  • Welding conditions in process of spot welding must become optimum and need to guarantee stability and reliability of vehicle body considering dynamic load history. Because welding parameters in process of spot welding are various, it is difficult that the quality of spot weldment was included in the optimum levels. In this paper, we found the optimum welding conditions satisfying KS spot welding qualities using genetic algorithm and spot welding experiments of high tensile strength steel and galvanized steel. Those experiments were dissimilar weld and 2-lap spot welding. Genetic algorithm created random welding condition after that, selected optimum individuals by probability concept.

  • We designed a weld monitoring system with UV and IR sensors using a embedded DSP controller for implementing a distribution system; running stand alone and communication with outside by industrial standard protocols. Also this system provided a USB port in order to be acquiring data in PC. The user interface program in PC visualized the IR and W data in time, frequency and state space. A correlation of IR and UV signals showed closely related to weld quality. A rapid change of geometry can be found through a moving average filter. And the average value of IR signal at an interval represented a welding width and depth. Through these results, we proposed a monitoring algorithm for a integer type DSP.

  • The feasibility for improving the cooling rates and mechanical properties of wet welding process is experimentally investigated by using new developed underwater wet electrodes and H.T. steel plates. Main results of this experimental study can be summarized as follows; 1) By shielding around weld arc surrounding, the cooling rates resulting from wet welds with developed electrodes on TMCP steel plates can be lower than of non-shielded wet welds. 2)A high quality of mechanical properties of wet welds on TMCP steel plates can be obtained with shielded weld arc surrounding.

  • Over the last few years, there has been a growing interest in quantitative representation of heat transfer and fluid flow phenomena in weld pools in order to relate the processing conditions to the quality of the weldment produced and to use this information for the optimization and robotization of the welding process. Normally, a theoretical model offers a powerful alternative to estimate the important input parameters and to calculate the effects of varying any of parameters. To solve this problem, a transient 2D(two-dimensional) heat conduction and a transient 2D axisymmetric heat and fluid model were developed for determining weld bead geometry and temperature distribution for the GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding process. The equation was solved using a general thermofluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the SIMPLE algorithm. The simulation results showed that the calculated bead geometry from two developed models reasonably agree with the experiment result.

  • Neural networks are shown to be effective in being able to distinguish incomplete penetration-like weld defects by directly analyzing the plasma which is generated on each impingement of the laser on the materials. The performance is similar to that of existing methods based on extracted feature parameters. In each case around 93% of the defects in a database derived from 100 artificially produced defects of known types can be placed into one of two classes: incomplete penetration and bubbling. Especially we present simulator for weld defects classification and data analysis. The present method based on classification using plasma is faster, and the speed is sufficient to allow on-line classification during data collection.

  • Plastic materials are utilized to the most important material of automobile interior-parts due to special characteristics that it is light, good strength and do not transmute quality even if pass long time. This study presented a preliminary analysis of fill time, weld line, air trap etc. for the plastic injection molding process of automobile gearbox cover through simulation using Moldflow.

  • In torch weaving in arc welding on V groove, the heat input distribution on groove surface is a main factor determining the bead shape and the weld quality with and without the weld defects such as undercut, overlap, etc. In this study, we calculate the heat input varying with the welding current, arc voltage, welding speed and the touch weaving condition using numerical method. And we investigate the heat input distribution on groove surface while applying the various grooves having 2 dimensional heat sources.

  • The influence of surface preparation methods after plasma cutting on the quality of weld zone was investigated. For comparison, three types of welded specimens were prepared by machining (WM), plasma cutting with light regrinding (WPG) and without regrinding (WP), by using three kinds of materials, carbon steel (SM45C), stainless steel (STS304) and aluminum alloy (A6061-T6). Nondestructive examination, hardness test, microstructure examination, and fracture toughness test were performed. The results showed that there was no appreciable reduction in hardness or fracture toughness in WP specimens. But a little difference in heat affected zone size was observed.

  • Welding deformation reduces the accuracy of ship hull blocks and decreases productivity due to the need for correction work. Preparing an error-minimizing guide at the design stage will lead to higher quality as well as higher productivity. Therefore, developing a precise method to predict the weld deformation is an essential part of it. This paper proposes an efficient method for predicting the weld deformation of complicated structures based on the inherent strain theory combined with the finite element method. A simulation of a stiffened panel confirmed the applicability of this method to simple ship hull blocks.

  • Injection pressure, an important factor in the filling procedure, should be minimized to enhance injection molding quality. In addition, warping deformation and weld lines, which are representative failures, should be avoided to enhance injection molding quality. To improve injection molding quality, the design procedure for an automotive fog blank cover is divided into two stages. In the first stage, we optimally obtain injection molding process variables that minimize injection pressure and warping deformation by using design of experiments, approximation and optimization techniques equipped in PIAnO (Process Integration, Automation and Optimization), a commercial PIDO (Process Integration and Design Optimization) tool. Then, we determine the thickness of the automotive fog blank cover that enables us to avoid generating weld lines. The design results we obtain in this study are found far better than those of the initial design, which demonstrates the effectiveness of our design method.
