laser welding unit. The performance of the butt welded interlayer structures are discussed in detail using hardness test and SEM. Test results reveal that interlayer fracture is caused near aluminium side due to low strength at the weld joint.

  • Recently, finite element method has been used as an effective tool in the design process of sheet metal forming. In the present study, an implicit method and an explicit method have been developed for 2D analysis and 3D analysis, respectively, and applied to several processes including plane strain draw bending and TWB sqaure cup drawing. Also, commercial codes are used for geometrically complex problems, such as tube hydroforming, "L" cup deep drawing and side frame forming. In this paper, basic formulations used in the methods are introduced and results obtained from the applications are discussed.discussed.

  • Recently, Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) is widely used in automotive industry since the transformation characteristic of its material can be changed. However, clearance between welding surfaces becomes the important factor which affect the quality of the laser weld, causing difficulties in preparing the sheet. The objective of this paper is to systematically evaluate the effects of previously presented fracture criterion and shearing condition on precise mechanical shearing simulation result. For this purpose, a parametric study was peformed to investigate the effect of finite element size and fracture criterion on simulation result. Also, in order to predict the optimum shearing condition, effect of shearing conditions such as clearance and punch radius on the shear plane shape was evaluated.

  • In this study, welding distortion analysis is performed for various design of tube shape structures which are assembled with aluminum sheet metal. Aluminum 5052 plates of 1mm thickness are used to analyze. An efficient keyhole model, as a welding heat source, is used for the prediction of full penetration weld size and shape which is required for the thermal analysis. The thermal and mechanical material properties are considered as temperature dependent functions, due to the high temperature variations during the welding. The numerical model is calculated by using a commercial software and evaluated with the experiments. The calculation results could make a comparative study in the view of distortion for the various size and shape of structure.

  • Magnesium alloys are becoming important material for light weight car body, due to their low specific density but high specific strength. However they have a poor weldability, caused high oxidization tendency and low vapor temperature. In this study, the laser welding performance of magnesium alloys was investigated for automobile application. The materials were rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains 3%Al and 1%Zn. To evaluate the weldability, we examined the appearance of welding bead. The mechanical property was measured for welded specimen by tensile test. And formability was checked with the Erichsen tester. For the results, the performance of weld in laser welding was enough for press forming such as car body. But it was recommended to use filler wire for reduce the under fill.

  • The butt and the lap welding by friction stir welding performs with $2mm^t$ 1050 aluminum alloy sheet. This paper shows behaviors of property such as vickers hardness, yielding and ultimate stresses, and macro structures for weld zone cross section of the butt and the lap jointed specimens. It is also carried out making comparison with maximum loads, stress-strain diagrams, and deformation after the guided bending test and fracture behaviors between the butt and the lap jointed specimens. It is found that the weldability of the butt jointed specimen is better than that of the lap jointed specimen.
